Blue Jays Discussion: Vladdy has signed 14 yr/500mil

Beautifully negotiated by Vlad and his agent. Absolutely bent the Jays over and made they look incredibly weak.

The contract will age poorly, doesn’t mean you can win with him inside the next 7-8 years. And if they do, that’s what matters the most.

Happy to be wrong.

Very surprised. I love it. The Jays are proving they will spend with the big boys, and with some major salary coming off the book in the next few years and some good cost controlled pieces in place ... they have kept their window open in a big way. Really hope they find a way to make Bo work also.

Yes it will age poorly. As fans you get to see Vlad be a potentially career long Jay and maybe have some monster seasons and hopefully playoff runs. That's worth it. The jersey sales will continue to pay his salary over the years.

Absolutely thrilled with this news. Would have been a complete disaster to lose him, and it would have sucked royally seeing Vladdy in any other uniform but the Jays.

If this at all has been a distraction for him this season, it is now behind him for good. Time to reward everyone with his first home run tomorrow (well I guess later today now).

I don't know how legitimate the sources are, but i'm seeing on social media that Shapiro apparently overruled Atkins and negotiated this himself to ensure it got done.

Wonder if they try to sign Bo now?
I wouldn't mind if they keep Bo around by any means but i think having a guy in the system that will take his place in Nimmala if he does walk probably makes them paying out the nose to keep him too a bit more unlikely.

On the other hand, this sends Bo a sign they're serious about competing so who knows? Nobody seems to really know what he's thinking with how close to the chest he plays it.

Unsure what is being implied by that -- Atkins didn't want to sign him to a long-term deal, or Atkins wasn't getting the job done to do so.

Best guess is that money didn't make "baseball sense" to Atkins and Shapiro is smart enough to see his value both on the field and what he does for the team brand.

Shapiro was only a cheap ass in Cleveland because of what he was working with. Rogers is multiple steps up from the jackasses that own that franchise so he probably pushed for it.

If that is the case, i would expect Ole Ross might be getting the boot sooner than we think.

I think we all understand that the money Vladdy asked for may not have made total "business sense" when compared to what he saw Ohtani and Soto got and him thinking he was in their stratosphere.

But Ross cannot be that deft in realizing that the value of the contract includes a whole lot of goodwill bought with the fanbase, let alone all the jersey sales that will come with it.

We keep talking about Rogers looking cheap and/or not going all out to win. They just made a huge commitment to their franchise player. A commitment this team would never have made 10 years ago with Beeston's completely bogus "no more than 5-year" rule. We can continue to shit on Rogers for some of the stuff they do to operate the team, but this is not one of them. They deserve full kudos for letting and making (even forcing) this to happen.

Here's where people are pulling the Shapiro stuff from; https://www.mlb.com/bluejays/news/mark-shapiro-optimistic-about-vladimir-guerrero-jr-extension

“We have such a clear alignment on the desired outcome,” Shapiro said. “Vlad wants to play his whole career as a Toronto Blue Jay. We want him to end his career in a Blue Jays uniform and be a true legacy player for the Toronto Blue Jays. That’s a pretty good place to start.”
Doesn't seem super far fetched. Shapiro understands how much it can do for a team to have a legacy/cornerstone type guy start and finish his career here.

Yup. One of those signings where his name prints money in the form of jerseys, advertising, what have you. Obviously not to the insane degree of Ohtani given he's god emperor of baseball's second most important country but still more than enough to make money on that deal.

Total panic move by Shatkins after getting swept this weekend.

They saw the future attendance analytic numbers dropping like flies and had mo choice but to give Vladdy what he wanted.

He’s nowhere near worth the contract. I don’t know what he’s done to even be in discussion for this type of number.
Two MVP calibre seasons. Hopefully he has a bunch more of those going forward.

I don't love the money, but the idea of having a lifelong Blue Jays legend for the first time is pretty great. I would have been thrilled with a Delgado overpayment to keep him in Toronto his whole career. I think this is huge for the organization, and I never would have expected Rogers to make a commitment like this just a few years ago.
