What's going on with Nathan Mackinnon, and why does it seem like he's not taking his place among the very elite in the NHL?

Every year since his rookie playoff scoring frenzy he seems to have fallen short of expectations. This year he looked fantastic at the World Cup, but the production in Colorado once again looks subpar. Is he playing well and the numbers aren't a true reflection? Is it the Roy/Sakic dysfunction? Is he just overrated? What's the scoop?

He's 11 games in with a 3% shooting percentage(no way it stays that low all season), and he still has 6 points. He'll be fine.

I was wondering this myself. I know last year Roy had a stacked line of Landeskog, Duchene, and Mackinnon for a small stretch and they tore it up.

Yes! An anti jinx thread about MacK! Finally the hex is broken and he'll score!

Seriously, he's fine. His advanced stats are good, he still has 6 points. He's gotta work on a few facets of his game imo (relying too much on one move), but I think he'll be just fine. Not worried at all about him this season. Soderberg and Comeau on the other hand...

Same deal with Rantanen. Awesome fancy stats, incredibly low shooting%. Put both of them together and their slump just feeds into eachother. Once one gets going the other will likely follow.

Mackinnon and Johansen are killing me in my pool. Wish they would pick it the **** up.

I was expecting both of them to have breakout 75+ point seasons.

he's playing great

In reality...

6 points in 11 games and is doing everything right, the advanced stats just go to show that this isn't normal for him. Hence the faith that this isn't going to be who he is.

The advanced stats aren't the end all be all, but they absolutely tell an interesting part of the story. They also need to be taken in context. The context here is that MacKinnon doesn't suck and that this is just a slump (that many players have).

He's not using his speed and strength enough to challenge defenders, choosing to pull up too much. He's not a player that should slow down the game as much as he's doing.

He has all the tools to be a 80 point guy. If he'll ever consistently be one we'll see.

He has a 3% shooting percentage because he takes low percentage shots and is also wildly inaccurate missing the net a tonne. He likes to go in from the rush and shoot a lot which usually ends up in the goalie's chest protector. I'm an Avs fan but I don't expect MacKinnon to score more than 30 this year until he improves his shot and his hockey sense.
