I was just in Myrtle Beach for Thanksgiving, and there were a lot of New York plates around. It's not the natives driving that, it's the snowbirds, and the snowbirds are much more likely to follow hockey.

Northern WV is explicitly Pens country if you follow hockey, and the rest of the state is a mix of Caps, Pens, and even Canes and Jackets fans with the occasional fan of whoever's hot (usually Wings or Devils when I was there). The only Rangers fans I ever saw there were students that wanted to get TF out of New York for college or that couldn't get into one of the better NYC area schools so they went to WVU or Marshall. And those were usually VASTLY out-numbered by Pens, Flyers, and Caps fan students from PA, MD, and VA.

Here on the outskirts of Asheville I see support for three teams. Carolina Panthers, App State, and Clemson. Makes sense because all three are about equidistance from Asheville.

Once again, let's put the facts out there.

From start of the season through the Columbus game here are some key metrics:

5v5:
CF%: KK was ranked 13 out of 13 Canes forwards
xGF%: KK was ranked 11th out of 13 Canes forwards.
GA/60: KK was ranked 10th out of 13 Canes forwards.
GF%: KK was ranked 7th out of 13 Canes forwards (due to Necas high SH%)
HDCA: KK was ranked 11th out of 13 Canes forward.
HDCF%: KK was ranked 12th out of 13 forwards.
OISH%: KK was ranked 1st (due to Necas high SH%)
Offensive zone starts%: KK was ranked 2nd most (Necas and Robinson 1 and 3)
Defensive Zone starts / 60: KK was ranked 12th (Necas and Robinson 11th, 13th)

Also, he had the worst FO% at 49.7% of any center during this time.

His line faced the weakest competition with favorable ozone starts and other than Necas's high SH%, didn't have good metrics.

Again, I don't think Drury is any better so I have no problem putting KK back there, but he was riding the coat-tails of Necas's high SH%.

I think it just goes to show Kooch is at both his best and his worst when he turns off his brain. On high danger chances when you just have to go based on instinct and reflexes, he's best in the league. When its a routine shot, he is a space cadet.

Maybe give him a little aderall to keep his mind focused!

I fail to believe that the rags are the most popular team in SC. Or WV. I grew up on the border of WV and VA and there isnt a single f***ing thing people in WV find redeeming about NY, and I never saw a single piece of rangers gear the there to this day when I go home (wife is from WV).

The near same could be said about SC. This map is pretty much horse shit lol.

Perhaps the area has changed. Similar data-centric map shows a strong Yankees following along the VA/WV border.

Also a couple of counties going Knicks-Orange in this NBA map.

And so not surprisingly, a couple of Jets/Giants counties as well

Absent a better explanation, I would hypothesize that this doesn’t necessarily reflect NYC teams having the predominant fanbase in the area, but being perhaps the largest fanbase in a transitional zone where for example the Pens/Jackets/Caps might be splitting a county into small fragments.

I mean isn't it about how many times the team was searched online? Could be as simple as the Rags being a dumpster fire this year and enough people in SC googling to see why to make it swing in that direction

And at that point, they were our top competition for top spot in the division/conference, so again, enough Canes fans could have been googling them (when the Canes was already bookmarked) that it tipped the scales.

These kind of surveys are always crap. The data points are... suspect at best

Of the 37 goalies who played 12 games or more (I used TOI of 650 minutes), Kochetkov ranks 36th out of 37th in Low Danger SV%. Only Georgiev is worse. In MDSV%, he ranks 29th out of 37.

The way Tripp was talking about him against SanJose leads me to believe they are actively trying to trade for more than a stop gap back up. Just my opinion.

Damn that’s bad and validates the “eye” test. Goalies are voodoo but Pyotr has disappointed so far this year.

Everytime there's a main board thread about 3v3/the shootout, there are posters who cry foul about how it's a gimmick, it's embarrassing. Implying the first 60 minutes are a serious game. It always reminds me of the ending of Slapshot



Anyway the core problem is a vocal chunk of people are dissatisfied with how regulation games end, and whatever you think about 3v3/shootout/ties bringing the latter back doesn't actually solve this issue.

It’s fine as is. 3v3 is great. There was an awhile where it got boring but I generally find teams break each other down for great chances no matter what. It’s becoming more rare imo to see a full 3v3 that’s actually boring and nothing happens. Even if they went 3 minutes of possession when it falls apart it’s a skill sprint back and forth that makes up for it. I could see extending this period to avoid the shootout but that’s it. I don’t mind the shootout either.

I think teams are realizing that its much easier to win 3v3 than it is a shootout where one bump on the ice that causes the puck to hop a stick could lose you a game, so everyone goes into the extra session with intent to win.

And anytime I hear anyone call anything a gimmick in the NHL I immediately think of Don Cherry getting redfaced over the Canes clapping at the end of a game and it makes me smile.
