Blue Jays Discussion: New Contract offer to Vladdy? Berrios opening Day pitcher

It's not me saying it, it's the advanced stats that show he is an elite defensive catcher. He is one of the best pitch framers and he's much improved throwing runners out.

Not sure what you mean by the last sentence.

I think last year he was ranked third defensively among catchers.

Some catchers that have a track record of having their pitchers performance improve with them and decline without them. I know what the stats say, he's really good defensively, and really good at framing. Even knowing that, I'm not a fan of his catching. Maybe If I could pick from the top 10 catchers, I'm being stubborn with my opinion but he would not be my choice as my #1 or #2 catcher. I dont see pitchers being the best version of themselves with him behind the plate.

I'm anxiously awaiting some unexpected news tonight that the Jays have signed Vladdy to a long-term extension, just in time for tomorrow's season opener. I don't know how far along or apart they are, I just am wishfully thinking both sides come together and get it done. This team needs a serious jolt of optimism heading into this season and future.

Vladdy free agency looming over the team all season long will not be fun. I'm in no mood to be counting down the days/games remaining we get to see Vladdy in a Blue Jays uniform.

I read rumors it was $30 to $50 million, I know, is that all :sarcasm: ? End of the day , if true that is max about $3.33 mil per year on a 15 year deal.

Did you miss Robbie Ray winning a Cy Young while pitching the majority of his innings and getting his best results with Kirk behind the plate? Did you miss Kevin Gausman as a Cy Young finalist while getting far better results with Kirk than with Jansen? Surely you remember Alek Manoah's breakout season where he, too, was a Cy Young finalist with Kirk as his personal catcher... right?

In his first year with the Jays, Bassitt's ERA was 2.52 with Kirk and over 9 without him. Last year, it was 3.88 with Kirk and 5.05 without him.

Berrios 2022: 4.85 with Kirk, over 5.5 without
Berrios 2023: 3.34 with Kirk, 4.06 without
Then Kirk became Berrios's personal catcher in 2024 for some strange reason.

Can't for Ryan Mountcastle to do the thing where he looks like an MVP candidate against the Jays and is then never heard from until the Os play them again.

Doesn't matter how good, bad or in between the Jays might be. We all know it's happening.
Super annoying. Just like brandon lowe or any lowe for that matter. At least dont have to face grayson rodriguez or henderson

I fully expect them to play Straw in CF, but I'd prefer Springer in CF, Roden in LF, Santander in RF so we get the extra DH bat—either Wagner or Schneider.

Roden — Springer — Santander
Clement — Bichette — Giménez — Vlad — Wagner/Schneider (DH)
Kirk

Vladdy or Bo
Bo seems to be healthy again , if he is back and the way Vladdy is acting .

Who would you rather sign ?

All pressure is on Vladdy imo. If it’s true they are pushing for 13-14 years at 550 million that’s a massive commitment to a 1B/future DH. It’ll really show what Vladdy’s priorities are. He said he wanted to be a Jay for life, ok bud time to show it.

On a more positive note I think Bo is going to have a massive year. He’s torn the cover off the ball and fingers crossed he stays healthy.

FWIW, Atkins said yesterday that the plan is that Straw plays CF against lefties, and that the other three could be options against righties. We've had indications that Roden could play once a week in CF and the rest in LF, and that Santander plays once a week in the field, but he is a better RF then LF.

Day one is likely:
Roden - Lukes - Springer with Santander as DH.

After that, I would expect the next two to include a Roden in CF with Schneider and Springer on the corners and another Roden - Lukes - Springer game.

Games 4 and 5 also project as righties so we stick with the main lineup (though Schneider might play LF once or twice and Santander will get his game in here somewhere). I expect Wagner to play 3B once or twice in this stretch).

Game 6 is against a lefty, so I expect Schneider - Straw - Springer in the outfield.

I would be shocked if Santander plays that much DH. I think he's going to play in the OF most days, including today.

For today, I would bet on Springer, Santander, Roden in the OF, Clement, Bo, Gimenez, Vladdy in the IF, Wagner (or MAYBE Schneider) at DH.

Arden Zwelling outlined a hypothetical scenario on a recent At The Letters pod: when the Jays have 7 games in 7 days stretches, according to him (in the context of what the team would do), "Santander wouldn't even play 5 of those days in the field."

Which implies that Santander will only play the field 4 out of every 7 days. He is probably going to end up with the most plate appearances at DH this season for the Jays.

He might play more as the season progresses, but right now, neither Santander nor Springer can play good LF (Springer because of reps and Santander because of physical limitations). I expect that getting Springer games will slowly allow him to play more there if Roden doesn't make the most of his chance (but if Roden runs with it, he's the perfect compliment as a LF who could play CF).
