If he stays relatively healthy he actually has an outside chance at catching his buddy Sid. If he finishes the year with 25 more points and averages 105 points over the next 3 years he’ll already be at 1341 points at age 32. If Crosby keeps up his pace and doesn’t miss any games for the rest of this season he’ll be at 1681 points at the end of the season. Which means Mackinnnon would only need to average 68 points per season from ages 32-37 to match Crosbys likely total at the end of his age 37 season. Now of course Crosbys overall career is on another level and he’s had far worse luck with injuries especially in his prime but it’s pretty amazing that MacKinnon has a decent chance of eclipsing Crosbys career point totals.

Unless mcdavid has another great playoff run. We have a new best player in the world. Or at least forward
No we don’t, MacKinnon has been better this year but it takes more than 1 year for someone to overtake McDavid and it’s not like MacKinnon is on his own level this year. Draisaitl has been just as good this season and is more likely to win the Hart.

I remember MacKinnon saying in the Spittin Chiclets interview he was afraid that after year 4 he was worried that he was a bust… but ever since then, he’s been a damn animal, flirting with best in the world status.

Have any other players had an arc like this? Usually the all-time greats, particularly centers, are amazing right out of the gate.

I don't think this is true at all. There is a reason Crosby was the youngest player ever to score 100pts in the NHL....it usually takes time. I think MacKinnon's arc is actually much closer to the norm than the opposite. Without going to far down the scoring list amongst current players, Draisaitl and Kucherov didn't come in and light the league on fire right away and they were older coming in than MacKinnon as well.

Were going back to the start of 21-22 MacKinnon has been superior ES. Now 4 seasons. Throw in everything with PP being the main difference and MacKinnon is ahead starting 23-24.

So best case you have the argument McDavid has been better during the Covid seasons where he was able to beat up on the crappy Canadian teams and lean on the PP.

I think this is the main thing that makes it look like MacKinnon had a strange arc. He came in as a young 18 year old so he was still 22 when he became elite. If he came in at 20 instead suddenly it doesn’t look that abnormal. He also came in on a team that was very good and then suddenly went downhill. So he was better on paper as a rookie than the next three years, but he was also much more insulated.

There’s a reason why when the game is in its natural state MacKinnon stands out the most. At this point in time he easily has a case for best player in the world, though I have no doubts McDavid gets back to his normal self soon and that will be a challenge to hold onto that case.

Mackinnon is the modern day lafleur.

Hyped up #1 OA picks, good rookie year and then see a dip in production for the next few years.

Just when you think they may never live up to their hype, suddenly they're all time greats. Not exact parallel but there are similarities

That gets thrown around here a lot and I am still curious what exactly is wrong with McDavid? My argument is nothing and other teams are simply a tad bit better against the Oilers PP.

His best season was 20-21 when he played only Canadian teams who were all garbage at the time outside of TOR, so obvious asterisk there. 22-23 was historic and you can see below why with an insane PP. Obviously he deserves credit for said PP, but I think its pretty easy to argue he is currently playing at normal.

I'd argue at bare minimum MacKinnon has been on par with McDavid since 19-20.

Definitely has a shot.

Its kinda crazy how many guys in this generation have a shot catching Crosby.

It's almost like scoring is up...

It’s been 2 years

Somewhat sarcastic but...

Was it kind of classless to challenge the offside on the first call?

I mean, you're Chicago and the points don't matter. If the refs missed the call on the ice, why not let the guy have his moment?

Just a very 'NHL' moment.

Now do playoff points over that same time frame

It’s been 2 years
Not when you factor in McDavids playoffs last season

He is definitely the best empty net point getter this year! I'll give him that.

Eh, when you factor in the playoffs, I’d argue McDavid was better overall last year.
This is a LOL argument we've heard too many time from Oilers fans. To reference playoffs when you didnt win a Cup compared to the guy who did.

Would you rather have the team/player that wins the Cup in 16-18-20 games or the team/player that loses in 25 games, but obviously has more games to pad his individual stats?

Cup > Points all day every day and MacKinnon won his team the Cup when it mattered. Game Set Match until McDavid gets one.
