This is a LOL argument we've heard too many time from Oilers fans. To reference playoffs when you didnt win a Cup compared to the guy who did.

Would you rather have the team/player that wins the Cup in 16-18-20 games or the team/player that loses in 25 games, but obviously has more games to pad his individual stats?

Cup > Points all day every day and MacKinnon won his team the Cup when it mattered. Game Set Match until McDavid gets one.

McDavid would more than likely have won the Cup with the Avs back when MacKinnon won it. This is why Cups being more important than points becomes completely invalid when it’s used in a black and white context.

Yup. Remember when the Hawks fan swore up and down Toews was better than Malkin or Crosby because at the time the Hawk had one 3 cups. Lmao. Lord that did not age well.

I’m not sure why anything other than last year’s playoffs is relevant to a conversation about last year, but regardless, thinking that performing worse in fewer games because the team around him was better is a greater feat is an LOL argument.

Honestly McDavid’s playoff stats are just ridonkolous though

Cap is a thing. Insert McDavid's 12.5M and remove MacKinnons 6.3M

Any combination of $6.2M here is gone. Take your pick, but sure in make believe fantasy NHL 25 GM no cap mode, sure.

Burakovsky - $4.9M
Kadri - $4.5M
Toews - $4.1M
Lehkonen - $1.15M
Helm - $1M

A. Were talking about 21-22 to present day where MacKinnon has been on par or superior since. I am putting stock into the best hockey team we've seen in nearly 40 years winning the Cup in 20 games and MacKinnon being the guy with 1-1 in the clinching game winning 2-1. McDavid willed his team to Game 7 in 25 games putting up a billion points only to put up a goose egg when it mattered.

2. CUP > everything. Plain and simple. Thats why we play the game.

III. Also the insecurity of Oilers fans having to rush into this thread is a LOL in itself also.

This is kinda tantamount to Canucks fans arguing Hughes over Makar. It's not correct, but in a small enough sample the argument is had none the less.

McDavid is still better. MacK is making the argument real. And maybe with more time the trend stays as is. Maybe it doesn't.

3.75 seasons and a Cup is a "small enough sample"?

MacKinnon is the better even strength player.
McDavid is the better PP/play only against junk Canadian teams player.
MacKinnon is the more clutch player.
McDavid has the higher jersey number showing his insecurity.
MacKinnon has the larger balls.
McDavid has the higher voice.
MacKinnon has better diet.
McDavid is the MVP when loses.
MacKinnon is the MVP when winning

Using this logic, then Craig Adams > McDavid.

Here we go with the Giroux versus Crosby convos again.

I actually agree that if you add McDavid and remove MacKinnon, Burakovsky, Lehkonen, and Helm this Avs team likely still wins the Cup, but I dont like when people put teams together without taking into account cap ramifications.

If the Avs had McDavid, then they wouldve been limited in some of their deadline deals. Simply acknowledging that. And obv if it was Kadri instead of Burakovsky, can quickly argue the other way that the Avs wouldve lost to the Blues or Lightning.

This argument is dumb. Surely you can see the difference between a 4th liner who got lucky being on good teams vs the highest paid player on a team. You can absolutely get carried to a cup victory if you're a grinder playing 10 minutes a night but as the first line Centre and highest paid player on the team you have to perform for your team to win the cup.

People are weird.

McDavid’s the best player in the world.

MacKinnon is phenomenal. He’s had a lot of success. And he’s not the best player in the world. Winning 1 championship doesn’t change that.

I can. I can also tell the difference between the best player in the world and MacKinnon.

Who would you have said was the best player in 2021?
Honestly that is the worst year to choose because of the all Canada division. McDavid had his highest ppg and highest ppp/pg average of his a career then and only Toronto was remotely decent, still with awful D and G.

Here is since 2019 and IMO MacKinnon has a real argument to be on par with McDavid since then even strength. He had the Canada season and 22-23 where the PP was off the charts good. Since it has cooled down, he is slowly letting MacKinnon catch up overall.

Top 10
