Player Discussion Neon Leon Draisaitl

I think he's going to potentially have his pinnacle season as a player this year. No injuries entering camp and it seems like he has a burr in his saddle.

A pissed off and focused Draisaitl is a borderline unstoppable player and I think that's what we're going to get right out of the gate all the way through.

Leon is going to be coming in HOT this year. I can't f'n wait! In every picture i've seen of him or Connor this summer they just look pissed.

Isn't Leon free to negotiate a new contract after this upcoming season? Not that he wasn't going to be motivated enough to win the cup and have a big year already... but now considering the fact that he can re-sign a new contract next summer, I'm predicting an even more special year from 29 this season.

I like how much wrist time he gives that watch. I think it's a Rolex Sub? Just non-flashy understated class.

Drai on pace to beat his career best ES points total by ~15 points this year. 3 goals away from his career best ES goal scoring in a season.

Just a monster year. Would be pushing 100 points already probably if our PP wasn't so off this season.

We focus a lot on his ability to pass the puck, shoot the puck, and win face offs.

What's not talked about enough is his penalty killing abilities.

The 2014 3rd Overall pick is the most well rounded player on the team, and possibly in the league.

He may not be as flashy as Connor McDavid, but it would be extremely difficult to decide who would be first overall if they were to be drafted at the same time.

Neon Leon is pretty much Ryan Nugent-Hopkins + Connor McDavid in one.

To have such talent players on our team to watch, we are lucky.

For fun, who would you draft today if they were in the same draft year?
Never have favourites.

Currently Leon has 1.5 pts per game.

Mcdavid has been struggling and he is at 1.48 pts per game.

I think both are playing well and contribution wise I think they have been similar. So definitely a great year for Leon.

He's at a new level this year. He controls the flow of the game single handedly when he's on the ice almost every shift. I'm having trouble thinking of a historical comparable to be honest. The package of best passer in the league, top 3 shooter in the league, size + speed combo, ability to control the game, and defensive ability all from the C position might be nearly unprecedented. That's not to mention the nastiness, intensity, and gamesmanship he plays with.

If you were to give me a pen and paper and told me to write down a description of all the attributes a perfect C should have, he would pretty much be it.

You know what will be funny? Draisaitl text McDavid from Cabo while he's playing in the 4 nations (I assume this will happen because it's funny)

Sounds dumb but he's a much much better and faster version of what Jiri Dopita was supposed to be..

Dopita could slow an international game down like Draisaitl does, but he certainly couldn't do it in the NHL.

But Drai's shot is just something wicked. Never seen anyone ever shoot like Drai. From his angles. Drawing defenders into ansolutely nowhere then scoring with his timing and accuracy. Such a unique player with no historic comparables.

Jari Kurri was one the best best snipers this team ever had.

Leon Draisaitl is the best player in the NHL

Someone who is better at photoshop should shop his face on Mr. Perfect

The only player that comes to mind for a comparable is Peter Forsberg at his peak. Draisaitl is better than Forsberg was at his best but the ability to control a game and play with power and finesse were traits of Forsberg's game as well. And even though it's probably the closest comparable i can think of, it's still not a great comparison.

I've truly never seen a player just as likely to make a 130 foot gretzkyesque backhand pass through two zones right on the tape of a player at full speed as his is to snipe a wicked one-timer from a ridiculous angle. Not to mention being a puck possession monster along the boards while opposition players bounce off him, and all in the same game.

He really truly is a unicorn player.

It may be surprising for some of you. But, I am not surprised at all by what I said back in 2021. Draisaitl has in fact scored more goals than Ovechkin each season since, and Ovechkin will beat Gretzkys scoring record.

The key metric though, is OV avoiding serious injury throughout 20 years of playing, and piling up goals consistently late in his career. OV truly is a unicorn when it comes to that.

If we waited to do his contract (unlike with Bouchard) then we would be soooo screwed. He did us such a huge favor. My favorite Oiler for life for sure!
