Blue Jays Discussion: New Contract offer to Vladdy? Berrios opening Day pitcher

Well yeah, 86 wins definitely won't win the division because someone (likely at least a couple teams) is going to outperform their projections by a bunch. The projections just show how tight the division is and suggest every team is one or two breaks from being at the top (or tumbling to the bottom, depending how those breaks go).
That's fair. Probably the most competitive division of the 6 to the point you could tell me any of the 5 teams win it in October and i wouldn't be shocked. When i called the Jays weak i meant it more as i saw them as the least likely to win it next to the Yankees. But it's not like they're the White Sox stuck in a division full of teams like the Dodgers.

I'm actually somewhat optimistic about the season with everything being considered. Mostly because they at least in theory, fixed a lot of the sticking points from last year. Hitting coach changed, brought in an impact bat, (hopefully) less emphasis on outfield defense, tried to fix the bullpen.

They could win 90+ or lose 90+. Kind of an exciting division and by virtue, season.

There has always been a part of me who has questioned his validity as a star...there is a selfish hint, a spoiled child hint, even the fact that he is often out of playing shape. Will his body soon breakdown. Does he put in the work for longevity?
Never liked the stupid home run jacket when you are down by 6 runs. Seems so selfish. He pouted over that.
If I was running this team, I would move him, if possible.
Not so sure about the out of shape thing, maybe in his first couple of years, yes I'd agree, but he's looked good the last 2 years. He's pretty nimble over at first and moves around the bases with average speed.

The other stuff, I know what you mean, I get that same vibe off of our Captain.

He’s a drama queen. Never win with that kind of trash. The fact they didn’t trade is a joke. Everyone in management is a f***ing fraud and for them to have jobs is pathetic.

Such an unlikeable team

Such a petulant child. I already said this earlier in the spring but you cannot claim you don't want distractions in the form of negotiating in season only to do this shit (not the first time either which makes it even worse)

If I'm the Jays I draw a line in the sand; you get one final offer. Don't like it? You're on the first plane out of town to the Yankees. I'll happily take Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones for the trouble.

Guy isn't worth the 600 million he thinks he is. Don't let him hold you hostage.

There's more;

100% agreed. Management need to take control of the situation...yesterday. Vlad has already made himself look like an ass. If they let him walk for nothing at this point then both sides come out looking awful.

Yankees wouldn’t make that trade, when they can get him for free in the summer and give up no assets. The jays are caught in the worst possible position. If the team is good and Vlad has a monster year, he’s walking for free, if the team is bad, you might be able to trade him before the deadline but his value is probably lower than what it was last year.

It's ridiculous. I'm all for dudes chasing the bag especially with the money some teams are throwing around but the difference in conduct between the two big FAs on this team is not a good look on Vladdy.

Bo is in the same boat but you haven't heard nary a peep from him outside of a generic "sure i could see myself staying" as he puts his head down, works hard and keeps his focus on the season opening next week. If Bo does move on, the fanbase will lament it as you do when you lose a star, but there will be no hard feelings.

Vlad on the other hand has seemingly gone out of his way to piss off Jays fans with his antics. You're starting to see the sentiment turn on him in places outside of here so this isn't just an echo chamber thing.

86 as the benchmark to win the AL East seems a bit low given it's probably still the best in baseball. I unfortunately do believe at least on paper, the Jays are probably the weakest of the five teams.

Yankees: Downgraded from MVP level Juan Soto to "fine" Cody Bellinger. Still have a garbage can of a lineup outside of Judge, him and Chisholm. Pitching is elite but that has taken hits with Cole gone and now Gil gone long-ish term. I can confidently say there's no way this team should win the division

Orioles: Probably are the best team on paper and would have won it last year if all of their stars forgot how to hit a baseball post all-star break. Lineup is stacked but major questions about the starting pitching in the short term outside of Eflin/Rodriguez. They did get Tyler Wells back and will likely get Kyle Bradish back by the all-star break.

Red Sox: Most intriguing team of the bunch. Went out and got pitching help for both the starting rotation and bullpen. Appears like the time has come for their young nucleus of Marcello Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell to begin their transition to the majors to supplement a decent group of Devers, Bregman, Casas. (Campbell is expected to win the 2B job per sources out of Boston) Their rotation has the potential to be sneaky good too. Could see this team winning anywhere from like barely 70 games to 90+. Major boom/bust

Tampa: Lineup remains solid, if not unspectacular but their rotation is back in business with McClanahan, Baz and Rasmussen back. My pick to win the division imo.

Blue Jays: Major questions about the lineup with contributions expected from young guns, bullpen per usual. Remains to be seen if Santander is enough to take this lineup from junk to solid.

Red Sox are my pick to win the division as they are pretty deep everywhere. The rotation will be missing a few pieces off the bat but it's still solid and Fitts looks like a stud. Curious to see what they roll out there once Bello and Crawford come back.

But they'll need major contributions from Campbell (opening day) and Anthony (May?)

Bo never got a single offer

It's too bad Shatkins has screwed this franchise over cause now they are letting 2 prime talents walk out the door at the end of the year. Shatkins is running this team like a small market CLE.

If I trusted Shatkins to make good deals I would trade Vlad and Bo today and get MLB-ready prospects.

You can get a haul for Vlad and Bo in separate deals and retool on the fly with a younger competitive team.

Jays need to take a year off and make some organizational changes to bring in some BB people .. gotta lose these clowns from Cleveland
There are positives and negatives to them.

Using AA as an example, he had payrolls that gradually built up to 137M in 2014, then made some big trades in 15 (with a smaller starting payroll that forced longterm money on the current group)

There was inconsistency year over year and there were issues with the actual allocation that made it difficult to simply re-invest all the money (because of the aging core and lack of next layer).

With the current Jays, the payroll did a similar build, but the top has been more consistent (not going into a season with a 13M dollar lower payroll in what is supposed to be a contending season) and there are ways to build around any scenario (even if we don't like it as much). There is more reason to trust the payroll will remain this high for the foreseeable future now (even if the farm isn't great) because the current group won't fire sale all of the prospects, they will re-tool if the team is out at the deadline, they will flaunt their finances (people question the Straw deal because of why they made it, but he only makes 2.78M more than Grisham and Grisham was required to get Soto even with paying a huge amount)

Springer is arguably the worst contract on the team and he's only signed for two more years (and if he does fall off, he could theoretically become a 4th outfielder when one of the kids takes a spot). There are only 4 guys signed for 2027 right now (Santander, Gimenez, Hoffman, Rodriguez). If the Jays wanted to completely overhaul, they could use some combination of the kids playing (or being traded) and signing players to not ever miss a beat.

On the other hand, the current management's unwillingness to trust their own guys with contracts is infuriating.
