Nathan Mackinnon's legacy is at a pivotal point

To be fair some people basically discount Brad Park and Shea Weber's careers for not winning a Norris despite consistently being the second best dman in the league in many seasons. There will be people saying that kind of revisionist crap about Mack, they're just too young to post on HF yet, or not born at all.
Mackinnon won the Hart and the lindsay though. He also won a cup which those 2 guys didn't.

Joe sakic never won an AR , I don't think it hurt his legacy. Mackinnon has better mvp results as well outside of each's lone win. He had the same hardware case as mackinnon + a CS, which would actually bolster mackinnons legacy the most at this point. AR would be nice but it's not making or breaking anything here. Winning a 2nd cup as a #1C and adding a CS would be much bigger

And do you think that Brad Park or Shea Weber care?

We can discuss how kind or unkind history will be to Mackinnon all we want, I'm just taking issue with the OPs stance that Mackinnon should care or that it's some kind of crisis point for him. 'He simply can't allow Kucherov to beat him again. He has to get as many points as he can. His legacy depends on it.' Or, you know, he can enjoy being a great player, making millions, winning a Cup(s) and some hardware and representing his country internationally.

I don't think he does. His legacy is the number of 0's in his bank account/assets.

He’s one of the best of his generation, a Cup winner and sure-fire HOF’er. Who cares if he’s not regarded as highly as Kucherov, McDavid or Draisaitl? It’s a subjective ranking…if someone has him ahead of McDavid or well behind and in the next tier down, it simply doesn’t matter. The debating is just for shits and grins anyway; they’ll all have plaques in the Hall.

Why is it getting personal like that? I don’t think OP even implied that MacKinnon himself should care. We’re on a hockey message board in 2025. Clearly we’re talking about legacy in terms of how fans, both present and future, as well as historians perceive it. None of this matters, yet here we are, acting like it does.

Even Avs fans aren't pushing the issue with MacK this year. All you find though is other fans trying to make a story about Drai stealing it from him or Kuch. Or how it's Helle or Hughes. But wait, don't count out Connor, he always catches up.

Maybe we can just enjoy how good he is and how rare it is for someone to keep getting better with age.

For years the hockey media tried to tell us he was at or near McDavid's level. He skates fast so he must be McDavid 2.0. They gifted him the Hart last year to try and self fulfil that errant prophecy. The truth is he never came close to winning a cup or a major individual trophy until he had Makar leading the way. He might finally win the Art Ross this year just because Kuch and Drai have missed several games.

McDavid, Kuch, Drai, and Makar and all better players. Mack is at best 5th right now.

well Kuch is doing it in 5 games less so get over it. This is not a pivotal point for Mackinnon's legacy.

This next month means a lot to how people will perceive Nathan Mackinnon in the future. He is currently tied with Kucherov in the Art Ross race. However, he led by double digits a week ago. He simply can't allow Kucherov to overtake him for the second year in a row.

In the present moment, there seems to be a "Big 4" of the 2020s. Connor McDavid, Nikita Kucherov, Leon Draisaitl, and Nathan Mackinnon. However, future generations might not see it this way if Nate doesn't win an Art Ross. It will only be the "Big 3", leaving him out of it. He has to focus and rack up as many points as possible in the regular season, his legacy depends on it.

..mulletman?

He finished 2nd in one of the closest hart trophy races in recent memory, before makar ever stepped foot in the nhl

Simply can't afford Kucherov to overtake him? Alright then.

I would imagine it's much more important for Nate what happens in the playoffs. He is already taking the foot off the gas a bit, the Avs have very little to play for until the playoffs roll around.
That’s exactly what the oilers fan have been saying. Lol

I’ve said this a billion times cups over anything else. Something McDaid doesn’t have.

Why would the stats race in one season against a legendary player have anything to do with the legacy of a player already recognized as ultra elite?

Make no mistake MacKinnon himself do care about winning the scoring race or not, he would never be amongst the best point producers in the world otherwise. Don't you think he is aware of it?

lol no. Mackinnon can do absolutely nothing for the rest of his career and he is in the hall of fame. He had the Cup which is monstrous for elite players. We all know a few cough cough who still don’t and does not look close to getting one either.

Good thing for your worry that he got it last year because many thought Kucherov deserved it last year. Don't worry tho. He's got enough love to keep his legacy.

You're right. Maybe I'm reading tone and intent that isn't actually there.

Idk. Just reads unneccesarily sensationalist to me.
