GDT: New Jersey Devils vs. New York Islanders

I don’t understand how we can be so inept at scoring 5v5 when we’ve been rebuilding for so long.

Probably has something to do with Fitz drafting Mercer and no other regular forwards since taking over.

Has nothing to do with the rebuild. We WERE a great 5v5 offense. Then Fitz decided that offensive skill doesn’t matter. 21-22 we were a good 12th in 5v5 G/60, 22-23 5th, last year 8th. This year 25th. It shouldn’t have been hard to maintain at least a top 10 group for the foreseeable future after 22-23 but by god did Fitz ever do his damndest to ruin things

Hoping for a 180 from him this summer so he can undo his mistakes. The Glass and Sprong moves gives me a tiny bit of hope that he realizes that we need some more spark up and down the lineup.

I don't really care much about losing this, but the more we see of this the more stronger I am in my convictions that this team needs help in the offseason.

Mostly scoring help. It's not about replacing Lazar and Bastian with other 4th liners. This year has to be the end of Palat with Jack and Bratt.

I realize that if he could only pace for 30 points playing with them, he might be a 20 point player in the bottom 6.

Would be gratefully in debt to whoever would take him.

He is, I like him a lot

I just would like Dougie back. He does have his moments of being caught flat footed but he has been good on the boards in his own zone this season

Yeah yeah I get small rookie Dman playing in playoffs will spook some people but I really don’t see the justification to keep him out. Go 11/7 when Dougie’s back. Casey is clearly more important than Nate

We made the playoffs, so he gets another year.

He absolutely needs to make improvements in the offseason. Next season needs to be an improvement from this year. We should be aiming for 100 points and at least some damage in the playoffs.

Team has been painfully average offensively this year, and I believe today is only the second time that we were shutout since Jack has been out, and we've been shutout 9 times total. I know we got shutout in his final game, which if that's a blowout loss he's probably not on the ice in the last minute trying to manufacture a goal. But I'm not gonna try to rewrite history like that. It is is what it is.

But this has been a recurring problem all year, when Jack didn't miss any of the first 60 or so games, Nico only missed 5 and Bratt 0.

Just the kind of trait you want in your GM.

LOL

He was always an overreaction to Gaudreau going to CBJ, it was evident in 2022 and it's beyond evident now. He should've been a third liner in day 1 in NJ

Slight disagree.

I would have been fine with trying him out in top 6 upon arrival. I think we could have expected a couple of top 6 seasons out of him.

I agree the contract was always bad, but I think even the people who hated it the most couldn't have imagined it was going to result in exactly zero 40 point seasons.

He may have been able to hit 40 in his first year if he didn't miss 33 games, but was still pacing for slightly under it.

He definitely was the Johnny Gaudreau consolation prize.

Next season Fitz has quite the work to do. Most of the bottom 6 should be entirely different players & most of them are free agents. I'm also adding in a top 6 winger or in a ideal world a top 6 center/winger hybrid. Palat and even Noeson should be out the top 6. Fitz also needs to figure out if he intends to keep Mercer a center or if he is going back to winger next year. If he's back to winger then we also need a 3rd line center. Don't forget if Fitz plans on trading for a top 6 player there's a possibility Mercer is included. If we make 0 trades & walk into FA as we are this is how we're looking at the moment for next year.

Honestly would like to see one of Palat or Haula out. I know two is too much to ask for.

Haula on the 4th line is fine if he's here though. I think I'd rather move on from Palat.

anyone have the player relative performance chart for today? Am I nuts or was Nemec not too bad? I thought he was playing faster than normal (not skating or somehting...just reacting faster) which would be great!

I saw this and thought, "yeah, I didn't see anything super negative from nemec today" and then I checked natural stat trick and was surprised to see he's basically - in everything along with dillon compared to everyone else for this one. Wouldn't have expected that from what I watched

What timing lol.

Yeah, he and Dillon are awful which caught me off guard.

Relative percentages:

-28.64 corsi, -52.78 shots, -30.65 xgf, -7.18 scoring chances, -39.39 high danger

Was a zero, preseason effort
That in itself is kind of concerning while getting ready for the playoffs, no? :dunno:

Again, I understand the idea of not going full throttle with a spot clinched, but at the same time wouldn’t the team want to go into playoffs playing solid hockey and being confident? They say “practice how you wanna play”, I sort of see it in that way also for these final games.

I’m really split on the subject.

He’s made the team worse since 2022-2023 and will only do so again.

Hes an atrocious gm that should be shown the door. Hes had 5 years. One great season and he made the team slower and less skilled.
He doesn’t draft well, he hands out horrible contracts with no move and no trade clauses causing cap issues. He takes too long to make in season trades.

They didn’t earn this playoff spot this year. They clinched on other teams eliminating themselves with, like we did last year when chasing the caps in the same exact spot we are in now. And since “clinching” we’ve lost 3 games in a row out scored 13-4 against teams that have a combined 804 goals against.

Pretty unprofessional to not give any effort at home, regardless of the situation, IMO. If you’re worried about injuries, then sit your most important players. People still pay hard earned money and use up their personal time to watch the team play. I also don’t see how it’s a good thing to half ass your game when you’re trying to prepare for the playoffs and you’re a heavy underdog.

This basically sums up my view of today. Thank you.
