OT: New Year, Same Old Me

And the last 22 years of epic drought outstrip any agencies ability to manage the enormous fuel load from stressed trees that are now dead.
I forgot the update schedule last night and thought Vancouver had finally moved one of Miller or Pettersson.
I would expect template and page updates. Some things have been thumped by the change.

So, Nate had to learn the hard way that his sick '84 Porsche 944 was not a great idea for a college kid attending college in Central NY.
But, it sounds like he's getting bailed out by his mom's BF. He has a Honda CRV that has been his winter vehicle. He just wants to get rid of it and Nate is going to buy it for like $300. Nate thinks it just needs a new alternator to solve the issue it is dealing with.
If he gets a reliable winter vehicle that can stay on the roads around Morrisville and make it back and forth to and from home without breaking down on I-90, we will be really happy.
And then he plans to sell the Porsche, buy a Honda Civic that is similar to the one he has that is parked in his grandparents' back yard and part swap for a cool summer vehicle.
Having that Honda summer/winter combo is way better than the current situation...

One problem with that is his goal is to get a manual Civic to have one manual vehicle and one automatic.Swap the CRV drivetrain into the Civic
His Civic and the CRV are both automatics and his Porsche is a manual.

I just saw the LAFD chief give her interview. Some might say she was being frank to save her job. But based on the request history, she's been asking for funding for years. Maybe one of the most candid interviews I've ever watched. She stood up for her department and fire fighters. Good for her.

They had a quarter of their budget cut (as did a couple of other departments) and all of it got funneled over to LA PD. They’re working with what they’ve got. I’m not saying the $28 million that they shifted away from fire would’ve made any of this any easier. Wind gusts up to 100 mph, and 22 years of drought, it’s a systemic issue way beyond just being able to contain.
Also, it’s pretty impressive how many wildland firefighters have come from Canada and Mexico to assist. I’ve heard that the Australians and the South Africans may be deploying some of their wildland people as well. LAFD has done the best that they can. I have no doubt about that.

When my team responded to Hurricane Helene, one of the huge priorities was to get hotels working. The hotel we stayed at just opened and was running off a generator brought in from out of state. The entire hotel was my team, and linesman from everywhere in North America. Some came as far away as Alberta and BC in Canada. More linesman than I've ever seen.
Natural disasters like this bring in a lot of emergency responders. Very similar to military personnel. They get paid, for sure, but this who they are.
I'm not current on what happened with LA and their budget, but part of my job is to work for my installation's version of a city manager. I learned real quick that you never short police, firefighters, EMS, and public works (water, electric, etc). Those go into the "must fund" bucket.
As you mentioned, even if the LAFD was funded fully, I don't think they could've stopped the fires. But it's just never good for the community to under fund firefighters.

I had a great time with the wifey. We got pretty stoned, and watched Allen tear it up. It was nice singing Mr. Brightside with her by my side again.

It sounds like my ex-MIL is really sick and my kids are close to losing their first grandparent.

Oof. Very sorry to hear that. I hope it's as peaceful as it can be.
My wife's final grandparent had a heart attack this past week and if he recovers enough to get out of the hospital, he's going directly to hospice care. All mine are long gone. The last one was maybe 8 years ago?
On the work front, another meeting with my boss today. He wanted me to apply for my old title. I flat out told him I will not. I told him I don't feel like I even had a chance to get started with the job I am in because of the circumstances of my team quitting, being downsized, having to train replacements, etc.
I asked if the replacement from me is expected to be all 7 job titles he's asked me to do (I listed them) and he dodged that, but later basically said no, their focus is going to be different and would *only* cover probably 4 of those (my words). I told him my wife is pissed and that I'm trying to be more level headed but it's incredibly difficult with the situation. He's going to look into a different title for me, with ~11k paycut.
The meeting ended with him saying "I know this is my fault and I totally take the blame. I hope I haven't burned any bridges between you and the district because I really want you to stay."
So if I have to take a paycut, the least he can do is make it a different title, then I can cite reorganization as why I'm leaving, and it's done with. Gotta get out.

Tell him you're willing to take a 2k paycut if he takes a 9k paycut.
