We had a Netflix thread that was locked a few years back and I thought we had a thread during streaming wars stuff but dont see it listed anywhere

So figured I would start a general streaming news thread for occasional bumping/discussion

And here is latest from Netflix

So, subscribers are up and exceeding planned # so they decide its best to greedily raise prices again

Eventually they will start to lose subscribers to bullshit yearly price increases

Nearly all streamers are raising prices

I was told by a poster a year ago that Netflix would lose all it's members for raising the price and that his mom could no longer afford Netflix because of the dollar increase.

Well they just had a record numbers of subscribers...sooooo

Getting wrestling and sporting events (NFL and boxing) has been a huge coup for them.

Yeah I remember seeing all these complaints on my facebook as well about the prices being increased. Nextflix seemed to have done okay so far....

Is there anything better than a Netflix standup special in the 2020s?

“What’s the deeeal with trans people?”
Every Netflix standup special (except maybe Ronnie Chieng, any other good ones let me know) in the past 5 years is basically an already wealthy comedian whining "You can't even dooo comedy anymore!" while counting the several million dollars on stage they've been paid to do comedy.

That said, I'd be one of the 'new subscribers' Netflix is boasting about. Bought the $5.99 package to watch Squid Game and immediately cancelled. Netflix can and does spin a sign-up like mine as a 'new subscriber' even though I'm not, I had a subscription for just under a decade that I stopped a couple years back and my new "subscription" lasted 5 minutes. I'm an old subscriber who gave Netflix six bucks and I doubt I'm the only one folded into new membership numbers.

I mostly stay away from them for the same reason. Did stumble upon "Sheng Wang: Sweet and Juicy" from 2022 that I through was pretty enjoyable, so maybe give that one a whirl whenever you're in the mood.

The bastards got me to renew because I knew they were getting RAW on Mondays, but I'm already thinking of dumping it again to stick to my rotating streaming services monthly schedule. I don't think wrestling alone is enough to keep it every month, especially when I already have Peacock for the PPVs...excuse me PLEs and old stuff.

It's criminal how much Netflix has been able to dominate just based on getting in front of the field, becoming known as the default streaming service/verb and then relying on people not even trying other services. The super normie bubbles of America that have 5 other friends who have Netflix they don't want to be the person that has one of the other ones. It has little to do with their shows, if they were on the same network the Bell and Brody rabbi romcom thing Nobody Wants This (Netflix's biggest new show recently) wouldn't be a bigger hit than Apple's Bad Monkey where Vince vaughn plays a Fletch like detective in Keys West. The latter even has tons of minority casting like Netflix shows. If that was on Netflix shit tons of people would watch it just based on the picture.

This was incredibly confusing to read.

But the part I did understand I don't agree with, it's not criminal that Netflix was able to see the future before everyone else and start a great streaming network. They were the smart ones.

It wasn't confusing to read at all and makes perfect sense. And he's obviously not saying what Netflix did was actually criminal lol. Do you work for Netflix? You sure get defensive when anyone criticizes them. Mind you the post you replied to isn't even a critique of them so much as it's just a social observation and I think it's pretty accurate.

I've never seen this guy do stand up. Couple funny moments in the skit but why is he a " steaming pile of shit "?
Relax man, He's probably calling the special a steaming pile of shit not Schaub himself. His comedy absolutely is a steaming pile of shit. Not even close to be funny.

In my ideal world shows would be hits or not based purely on the content of the show, not the streaming service it's on creating confirmation bias effect before people watched it "expecting" Netflix to be better.

When I say based purely on the content of the show, eg. I'm willing to say that Marvel movies and Fast and Furious fully deserved to be hits. They are skilled in the sense that they intentionally made their movies accessible, fast paced, have one liners, etc. even if some of us are cynical about the repetitive formula.

I'm a Netflix hater but I can't really see what Netflix is doing in terms of writing, directing, plot, stars, etc. content that would justify lambasting the competition. They aren't making Marvel/Fast and Furious while the competitors are making Robert Eggers or Ari Aster version of TV shows. Everyone already knows people watch TV on in the background or to turn their brain half off, it's network TV's whole model. That's why Amazon made Citadel (not saying it's good) hoping people would watch hot people doing action stuff and you could look at your phone in the talking scenes. Netflix isn't winning because it has more shows you can watch in the background. I think it's main advantage is that people are emotionally influenced into supporting Netflix over the rival competitors and therefore see what they want to see.

With that said, audiences managed to follow Taylor Sheridan's shows to lowly Paramount+ so maybe I could be wrong.

And the great part is that Kanopy is free.

Just have to get a library card. And if you are member to more than one library, you can add those libraries and get more tickets to watch more stuff. It's crazy people don't support their local libraries more considering what those places can give back.

I'm relaxed

I've heard much worse than that guy. Not that bad
