News & Notes XLV: Simply Having A Wonderful Canesmastime

Interesting data:

Wild to see Toronto and Washington thoroughly outplaying the XG metrics. You hear about the Caps but I didn't think the Leafs were in the same boat. The little I see from Leafs games is Auston Matthews getting a boatload of scoring chances and not cashing in as much as I've come to expect, which would have the opposite impact.

Adding Jank puts us right back where we were with Drury in terms of having three bottom six centers that are all maybe supposed to be fourth line centers depending on how good the 2C is. When of course we don’t have a 2C. If we’re going to make a big trade and overpay somewhere, thats where we should be doing that. I think that’s where I was most frustrated the day we got Rants and through what happened. If you have to trade Necas, do it for that. If we had held onto Jake and traded Necas for a 2C we’d be in fat city with the offense right now.
2C is very high on my offseason wishlist. Really it’s been on the wishlist since Trocheck left.

who is out, Svetch?

Robidas getting rewarded for his great year I suspect.

DC game next week just carry 5’8” and below on entire roster and dare Wilson to catch them.
It's a lose lose for Tom. If you win, wow, congrats, you smacked around a guy 6 inches shorter and 40 pounds lighter than you.

If you lose, you got smacked around by a featherwight. Congrats, dipshit.

Any Carolina Panthers fans here might or might not remember this, but when the Aints briefly had Rob Ryan as their DC there was some insane chatter about a revolutionary new defense of “hybrid” players that he was going to bring to the team — basically 11 strong safeties who could play the pass, the run, rush the passer, basically do it all. Well it seems like us and small right handed forwards seems to be the NHL version of that. Lol

Or the old run-and-shoot the Oilers ran, with zero TE and maybe an RB if absolutely necessary.

Those losses to Boston/Detroit could be a missed opportunity to take the division. If we had won both we’d be 7 pts back with a game in hand and a matchup vs the Caps. Would still be a bit of a long shot, but possible. Now we’re all but guaranteed M2.

Expecting a normal response to this

I said at the time you see fights end with dangerous take downs all the time. I just went to hockeyfights and randomly clicked through some recent fights. Half of them ended with a dude getting slammed down or straight up tackled. Chatfield's is rough because of the leg inclusion, but I still think that's more inexperience in fighting and probably being in a situation he really didn't want to be in. Now, maybe he was trying to be dirty on purpose. I won't discount that completely. But that would run pretty counter to what we've seen out of him in his time here at the very least.

Good points.

My take, ended up a "dirty play" but was not his intent and more importantly, he is one of the least dirty defensemen in the NHL.

You just don't see any rough physical play from him. He uses his speed as his advantage, checks cleanly, etc.
