Not all of these guys will be moved but 1 or 2 probably will at the deadline. Possibly 3 considering Luke Hughes will more than likely be joining the team soon (maybe by the end of the season).

There’s also the possibility that none of them are traded if the Devils are in the playoff race.

So how much are these guys potentially worth now or at the deadline?

Damon Severson - 28 y/o RHD
Final year of UFA contract 4,166,666

Ryan Graves - 27 y/o LHD
Final year of UFA contract 3,166,667

Kevin Bahl - 22 y/o LHD
Final year of RFA contract 795,000

The reasons the Devils trade Severson is because we have Hamilton and Marino at RHD tied up to long term contracts with Nemec, Walsh, and Casey in the system.

The reason they trade Graves is because there’s a log jam at LHD which will only get even tighter when Luke Hughes joins.

The reason they trade Bahl is because of the same log jam at LHD. This one is tricky because he probably doesn’t get traded if Graves goes. But they might want to keep Graves if they’re in playoff contention and Bahl has been having trouble getting ice time. But he’s young and big at 6’6. Thing is what do you do with him now? Send him back to Utica? Wait for an inevitable injury to get him in?

Florida should be calling about Graves and Bahl.
What are NJs needs?

I feel that the philosophy at the deadline is to bolster D depth and bottom 6 depth. Though there is depth on both sides of the D, the depth is too young to start trading away D if they are in contention. Specifically with Graves or Severson, to me there is more value in making a potential playoff birth with them and the growth of this team than anything they’ll return in a trade.

If you are trading Bahl and a pick for a bottom 6 body built for the playoffs, I can live with it.

NJ isn't doing anything anytime soon unless their season implodes.

They’re playing too well defensively to consider breaking up that squad now. That being said depending on how things look at the deadline, would love to see the devils hit up the blues to try and pry barbashev from them with the hopes to sign him long term as a middle 6 wing.

I would trade Graves if the return was worth it. I don’t think he’s doing much that Bahl can’t do plus the left side needs a spot open for when Luke joins the team.

Severson isn’t going anywhere. Too important this year, we’re trying to win.

Depending how Nemec looks in January and February will determine a lot. It is a lot to ask of an 18 year old but he is the 2nd overall pick, it wouldn't surprise me.
Let Nemec play a whole year in the Ahl. No reason to rush him at all. Luke Hughes will be the rookie they sign after his college year is done to burn year one of his deal

I'm not saying to rush him but if he is too good for the AHL by January or February and looks decent in the NHL then NJ should be sending Severson to the highest bidder.

Ok fair enough. If they are fighting or coasting into the playoffs to me I think the experience would worth more then the return. Have to turn the corner.

Bahl has been excellent in his brief time. He should be playing every game over Brendan Smith who is little more than a motivational coach at this point in his career.

Graves is almost certainly walking this summer. Luke Hughes is almost certainly going pro this spring, but I think it's fair to wonder how quickly he will need to adjust to the NHL game. I think they are planning on Bahl to be the pivot guy for this year and next.

Bahl seems like the kind of guy who they should be working in when they can but keeping for the inexpensive bridge deal. He offers that size/reach/sometimes physical defensive defenseman game that on an inexpensive contract should be more valuable to the team than in trade.
I could see Buffalo potentially having interest in him. (thinking for Roch in the short term)

No interest in trading anyone at this point. If we continue at this rate there is a good argument we are playing like cup contenders and not just playoff contenders.
If we fall back into what we thought would be reality then Severson and Graves are both trade bait with Severson pulling in a first.
Smith can be traded for a bag of pucks. Bahl is only getting better and I bet it is pretty close to unanimous that he should be playing over smith.
Bahl is a bottom pairing defenseman that should be a top four defensemen within a year or two but will never be more than a bottom pairing D in NJ considering the depth they have.
There is a good argument that next year and for the next handful of years bahl could be the second best bottom pairing D in the league.
The first best . Well considering NJ depth, One of Hamilton, Siegenthaler, Marino, Nemec and Hughes will be a bottom pairing defense in NJ barring any trade.
When you have Hamilton seigs and Marino all arguably playing like #1 defensemen and Nemec and Hughes projected to be #1 defenseman this team has the potential to go down as one of the best defensive teams in modern history.
