I think I have said this about every 5 games since the season started...but Skjei has not been what we picked out from the FA catalog. He's the wish version of a steady D-man. If this style isn't going to fit his play, then we are in for a long contract.
I think he has spent most of his season with Josi who has spent most of his time acting like a defensively illiterate forward. That's a tough task.

That defense is... surely something.
The real pairings

Josi - Carrier
Skjei - Josi
Skjei - Carrier
Josi -Schenn
Skjei - Schenn
Wilsby - Blankenburg - 10 mins each

So based on Mason's comments I guess the plan now is to basically move off guys that can be traded and hope whoever new gets in the lineup can get the rest of the team going.

Also he basically admitted they are throwing crap at the wall and hoping something sticks. Hate to tell him it's not going to get better as long as guys like Stamkos are pulling that much 5v5 time.
What comments?

Man I sure wish with all of these blueline injuries we had someone who was proven to be able to play with Josi... Wait didn't we have a guy?

I'll say, the only reason I still have hope for Skjei is just based on the fact that every single one of our Dman has looked worse this year. We have nobody playing at even their normal level, it's all regression even for the players who didn't have room to regress.

Skjei is clearly lost in trying to learn our system having played in one of the strongest systems in the league for multiple years. But the reason I'm concerned is that mechanically, he looks bad. Bad passer, slow skater, inconsistent decision-maker. Those things are not all system-dependent.

I was messing around with AI art in our GDT and The Machine accidentally created your new mascot:

So if one of you could email Trotz and make this happen it would be good for the sport

I don’t think it’s the system, I think it’s playing alongside Josi. No one knows where he’s going to be and wherever it is it’s usually not where a defenseman should be.

Bad passing,, maybe he’s passing where someone should be but arent.
Slow skating, maybe he’s questioning where he’s supposed to be skating to within the framework of the system.
Inconsistent decision making, maybe he’s other players aren’t where they’re supposed to be or maybe he’s overthinking where he’s supposed to be going.

I could be completely wrong and he could just be a bad player but I think his time in Carolina and what he was able to do there shows he’s actually a good defenseman.

I agree. Pretty much our whole team looks awful, and I have faith that the big FAs would look and play better under a different coach (maybe not enough to make their signings worth it, but better).

I'm convinced this is what is wrong with a lot of the team. Too many guys thinking about where they should be, don't know where they should be, guys not being where they should be, and it all just slows everything down, causes turnovers, bad passes, and inconsistency.

The better games we play you can almost bet that they are the ones the Dmen tend to play more conservative that night for some reason. When they starting diving on the net and trying to make plays you can bet we are going to end up with a ton of breakaways, odd man rushes, and just poor play in general.

While we beat Winnipeg the other night, you watch them and their passes are crisp and right on the money. It goes to your point of knowing where your guys are going to be. Our passes either miss way ahead of the guy or are in the skates. It was truly amazing to watch how good they look compared to us. The NJ game was the same thing. Other good teams have an easy structure the guys can follow and it shows.

Watch our spacing and that should tell you all you need to know about the team.

On Skjei: He played very well in the Hurricanes up-tempo system. He was able to play very fast, play defense, contribute on the offense. It's what got him the contract.

What's different? It's not a change from an up-tempo system to an up-tempo system. I strongly suspect its going from a structured system that played fast to a chaos system that's supposed to give an illusion of being fast.

So 23 games into the season

Last year: 11W 12L 22P
This year: 7W 12L 4OTL 18P

Still waiting for us to show any real sign of stringing a couple wins together. Any kind of life. Next 3 games are agaisnt actually good teams and 2 are part of a back to back. I expect 3 more losses personally which would put us 8 points behind last season. If we manage to win somehow, we would only be 2 points behind last season.

I actually thought - for 50 minutes at least - that was one of our better games of the year. I mean, with all the chances we got, how do you not score more than two goals??

Barring that epic collapse during the last 10 seconds, I think people would actually agree with me here.

That was an awful team they played. It's easy to "look good" against awful teams.
