NEW: Walman? Zetterlund?!? Our Sharks' Trade Deadline Reaction

Confirmed from the man himself, Chernyshov is going to be our Russian version of Mark Stone. Sounds good to me!

Yes like with all prospect comps, this one is guaranteed to happen.
You qualified yourself well.

I wish Colby could have talked about Hagens a bit since he covers the college scene and he's the only college prospect we might potentially draft. But excellent guest.

How did you manage to get Sheng to muster the strength to record after we got rid of his favorite player?
Had to remind him that he has to play the right way and can't let this get to him or let it affect his play. Pucks in deep. Crash the net. Board battle 50/50 pucks.

Did the trick right away

I have come around a little on the trade after watching some Ostapchuk but I do still think it's a bit of a hopium trade.

I find Sheng's obsession with Granlund endearing. Makes him feel like a fan like us, who is prone to get irrationally locked in on a favorite player.

That said, I feel like one thing you could have asked him about when he was going on about how Grier would have gotten more from Dallas had he waited until deadline day is how he thinks a deal would have gotten done with all the Rantanen work they were doing on deadline day. IMO, had Grier waited, we might not have been able to move Grandlund at all. Though I guess Sheng would probably be just fine with that. 🙃

Anyway, food for thought. I liked the whole discussion on Ostapchuk. Made me understand the trade a lot more, even if it still stings emotionally.

Out of curiousity, with the way Blackwood has been playing, what would the trade market have been for him if they'd have waited until closer to the deadline. Would the sharks have been able to swing a deal with Edmonton where it was Blackwood/Walman for a first, a third and O'Reilly or Savoie?

Maybe, but the risk was also that Blackwood would get hurt or turn into a pumpkin.

I think Grier tends to value making a deal to get what he will accept above trying to time the value of his asset to maximize return, with the risk that you get less or nothing.

I think the trade made sense at the time for those concerns--which I think were quite a bit elevated with him playing behind a bad team--and because the goalie market (starting goalies, in particular) tends to be pretty limited.

You need demand to increase the competitive offers, but how much demand could there have been? Did any other team trade for a #1 this year? I can't recall any others right now (Knight not included since that's not really the same).

So yeah, no regrets at all on that one. Granlund + Ceci, maybe some more value could've been had, but the same with the risk of waiting. Just get that added first as an asset and be happy, I suppose.

I don't think there were any other real goaltenders on the market. Especially not ones still in or entering their primes.

John Gibson was the main one, and he had a different kind of appeal than Blackwood, but also different question marks. If the Sharks had waited and Gibson had stayed healthy he very well could've been the guy a team like Colorado grabbed instead.
