They currently have $34.1 million committed to six players for 2014-15, $29.1 million for five assuming they buy out Fleury at some point. I don't think they'll have the issues other people think. This year might be tighter for them if anything, they're only like $7 million under the cap with three forward and one D spot to fill.
If Letang becomes a FA then the Devils need to make him their #1 target.

Does Letang really want $8M/year? If so, he's going to end up in the KHL, I expect, nobody else is going to give him that kind of payday.Hell no, he wants 8mil per year, not happening. Or the more realistic answer Lou probably wouldn't even make him an offer if he hit UFA.

That's just nuts.Bob McKenzie also just tweeted, that Letang will AT LEAST be looking for 7 mil per year double his current salary.
That's just nuts.
I'll take Letang at $5m
But he's not Suter, Weber, or Doughty. Not a chance Letang signs for 5mil when Suter,Weber,& Doughty make north of 7mil per year.
He's pretty close to Doughty nit so much the other two.
Foote for 96' Avalanche (or maybe Sandis Ozolinsh), Zubov or Hatcher for 99' Stars. You should ever pay a strictly offensive minded D-man 7+ mil.
Just look at the best defenseman on the Stanley Cup winning teams since 95:
Chara, Keith, Doughty, Orpik, Lidstrom x4, Niedermayer, Frank Kaberle, Boyle, Stevens x3, Bourque
I didn't include the Stars or the '96 Avs because I don't know who their best D-men was. Not familiar with those teams. Maybe Adam Foote?
Anyway, look at all of those names and their playstyles. Every one of them is a two-way, better on the defensive end except Orpik who is shutdown D, Niedermayer and Bourque who were two-way offensive, and Boyle who is an offensive minded D-man.
Point being, it's very rare a Stanley Cup winning team has a strictly offensive minded D-man as their best blueliner. Too much money committed to a guy who focuses on the wrong zone.
uhhhh what
He's pretty close to Doughty not so much the other two.
They said they won't buy Fleury out.
When you factor in Letang and Kunitz being due a combined ~6 million dollar raise on top of their 7.2m current cap hits, you're left with around 17-20 million dollars to sign 9 forwards, 5 D-men, and a goalie. Someone has to go unless they plan on using thift shop defensemen year in and year out.
