Would you do any of those deals if you were the Rangers?

That's a rhetorical question. We both know the answer.
Ummmm if your in win mode now and looking for a top 6 guy like the nyr are and your looking to move a kakko I dont know what your expecting

no ones trading a zegras or a top end top 6 guy for kakko who's a 3rd liner. You tell me what you expect for kakko and not necessarily from the redwings ... what player do you expect to land when the nyr announced they traded kakko

Wouldn’t it make the most sense for the rangers to try to trade Troubla somewhere close so he wouldn’t have to relocate? I mean the options are NYI and NJD but Lou might bite on him. He’s a Lou type of player.

I expect the Rangers to move a move expensive player so they can keep Kakko.

Are the Rangers thinking re-tool or closer to a rebuild?
It's hard to say right now.

They need to get rid of the absolute garbage (Zibanejad, Trouba, Lindgren) and then kind of see where they're at.

I don't think it's as black and white as "the team is old and bad, time to reset." I mean, the team kind of is old and bad, but I'm interested to see what the team looks like without the worst offenders.

Which of the players that you offered do you believe are top 6?

Veleno, with his 2 points in 22 games? Tarasenko with 11 points in 24 games? If we thought Tarasenko was the answer, we would have kept him around 2 years ago. Kakko has as many points as both of them combined. So please, tell me how any of those deals help us.

You offered 3 different piles of shit and are somehow now surprised when I turn my nose up at the smell. Don't pretend you know what the Rangers need. It just makes you look foolish.

Fire Sale = damaged goods for dirt cheap.
Why would any other team pay for Rangers damaged goods unless picks/prospects were attached?

Umm... you guys got Doug Weight and Todd Marchant. I still hate those trades.
Really? Lowe for roman frigging Oksuita?
Messier for Debrusk. Add on Graves, MacT, Tikkanen, Anderson.

And you hate them because it cost you Marchant :/

Weight turned out good so will give you that.

All of the pieces the Rangers are reportedly looking to move will have value.

They probably shouldn't, but this league still values grit and intangibles.

I mean there are a couple of different categories here

The guys that you are going to need to attach picks to move are the ones that are going to be the hardest to move because of NMCs and they have term:
- ZIbanejad and Trouba

We have bad players that they are going to need to take a bath on, but because they are rentals, I wouldn't attach anything to
- Smith and Lindgren

Then you have the "one mans trash, another man's treasure" category which are guys that are going to be movable for rightful/wrongful reasons. Namely the salary cap implications/recouping assets that you would need to attach to move Zibanejad or Trouba
- Kreider (need to move salary out and less restrictive NTC), Trocheck (need to move salary out and probably forced to keep ZIbanejad), Miller (can't afford RFA raise/change of scenery)

And finally you have the three nuclear options
- Trading Igor (because signing him to this team would be nuts)
- Trading Fox (before his NMC sets in and team is rebuilding anyway)
- Trading Panarin (since they probably aren't going to be re-signing him Summer 2026)

I don't think any form of re-tool makes any sense for this team at all. I don't think Drury should be the one holding the keys to this either.

The big issue here is the two albatross contracts on the two most immovable guys on the team. Those are the ones that don't have value; but even Trouba I wouldn't go crazy attaching assets to move because he is expiring next season, and its not like the Rangers have another other Dmen they can replace him internally with. That being said, based on what happens/doesn't happen with those two is going to have to drive anything else. Zibanejad has completely cratered and he is the biggest problem right now; and he has a full NMC so....yeah

Can we just take all the other threads and move it here. I don't think we need a new thread for every player..

What are they looking to do? The answer is probably somewhere in the middle, and at the very least shake things by getting players out of their comfort level, realizing this isn't a bromance party where you hang with your BFF until retirement. You can be a virtual god father or uncle. Your children can grow up being friends that see each other during holidays. Does this sound harsh? It might, but that's life. You can't stay together forever and if that puts extra pressure on you, then you should leave now.

Defensemen who can win a foot race to the puck, especially when they have 5+ strides would be nice, and probably ease the the part where they have to actually make a first pass.

Players who don't float would also be nice.

  • Todd Marchant was like the perfect 3rd line center for a really long time. Top 5 fastest skaters in the league at the time. Stellar on the PK. Great on faceoffs. He was essentially a faster, younger MacTavish but he also came with a helmet.
  • We got Anderson from Toronto. You don't get to count that one. And I hated trading Gartner too. He got booted by Mike Keenan and Messier.
  • Oksuita was a throw in for Kevin Lowe. I don't understand how we got him for essentially a 3rd. Yall sold low on Lowe but I can give you that one.
  • Graves got offer sheeted and yall walked so that's on you.
  • No clue about Beuke for Shaw. That was like a very nothing burger trade back then. It's only in hindsight we can have a harsher judgement of that trade.
  • Yeah, you guys go the raw end of the Messier deal but I think it's a situation where he's the best player in the trade so you will lose that exchange 10 out of 10. HOF Bernie Nichols was no slouch. And back then Debrusk and Rice were essentially our top two prospects. Rob Zamuner was the other top prospect who we inexplicably let walk to Tampa. I don't have a link and I might be getting this totally wrong but I *think* I remember reading that EDM could have traded Mess earlier when he was trying to renegotiate his contract in 1990. Yall might have had a shot at Tomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato back then. Also mad about that trade LOL.

Most of these fleece jobs and EDM walking away were due to Sather and under the table deals.
Lowe negotiated and signed with the Rangers before EDM even knew what they could be getting in return.
Messier wanted him and Rangers had the money that small market Edm didn't.

Also, Marchant was a nothing speedster.
Less MacT and more of modern day Athanasiou who could PK or a Ryan MacLeod. All speed with not much finish.

What would the Rangers want as a fair offer for Kakko?
2025 LA 2nd + 2025 UT 2nd + Sheary to make $$ work?

No. The Rangers want to move move expensive players to keep Kakko. Maybe it comes to it later, but other guys will be moved first

Sure he couldn't finish ... but he was still a really excellent role player. Literally every team in the league would have loved to have him on their 3rd line and on their PK unit. I bet you there were playoff teams calling about him every TDL. And he ended up playing the most games of anyone from his draft class. Not bad for a "nothing."

Sure, the same can be said for Ryan McLeod.. you just don't put them on the same sentence as hall of fame players.
Marchant, Cogliano, Buchberger carved out nice careers but were not stars.
Marchant missing breakaway chances was one of the longest running jokes in Edmonton
