So Tkachuk still not changing to 7 come on
I’ve seen some of the better players in the NHL change numbers before. Selanne went from 13 to 8 in winnipeg. Bure went from 10 to 96. Sakic went from 88 to 19.

at some point a number is a number.

Personally I think it’s only odd that a player keeps their training camp assigned number rather than switch to something that they prefer.

guys like Myers, Hart, etc kept their assigned 57, 79. If you make the nhl you should pick something that you like even if it’s not your first choice. I’m a fan of 10, but if that isn’t available then I’d likely go 18, 8, 19, 16 or something.

It could be a superstitious thing where players don't want to change anything that got them stick to the nhl.

Some numbers look nicer than others but I think it's the player that makes the number cool.

I didn't care at all for #79, until I saw markov wear it his whole career in Montreal. Now I don't think it looks odd at all.

Along the same lines, not sure if he has a reason for wearing #39 or not, but I wish Mantha would pick a better number, never liked 30-ish numbers for forwards.

“When I came back to Everett, Connor was there waiting for me, like he usually did, and he was yelling at me trying to show me his new jersey. He had a Flyers’ jersey with Hart No. 79 on the back. When I saw that, I decided I had to stick with No. 79, because there is a No. 79 out there.
“I probably would have stuck with No. 70, because that was my number in juniors. But because Connor had the Hart No. 79 Flyers’ jersey on, I realized I couldn’t change the jersey number now. I didn’t think Connor would have been too happy if I had the wrong jersey with the wrong number on the back. Because it was Connor, he was one of our biggest fans and it was really cool how much love Connor and Cavan gave us. To them, they’re 6, 7 years old, they look up to us. I couldn’t let them down.”

This is actually a pretty awesome reason for sticking with #79

Flyers prospect Carter Hart has a very special reason for picking his new jersey number

78 T.J. Brodie
97 Joe Thornton

I don't know if these numbers will change or were randomly assigned because on the Maple Leafs website they list Joey Anderson with #28 and Travis Boyd with #72.

Plus Aaron Dell is also listed with #30, however Michael Hutchinson is also listed with that same number.

Even if numbers are available, prospects never get them. Jake Virtanen wore #77 at camp and only switched to his preferred #18 once he made the team. Same with McCann who wore #51 and made the switch to #91 (flip of his #19 in Junior).

For Hart, at least that's a better story than just sticking with his camp number. Technically, the Flyers could have just given him #70 at camp unless they had already given it out to another player.

For camp numbers, teams typically pick a range of numbers. LA back around 2010 gave the seventies to their guys, thus Pearson 70, Nolan 71, Toffoli 73, King 74 ended up keeping them.

This always reminds of one of Harry Neale's funniest lines. The Leafs brought up some kid from the farm to play and he was wearing #28. Harry Neale goes "I can't believe they gave him #28 to wear - I thought the Leafs retire Bill Root's number":laugh::laugh:

There won’t be any pictures of Kapanen in a Pens jersey for quite awhile because his dumbass is still in Finland since he decided to try to wait until the last second possible before returning to the USA.

He’s starting off wonderfully. He needed more vacation; six games in 10 months is exhausting.

Scrolling through that list, it was kind of frightening how many "wait, he's playing for WHO now?!?!!" moments I had.

I don't remember half of these
