Is this a good idea?
There has always been a part of me who has questioned his validity as a star...there is a selfish hint, a spoiled child hint, even the fact that he is often out of playing shape. Will his body soon breakdown. Does he put in the work for longevity?
Never liked the stupid home run jacket when you are down by 6 runs. Seems so selfish. He pouted over that.
If I was running this team, I would move him, if possible.

Scherzer's status isn't looking too great...
For me, the Jays have to sign Vladdy pretty much at (almost) all costs.
I hope it gets done.
I don't disagree that they should have had this done earlier, but who could have predicted the insanity of the Soto contract completely resetting the top end of the market? Six months ago we were talking about Devers's $315 million contract as the best comparable and whether anyone would pay $300 million for a first baseman.Yup.
It's not just the $ amount relative to his on-field WAR. It's what it would mean to be losing the face of your franchise to the Mets or whatever and basically demonstrating that you're a 2nd tier team. And it's the financial impact that losing him would cause - TV ratings and interest would absolutely plummet.
He should have been signed 2-3 years ago and even a 'massive overpay' at that point probably would have saved the club $200 million over the length of the contract. The way this has been mucked up is incredible.
How much are the offering him?

Between the deferrals, his uniqueness as a player, and the insane marketing/TV contract value, I don't think Ohtani was a legitimate comparison point for anyone. The Soto deal nearly doubling the next biggest contract ever given changed everything.
I don't think the idea that they should have locked him up earlier is hindsight at all, I just think the Soto contract has made that decision much, much worse and cost them at LEAST an extra $100 million - probably more - because it blew the previous market for elite young free agent talent out of the water.I mean, teams have been locking up elite young talents early for quite a few years now. Atlanta have made out like bandits by doing it.
And the Soto deal literally just happened. There was no reason Guerrero couldn't have been signed in 2023 or 2024. I've been saying here for a year or two now that letting Bichette/Guerrero walk themselves to FA is a really, really bad decision. This isn't hindsight.

The Toronto Blue Jays should just pay Vladdy Jr the exact dollar amount he’s looking for and just call it a day. There’s no point in counter offering with a number that’s close but still antagonistic. At some point the loss of credibility to the franchise outweighs a dollar and cents conversation.
Yeah, the only point where I might disagree is that I don't see much reason to believe they could have signed him for all that much less in the last couple years than they could have after 2024. I kind of suspect he always saw the Devers contract as his comparable and was aiming for something like that despite his down 2023.Yeah, 6 months ago leaving things had left us in a position where we had Bad Option A) allow our franchise players to walk for peanuts vs. Bad Option B) re-sign them for $100 million more than we could have a year or two prior ... and the Soto contract changed Bad Option B to $200 million more.
Having said this : presumably the team knew during last season that they would try to sign Soto if he was available and that their offer would be massive ... so it would seem like common sense to get the Guerrero thing done first. It isn't like other teams bid Soto up and we were a small market team left holding the bag. We were one of the teams that did this to ourselves.
I don't feel a connection with him, because he doesn't speak to the fans. He's 26 years old and has never put in the effort to learn the language to be comfortable to speak freely. Hes been in the organization for 10 years, he's Canadian born.I want the Jays to sign him. But I don't have much of a connection to him.
