News & Notes XLV: Simply Having A Wonderful Canesmastime

If my math is correct, with a Columbus regulation loss tonight against Nashville, we clinch a playoff spot tonight. I'm appreciative of the fact that we no longer have to sweat whether we're even getting in now.
So we also could have clinched with a Habs loss. We were 8.4 seconds away before MTL tied it at two and wasted no time in OT to sweep the defending Stanley Cup Chamipons.

Fine, I guess we’ll just do it ourselves.

That was a borderline heroic performance by Suzuki to put his team up in the last wildcard spot like that. The kid is building a rep of being clutch on top of skilled - even if the last second goal was a bit fortunate. I don’t actually care if our clinch got put off for a night for a really amazing game/effort like that. Not unlike Ghost’s play of the season keeping Detroit in it when it mattered most.

The Habs may be annoying af but the league is better when they’re a good team, and it’s a lot of fun to watch a team turn the corner from youngsters to playoff team.

On the flip side if Cbus makes it after the tragedy it’s also an amazing feel good performance that tugs the heart strings. You can’t root against them. They should’ve been fighting to be the worst team in the league and here they are knocking at the door. That’s all heart. Good for them.

If it wasn't for Spencer Carbery, I don't see how Dean Evason wouldn't be a shoo in for coach of the year. With the tragedy they faced, being able to keep their head on straight for this long is truly remarkable. I can't root against Columbus.

Growing up, Montreal was an insufferable fan base. lol, I wish Bergevin was back in charge

Thus, they can stay down in perpetuity & I'll take Columbus over Montreal any day....

Start the Jarvy for Selke campaign?

For sure. Jarvis is our second best defensive forward next to Staal, and this is on a team which hoards defensive forwards. Jarvis is just so, so good. We got insanely lucky for landing Jarvis 13th overall for a team that should be in the mid 20s. We got lucky Jarvis fell as he should have been drafted at 8th or so. We got lucky most of all that our guy took Brind'Amour's coaching to heart. Brindy is always cautious with rookies but I think he liked Jarvis from day 1 even more than Svechnikov because of Jarvis's commitment and work ethic is superb. I think Slavin is our best player but I'd say Jarvis is our most valuable asset in the organization.

That said, I think Jordan Staal should have won a couple more Selkes and will be my vote in perpetuity, even over Barkov. I might be biased though. :sarcasm:

I've been saying forever Jarvis could be our 2C easy if he can win FO's just a little more. But that means pulling him from Aho which, man IDK about that. They've really worked it out.

I still say Stankoven for 2C. But then you have Staal and Jankowski who is on fire. I mean shit. If Jankowski somehow got his cheat code unlocked and sustains this thru next year maybe he can be 2C? Its too late to change the mix and see what works or take that risk but damn.

I think Jank is the eventual Staal replacement.
Yea I wouldn't expect Janky to be more than a 3rd line guy at best. We've seen Nookie go on Wayne Gretzky streaks but he's a bottom 6 guy, even Roslo who started the season super hot is a middle-six-ish guy but ideally probably not a 2nd liner if you can help it (like KK)

Adding Jank puts us right back where we were with Drury in terms of having three bottom six centers that are all maybe supposed to be fourth line centers depending on how good the 2C is. When of course we don’t have a 2C. If we’re going to make a big trade and overpay somewhere, thats where we should be doing that. I think that’s where I was most frustrated the day we got Rants and through what happened. If you have to trade Necas, do it for that. If we had held onto Jake and traded Necas for a 2C we’d be in fat city with the offense right now.
