It's more logical to suggest that one of the best players in the game probably knew what he was doing, particularly based on the results, rather than some contrarian "you can't prove the opposite isn't true" flying spaghetti monster hypothetical.
The media doesn't care about Rory or his goals. They only want bloody gore for their headlines. Rory and all the other athletes know this. So shunning the media after a shitshow finish is just denying them their red meat, while allowing the player to focus on improvement rather than dwelling on the negative.
We could write books on why this makes more sense than "who knows if he would've played better if he'd talked to the media".
