Speculation: Need a New Coach: John Tortorella

IMO he shouldn't stop at just replacing the assistant coaches. Part of the head coaches job is to mentor his assistants and help them to succeed.

It would seem the Head Coach has no answers.

The PP is not a coaching staff issue. The turnover from last year did not improve it's effectiveness at all.

There is no point shot threat and no one-timer. Simple as that. The current PP requires time and space for catch and release shots on the player's strong side, or deflections off of low percentage muffins from the point.

Matthews is the only one-timer threat, and as good of a goal scorer as he is, that's not his best weapon and he tends to fade to the perimeter with his one-T's. You need multiple quick strike one-timers to draw defenders to the shooter and open room in the slot. Nylander refuses to use/work on his one-timer despite it being pretty effective and there's not a single D on this team that can pump it from the point consistently.

The PK will continue to just hyper focus on Matthews/Marner until this is fixed. Robertson is the only internal option that can help, but a Dougie Hamilton type is needed for the PP.
 
Keefe has turned Toronto into a decent team, and needs to figure out the playoffs... sadly, we lose while he learns.
none of the other options have really fared better in the playoffs.
Boudreau is a playoff choker as a coach when he had great teams too.
Tort likely isnt a 'fit' but, at least he won once.
Claude Julien is available isnt he, and he blew a 3-0 game lead before learning and making enough adjustments to win a cup the next season.
or maybe Keefe can follow a similar path, or we can hope he can.

while I don't disagree with that in principle (also applies at even strength), they haven't had a real point shot threat in a long time and have had a good powerplay without one.

when you have the top goalscorer in hockey and a top 5 playmaker, there is no excuse for things being as bad as they are.

you change it until you get it right.

why a defensive centre who was best known for faceoffs is running the powerplay tactics is kind of a mystery to me anyway.
