Not all of these guys will be moved but 1 or 2 probably will at the deadline. Possibly 3 considering Luke Hughes will more than likely be joining the team soon (maybe by the end of the season).

There’s also the possibility that none of them are traded if the Devils are in the playoff race.

So how much are these guys potentially worth now or at the deadline?

Damon Severson - 28 y/o RHD
Final year of UFA contract 4,166,666

Ryan Graves - 27 y/o LHD
Final year of UFA contract 3,166,667

Kevin Bahl - 22 y/o LHD
Final year of RFA contract 795,000

The reasons the Devils trade Severson is because we have Hamilton and Marino at RHD tied up to long term contracts with Nemec, Walsh, and Casey in the system.

The reason they trade Graves is because there’s a log jam at LHD which will only get even tighter when Luke Hughes joins.

The reason they trade Bahl is because of the same log jam at LHD. This one is tricky because he probably doesn’t get traded if Graves goes. But they might want to keep Graves if they’re in playoff contention and Bahl has been having trouble getting ice time. But he’s young and big at 6’6. Thing is what do you do with him now? Send him back to Utica? Wait for an inevitable injury to get him in?

management will make it work if severson continues to play at this level. I also think its not too far fetched that he'll take a hometown discount in line with nico and jack to keep the core together. yopu dont just throw that play and loyalty away
While I certainly don't disagree and would love to have him back, I don't see him taking a discount we can fit.

Devils fans (and everyone else) may want to start rethinking the idea of moving guys and start thinking about what they could use in a playoff push.
I'm okay with keeping him I guess for a playoff run. if we could get Severson for two more years I wouldn't hate it but I think Sev's is looking for a long term payday.

Really dont think moving them will be an issue if they continue to play the way they have

Losing out on a 1st or two and possibly more for an appearance is ridiculously overpaying
A two is a big nothing burger, especially from contenders. The appearance is well worth that. I'd listen if people were offering firsts and maybe try to have my cake and eat it too

I meant a 1st or two (as in two 1sts) which idk maybe is what Graves and Severson are worth, or even just Severson a 1st+

If the Devils are somehow someway comfortably in a playoff spot by the deadline, they have to move Severson and bring up Nemec. Id be beyond irate if we kept him for a playoff run when we can still make it without him, the whole point is the appearance not the depth we go.

It could easily be explained and washed away if the 'offer was too good' and it wont cost us a playoff spot (how could it, Marino slides up and Nemec plays however many minutes he can handle. And I doubt very much he wouldnt be able to stick on the third pair)

Past that - if we are close or barely out I guess you have to keep him because of how it looks in the locker room. But damn I wont be happy about it

Oh yeah, sorry, I misread that.

There's definitely a price point where I would try and have my cake and eat it too, but it would certainly require an overpay from someone.

5yearsx6mil brings him to 34. Johnsson and graves coming off the books and cap going up makes it easy to fit him

If the team keeps winning I don’t see them trading anyone. It’s bad form and sends exactly the wrong message to thr team. I doubt Graves would return a first and he’d be the only guy I could see them trade since they have Bahl and even Luke waiting in the wings.
I agree with my esteemed colleague Mr.My lol.
Finally making the playoffs after years of futility and you “reward “ the players / coaching staff by removing long serving players at the TDL and taking away from the roster ?? I can’t see Fitz doing that ever unless he is told by ownership ?
Plus can’t see him kicking Severson in the nuts like that by shipping him out just before the playoffs after him playing on a shit team for his entire career ( except one T Hall heart season he dragged the devils to the playoffs)

the devils have more urgent extensions or signings, which should be prioritized higher:
- bratt
- nearly the whole forward crew (only hischier, hughes, mercer, holtz and thompson have a contract for next season)
- blackwood or his replacement

Heis not getting 2 1sts as a rental.

you need to understand a few things

1 other teams cap space? Who has room outright for him without sending back similar salayas a dump?
2. many teams do not have either a 1st or a 2nd in the 2023 draft. Many teams are not giving up both. There are other teams who have traded away their 1sts in prior and future drafts but still have this one. They aren’t giving this years up.
3. I think this year will be a playoff battle among many teams so there are many clear sellers and those that are buying aren’t giving up a 1st and thrn miss the playoffs.

The second we think any of Bahl, Hughes, or Okhotiuk is ready to hold their own this year, Graves can go to the first to raise their hand. Severson should stick, he would be a UFA player to trade for if the Devils were in a good position at the deadline, so you just look at what you "would have got" as what we paid to get him, problem solved.

I'm thinking about the Devs being on the cusp(or better) of getting into the playoffs and moving 2 of their 6 everyday d men. Not totally against it but it's ballzy.

Only way either gets moved is in a hockey trade, they shouldn't be sold off as rentals unless the wheels fall off and they're out of contention by the deadline.

If that were to happen I'd think Severson gets a 1st and Grave is worth maybe a 2nd.
