Aho and Svech at a PPG and looking pretty meh so far so bode well for the season I'd say.
i swear there have been multiple times over the last two or three seasons where this conversation will happen here:

postyposterface: Man, Aho has been pretty invisible lately. It's getting concerning.

replyiereplyerface: I mean, he's got 8 points in the last six games...

not calling out what you're saying - just noting that aho often seems to rack up his points quietly.

True, he does fly under the radar a bit in that way. Then he hits that stretch where he goes out and says "F**K you Jobu, I do it myself"

Over on the Roslovic thread, I was joking w/ @Boom Boom Apathy about Roslovic, Ponikarovsky, and the pick that got us Slavin. I had teased that we might even get a 3rd round pick....which got me thinking about the success of 3rd rounders vs. 4th rounders (for this organization). Of this group (last 11 drafts), 5 draftees have played NHL games.

3rd Round Picks (Since 2014 draft inclusive)

2024
Noel Fransen
2023
Jayden Perron
2022
Alexander Perevalov
2021
Patrik Hamrla
Aidan Hreschuk
2020
Alexander Nikishin
2019
Patrik Puistola
Anttoni Honka
Domenick Fensore
2018
-no 3rd round pick
2017
Morgan Geekie (265)
Stelio Mattheos
2016
Matt Filipe
Hudson Elynuik
2015
-no 3rd round pick
2014
Warren Foegele (447)

4th Round Picks (same time period)

2024
Alexander Siryatsky
2023
Alexander Rykov
Stanislov Yarovoi
2022
Simon Forsmark
Cruz Lucius
2021
Jackson Blake (10)
2020
Zion Nybeck
2019
Cade Webber
Tuukka Tieksola
2018
Luke Henman
Lenni Killinen
2017
Eetu Makiniemi
2016
Max Zimmer
2015
Callum Booth
Nicolas Roy (309)
2014
Josh Wesley
Lucas Wallmark (187)

Other notable 3rd/4th round picks: Brett Pesce, Trevor Carrick, Jaccob Slavin, Keegan Lowe, Gregory Hofmann, Danny Biega, Justin Shugg, Michal Jordan, Casey Borer, Brett Carson, Rob Zepp, Niclas Wallin, Brad Fast, Erik Cole, Josef Vasicek, Tommy Westlund, Francis Lessard, Shane Willis

Many of these guys played less than 10 games, but as you can see, there were some pretty notable Hurricanes taken in these two rounds.

EDIT: Thanks for pointing out my brain fart @Boom Boom Apathy

Couple of thoughts looking at this.

2016 in general was a bust of a draft. I think Bean is still in the league (Tampa?) but McAvoy went after him and everyone else is either out of the league or never made it. Probably not that big of a deal since the year before was the generational draft but still disappointing overall.

Josh Wesley was a waste of a pick. 4th round or not, IIRC at best he was going to be a 6th round pick but likely undrafted. Hell Wallmark in the same round carved out a decent role here for 3 seasons.

2019 in general has not panned out well for a lot of teams beyond the first round. Blame it on Covid interrupting development I suppose, seems like they got the raw end of the steak here compared to '18 and '20.

Stankhoven is a rookie this year? How? I thought he had played way more but - Stankhoven is pretty solid.

Blake isnt winning a calder vs the likes of Stank or Hutson, but then again neither did Jarvis. If we already have the next Jarvy esque prospect in him, Im all in.
Same way Kochetkov finished 4th in Calder Trophy voting last year. Only 24 games for Stankhoven; the 19 games in the playoffs don’t count.

Thanks for the point out....brain fart. Fixed it now. My point is, while we've done okay in the later rounds, we still basically perform at or slightly above historic averages....so far.
Since Dundon/Tulsky took over, I think it's actually below historic averages, at least until some of these guys actually make it. In fairness, it sometimes takes lower picks longer to make it so that's part of it.

Since Dundon / Tulsky took over, the only player they drafted beyond round 2 that has become a full time NHLr is Jackson Blake, and he has 11 games to his resume.

Granted, I think it's fair to point out that on a really good team, with cup aspirations every year, that had a young roster at the start if the run in 18-19, it is harder for a young player to crack the roster.

Necas on a heater; almost 29% shooting percentage.

Old-time hockey view re +/- would say that Svetch, Aho, Jarvis, Burns minus stats leave room for improvement.
