News Article: NCC putting in a lot of conditions for the downtown site

Okay, so I am driving from 2 hours away, with 3 other people in the car. Should we all bring bikes? I am always the DD and riding a bike wont be a problem, but two of the others like to drink, should I get a bicycle built for 2 and make multiple trips to and from the car to the arena? Where do I park the bike during the game? Will there be adequate bike parking?

The Federal Government seem determined to have the Sens move to Quebec City. I would think the City Property down near Lebreton on Bay Avenue I believe, might be a better situation dealing with the City than with the Liberal Federal Government who are clearly anti-business & consumed with bureaucracy.
It doesnt matter which party is in power. The NCC is run by frittata's.

The “Federal” Government in Quebec is a whole other beast, I reckon.

So much of this is just performative theatre on behalf of the NCC. They need to appease the people who don't want an arena on the site, will whine about "handouts to billionaires", blah blah blah, so they need to show just how socially and environmentally conscious they are. The reality is that parking will pop up in the neighbourhoods surrounding the arena, and Uber will do a massive business on game nights...

The QC government is much, much worse than the Federal Government. It is one of my main arguments when discussing separation with other Quebeckers "You want Revenu Quebec over CRA? You are an idiot"

This is just the NCC giving their HR people a bit of time to shine (I'm in HR in the GoC, I deal with this nonsense and DEI all the time) but I very much doubt this is going to be a legit stumbling block for the project. HR people make at least 100K (not me because I'm a single white man though!), their salaries need to be justified at least a couple of times per year.

I had a feeling this thread would get political. LOL.
Yep, I had the same feeling. I’m not sure anyone here would know the full extent of NCC’s thinking.

After reading the article, I had a feeling that some of the criticism would coalesce around parking, or lack thereof. Maybe the parking is part of a different plan, or would be handled by other landowners (not NCC). Who knows? Folks might have to wait for the full plan versus the partial plan.

Andlauer may also decide to walk away from the NCC. Lots of different outcomes.

The NCC doesn't think, it just mooches.

Once this land is developed, they will become (even more) useless, they know this and this is a big reason why they are dragging their feet.

I would remain astonished if this doesn't happen, but it will take 10-15+ years, the NCC has no incentive to move at a reasonable pace.

My perspective is both as an insider and outsider. I was born & raised in Ottawa, but haven’t lived there for decades. Relative to many cities, Ottawa is actually quite nice/beautiful. I think some things and some organizations must have played some role in that, maybe even the NCC. Sometimes a wider perspective is necessary.

The NCC does stuff for sure, they don't just sit around and do nothing, that's not how the world works. They aren't much of a net positive though.

It is just another example of how unproductive Canada is: we want governments to do everything, so we let them, and they do a little of it while getting paid way too much to do it.

And I like government! I'm not some chud who thinks free markets exist and that governments are bad.

NCC are a bunch of lunatics - Get the F out of the way.

This so why Ottawa and in part Canada are behind in everything.

Too much regulation and demands instead of just opening the flood gates and have people build!
Gotta keep subsidizing the boomers who own their multiple homes to the detriment of everyone who came after them!

"ohhh you'll benefit from the wealth transfer when your parents die"

Yeah well I'm over 40, it would have been nice to NOT get f***ed in the ass by the boomers in my 30's! Also, I love my parents, telling me "I should look forward to them dying" is f***ed up

Who the f*** is going to be riding their bikes to the game on a -20 Tuesday night in February lmao
The same geniuses that decided to build outdoor bus stations in what is often the coldest capital in the world must've hooked the NCC up with their crack dealer

The bike/walking bridge is to connect the site for summer use to other areas. It was a click bait way to start the article. Nothing burger.

Hopefully these boomer parents just help you out with finances from time to time rather than hold onto everything until they die, and then you get 500k or a million or something (whatever their house is worth+ some)

My grandma on my dad's side always helped out when we needed a major repair or purchase, and then my grandma on my mom's side wouldn't give $10 but would sit on 6 figures in a savings account.

Perhaps rather than wait for boomers to die, which I would hate, as I love my parents, have a heart to heart about them possibly downgrading from their million dollar home and giving you some of that money so their kids and grandkids can afford a needed new car and to put their kids in competitive sports or something.

Would also go a long way of having more single family homes hit the market...more options for us 30 and 40 year olds with kids living at home.

All the NCC employees ride their bikes to work in the winter. ;)

My parents definitely helped me a lot, mostly because I'm a first ballot f*** up!

It sucks when my dad tells me "my generation took everything they could from you, I fought against it but I lost"

Park and ride take a train in from the outskirts is what it looks like it will take.

Same here. My parents help out a lot. It makes a difference.

I know other people's parents had a "me first" attitude with their children and would remortgage their house so they can go on fancy trips because YOLO but want to give their kids nothing when they pass. It's funny how different people have different priorities.
