I feel like this is not a fair post. Habs would rather have Romanov than #13. #13 was just a stepping stone to get Dach. If their was no Dach trade lined up their their would be no Romanov trade.

The only real way to assess the trade is to view it as Romanov for Dach.

Are you implying that Montreal gave up on Kotkaniemi? They actually had him penciled in for 2c until Carolina publicly pantsed Marc Bergevin.
Well, they did give up on Kotkaniemi, they would have matched otherwise. I'm not implying that they should have matched, sometimes a change of scenery is needed and it makes more sense to cut your losses.

Dach was great till he hurt his wrist playing for the juniors. Could it be that it still isn't right, or was he simply brought down by the mess that is Chicago?
great value for the habs. He ain't close to done
We had a lengthy discussion a couple days ago on HF Jackets about trading pick #12 for Dach. Nazar was the player most were focused on drafting there, and the more popular opinion was that Nazar > Dach. And I fully agree with that.

I mean currently, yes Dach is a more solid bet. He is in the NHL. But Nazar's upside is a lot higher. Dach doesn't have the sense to be a top scoring forward.
Dachs potential is way higher. This is nuts. He had one bad year coming off an injury.

It's hilarious to me how size is being dismissed more and more when we see every year in the playoffs how important it is...not saying you can't have smaller players but they better be impact players otherwise there's nowhere else to put them

Well I was hoping like hell Columbus wouldnt trade 12 for Dach and wanted Nazar at pick 12 so... Im gonna go Nazar. Ive never been Dach's biggest fan and every since the wrist injury I havent seen any growth. I dont even notice him when they played Columbus

thats fine and dandy but simply being big isnt enough either. You need a lot going right for successful playoff hockey. Also Kucherov and Point are both listed under 6'0" and were the best 2 forwards on the ice for 2 championship runs. When it comes to high end skill like I believe Nazar has, draft that and surround them with size like Tampa did.

Nazar is too small for my liking and had the Habs drafted with #13 it would be highly unlikely they would have selected Nazar. This was a weak draft after pick 6.

This was certainly a gamble for the Habs and it comes down to Romanov vs Dach. Nazar does not factor into this at all.

The Isles might win this trade and Chicago may come out the loser if Nazar never plays an NHL game or becomes a 3C / 4C.

The Habs needed a center and could have kept the 13oa pick acquired by trading Romanov, and with that Nazar if they had waited, instead of trading for Dach.

Which of these players looks to have more potential in the long run?
I don't think the Habs need another smurf. Dach will do more for them in the long run.

its not Dach vs Nazar, its Dach vs Romanov.

The habs wouldn't have traded for the 13th pick if not for the Hawks wanting a top 15 pick for Dach.
but the Habs couldve just kept 13th overall (even if that wasnt their intention), as it wasnt a 3-way trade. The Habs made 2 trades.

In the end, the Habs chose Dach over 13th OA, and the Hawks chose 13th OA (Nazar) over Dach.

It was essentially a 3-way trade. The trade was negotiated before the draft even began.
Hughes was not interested in getting a prospect with the 13th pick, he was only interested in Dach. He wouldve done Romanov straight up for Dach if thats what the hawks wanted.

Hughes wouldve never traded their 22 year old top 4 D if the end return was just a draft pick.

The only options were keeping Romanov or getting Dach.

For the Isles it was 13th vs Romanov.
For the Hawks it was Nazar vs Dach.
For the Habs it was Romanov vs Dach.

Hopefully it's a win/win for all 3 teams. Romanov looks to have a good future on the blueline. Dach, if he can get healthy, has beastly upside. I know nothing about Nazar, I just have hope.

Hows Dach playing? Nazar will probably be in the AHL until the trade deadline. Looked bad in preseason but very good in the AHL.

He is doing okay. Coming back from a major injury (missed the whole season). It does not help that Laine got injure. So the Habs has only one good line.

The biggest problem with Dach is his history of injury. He can be a good player if he stay healthy.

I bet Dach will look real good playing with Laine later on this season. But he's been playing with Newhook and Armia most of the season. If i'm not wrong, he's had 4pts (in 3gp) playing on the 1st line since last week.

But the real question is can he stays healthy? I wouldn't bet on it

habs pushing a lot for him to play center but I'm pretty sure he is 2 time better at wing, 60-70 pts player on wing with a high risk of injuries

Thread resurrection fooled me for a bit.

I still take Dach here so far. He's a very rare combo of talent and size. And even if he doesn't stick at C he'll still be a valuable winger. But neither team should be disappointed with the trade.
