Blue Jays Discussion: New Contract offer to Vladdy? Berrios opening Day pitcher

Sounds like its all but certain that Vlad will hit the market. I can't imagine him being traded unless the Jays are far out of the WC race come deadline season, not that its the best asset management just what I am predicting.

It's going to be such an ugly situation if it comes to that.

As much as i do not care for Shatkins, i do not envy them in that scenario. Potentially being in a spot where the Jays are maybe floating a couple games above .500, but are right in the thick of the wild card race and they have to make a call on trading him at the deadline knowing he's gone anyway in the winter.

That's a scenario you can't win. Either the fanbase is pissed you essentially pulled the parachute on the season or that you tried to gamble on long odds at a postseason run.

I would personally blame Vlad for putting them in that spot and i'm sure many here would too, but the rest of the fanbase probably wouldn't.

I don’t follow the Jays closely but wondering have the fans turned on Vladdy? What kind of reception would he expect today?

I agree, I am not a fan of management. I don't think they had as bad an off season now that first pitch is here... early in the off season I was frustrated like alot of Jay's fans thinking they just needed to want to sign him and it would be done. If the rumors are true, Vlad has put the Jays in a bad spot no doubt in the sense he may not have been truthful in his negotiations... if he wasn't going to sign regardless of $, let it be known and move on rather than saving face with the fan base.

I do hope fans don't boo him, at the end of the day he has been a home grown talent and until he signs else where... he is a Jay.

I do think there has been a general switch in where fans are placing the "blame" with the Vlad situation from all on the front office to a lot more on Vlad. That being said I would be shocked if he gets boo'd at all this season. Now if he leaves? He has set himself up in a prime position to get boo'd for the rest of his career in Toronto if/when that happens lol

I think it's reasonable to place plenty of the blame for this situation on Vlad - it's become more and more clear over the last few months that his main priority is getting the biggest contract he possibly can.

I don't think it's reasonable to boo Vlad, though. He's currently a star player for the Jays, he's given his all for the organization for a decade now, and I don't begrudge him trying to get the best deal for himself. If it's his last year in Toronto, we should cheer him all the way out (and then we can boo the shit out of him when he comes back after signing somewhere else).

Are people actually optimistic about this team?

With the Vladdy contract stuff, the fact that Bo looks like he's gone soon, the over use of analytics BS by Schneider and Atkins.... It's all a bit grim.

Last season killed off my enthusiasm for this team, and i have a hard time seeing it come back any time soon.
Spring training brought what looked like a vastly improved offensive approach. More of a "let every player play to his strengths".

Vladdy and Bo not being signed is a huge downer, but both are motivated and there's still a world where both re-sign.

This seems like a good time for our regular reminder that most teams (particularly the best ones) use analytics more than the Jays.

There is reason for optimism. The bats looked very good in Spring Training. Quite a number of players had down years. Bullpen will be much better. Rotation is solid, although they are getting up there in age.

I would say I'm cautiously optimistic.

They looked better in spring training. New hitting coach, new approach at the plate, pitching should bounce back.

But there's a lot going against them too; the AL East being pretty solid being chief among them.

In my mind, similar to Boston they could win anywhere from 70 to 90 games and i wouldn't be shocked.

Not sure comparing Vladdy to Machado about their mindset in a contract year was the wisest thing to say. LOL

Machado has a reputation of being one of the biggest d-bags in the league.

Is it just me, or does Vladdy's ask keep going up every time one of these rumours comes out?

*Vladdy's looking for $450 million but the Jays aren't close*
*Jays are offering $400+ million*
*Vladdy's looking for $500 million*
*Jays are willing to go close to $500 million*
*Vladdy's looking for $550-600 million*
*Jays are offering $550-600 million*
Yup, for all the complaints of ‘shoulda been done earlier’, it’s pretty clear Vladdy sees his value at about 10-20% over each offer he’s ever received.
