News & Notes XLV: Simply Having A Wonderful Canesmastime

"If he's seeing 35, he just seems so much more in the zone to me."

If that's the rub he is on the wrong NHL team.
That's why the borg is going to trade him and a middling pick for mrazek this offseason. He'll see volume in chicago, we'll have our wildman 1b to split starts with calm guy re-signed 1a freddie.

(Note - this may not happen.)

If you're really stanky people tend to give you all the room you need and we should be able to make our way to the net.

Have the boys tried not showering during the POs? It would be like taking the not shaving thing to the next level and add another measurable dimension to the team.

Hide the toothpaste and the tp too.

Possible. I've assumed it's mental focus. I think the mental part of his game has grown, but I've still seen this year when he makes a mistake to make another mistake on the next shift. What also evidences this in my eyes is how much better he plays when he's seeing constant action. He gives up the most stinkers when the other team has 15 shots. If he's seeing 35, he just seems so much more in the zone to me.
Honestly, it really sounds and feels like ADHD. Get the man some industrial grade stimulants.

I say it all the damn time. When he's in a rhythm he's on his game. If he's not seeing a lot of action he gets easily fooled. Honestly it's one of the things about Rod that drives me up a wall. I don't want Kooch to be peppered with 35-40 shots a night like Florida did to Luongo in the early 00s but I don't want him lulled to sleep either.

So who is Detroit getting when they flip Marcel back to Chicago?

The Canes found Jackson Blake in the 4th round of an allegedly-weak 2021 draft because of all of the trade-downs in said draft. There's almost certainly going to be more of these sorts of finds as the years go on.
I agree with this. Grudinin, Poirier, Nystrom, Forsmark, Krutov, Kol. Robidas, etc are all other ones we should be excited about. All 4th round or later and I bet we get another gem or 2 out of them.

Then they need to get him a shrink or something. Hard to imagine they can ask the guys to play differently every other game because of the goalie behind them.

Agreed plus that excuse didn't't hold water the other night. Islanders were very active early on and PK had a lot of activity and should have been engaged. He is in one of his usual slumps.

Remember the Ward/Peters years when they would play completely different levels of defense based on who was in net?

Yeah, that sucked.

And here's the thing: this system is built for an average goalie. Limit shots, limit shots, limit shots. Don't rely on a great tendie to bail you out. Remember: this team beat the Leafs with a Junior B goaltender, and won the Jennings with Andersen and Raanta. Since late picks are pretty close to useless anyway, spend them on goalies that are hard to find any other way.

If the Canes ever do manage to hit big with one of these picks, it's found money.
....and Freddie Andersen was originally a Carolina Hurricanes 7th round pick.

If my math is correct, with a Columbus regulation loss tonight against Nashville, we clinch a playoff spot tonight. I'm appreciative of the fact that we no longer have to sweat whether we're even getting in now.

Well, it's 7-3 CBS after two right now. But I wouldn't bet against an 8-7 final score.
