Nashville Predators Talk - 2024/2025 Season II

Well, this been a shit show of a season this trade deadline too. I would say take a deep breath and look at what’s left, but nothing happened.

Nothing will evere Trump the fire sale year as far as a dagger to the heart, the only thing that can beat almost losing your team is actually losing it.

However, from a roster/direction standpoint it has never been this bad. Even coming out of the fire sale the fans had hope things would get better, but right now there is no hope, none, zero.

We have one of the oldest rosters in the league, we have traded or waived several young players, refused to trade players despite seeing one of the best sellers markets in history, and in doing so are actively helping a team rebuild their own future from our mistakes.

Sometimes being a good GM is about doing the things you would prefer not to do to make your team better. It also may mean making some hard decisions to have some stability in the franchise. Not only is Trotz not doing the things he needs to do to make the team better the team has zero stability.

If I were a young player in this franchise I would be demanding a trade, if I were in college I would refuse to sign. I would have zero confidence that the franchise would get me in a place to succeed and making a good living.

Trotz gives away Schenn for a 4th to facilitate dumping Novak.

Dubas turns around and flips Schenn for a 4th... and a 2nd.

I really hope that serves as a wakeup call for BT, because he is now firmly in the realm of "live long enough to become the villain."
Trotz getting a wake up call? I don't think he thinks he has made any mistakes! He IS Barry Fricken Trotz and he will do whatever he wants!

He probably just didn't want Schenn in Winnipeg. Like we have to worry about dumb things like that since a) we're not playing Winnipeg, and b) even if we were it would actually HELP us against them if Schenn was playing for them. That or he just thought it would be really mean to send Schenn to some frozen wasteland or something. And he probably does believe considerations like those ARE worth more than a lousy 2nd round pick.

Any updates on Josi?

I know he was “week to week” but to I feel like his injury might be worse than that?

Trotz basically said today that he either likes you or he doesn't. If he doesn't he wants to move you out and doesn't really care about value. If he likes you he will give you chance after chance until you finally succeed. He didn't really explain how folks got assigned to like/not like status.

Hope you’re all ready for another season of Brunette behind the bench……

Glad I already told them I wouldn't be renewing my tickets because Trotz is an idiot.

What a f***ing idiot.

Honest question. If you’re the agent of a player that’s in the NCAA, are you letting your player sign with the Predators or are you advising them to play out there college career and then becoming an UFA?

Based on Trotz's comments about Duchene and Ekholm him disliking you means you probably have talent.

Depends. Do you think Trotz will like your client?

Ain't no way in hell I'm telling my client not to finish out his career and choose his own location if he is drafted by the Preds. Yeah you might not make it anyways but I'd rather make it on my own merit rather than whether some old, bald, no neck having GM likes me or not. Especially when I don't even know what like means in this case. Duchene already proved it has nothing to do with production.

IF Trotz did what he says it would be an entirely different situation. The plan that he talks about is not a bad plan. The problem is he’s NOT doing what he says and his coach is not acting on the plan. Trotz’s words sound similar to what Dallas does with their veterans and young players. His actions and those of his coach are not falling in line with the spoken plan.

The Preds have not had any long term seasons of sucking. It may be our time. Like the Buffalo's, San Jose, Detroit's, and now Chicago, the Preds have enjoyed good and fair seasons. No SC's like Detroit or Chicago but good seasons. Now look at those teams, they have been bad for many seasons now and Buffalo for a long time. The Preds have always been basically pretty steady as a team and a Org. But since the switch in GM, BT has gone in a different way with how he will run the team. The results have not been good. If not for a 18 game points streak last year, this team would have had two of its worst seasons since the beginning. GMBT keeps saying that the Preds are close and keeps shipping out some of its drafted young players for basically nothing and signing older vets that are on the back end of their careers. ALL in the name of "Culture". BT as the Preds Coach never got past the Conf Semi-Finals with Players like Paul Kariya, Jason Arnott, JP DuMont, Weber, Suter, Steve Sullivan AND Peter Forsberg. HCBT was a good Coach, not great. he won a SC with a loaded Washington team. Yes he was loved in Nashville as the HC, but he, so far, has not shown he knows how to be a good GM. If things do not change, we can expect to become like those teams mentioned and become bottom feeders. Nashville has always had a hard time getting top talent for whatever reason. If they stay this course this can/will make that much more difficult. I am not sure the fans will want to pay/watch a bottom feeder team for very long. Also not sure how long the current/new Owner(s) will allow this to continue.

so I just logged back in after the site took a crap on deadline day. Not feeling optimistic about our future as I was before. Just glad we got a 2nd for Nyquist at least.
Think it's funny that Stamkos got hot at the absolute worst time, just our luck. Ready to pick 8th after this year of sucking :eyeroll:

Something to be said about player development versus drafting:

The Panthers have developed more legit NHL-talent during the last few years than we have, despite that they've made deep playoff runs the last two years and haven't drafted in the first round since 2021.

- Mackie Samoskevich

Stars, ditto.

- Lian Bischel
- Wyatt Johnston
- Logan Stankoven

Canes:

- Jackson Blake
- Scott Morrow

This organization just doesn't have a single clue about player development. It's like every player we churn out looks promising to start but after a year or two at maximum, they start to disappear and stagnate in terms of development. We're not giving them proper chances to excel in the NHL-level. The above organisations do.

I get the sentiment but this is the wrong team to use as a framework. They had 3 guys on the Cup winning roster that they drafted and developed. Shrewd acquisitions with a couple of high picks (Barkov & Ekblad) that they kept is how they built their roster. To pick up Tkachuk, Reinhart and Bennett via trade was brilliant followed by adding others in FA is truly a master class in building a roster by Zito.

Vegas is another recent example except they used what they had to acquire their top end talent or picked up via FA.

Both teams had the necessary pieces to go after the big fish. Remember when we were like, we're not giving up Tolvanen for Stone, management and the fanbase both overvalued our prospects. Do you think Vegas cares what they gave up to get Eichel? What about what Florida gave up to get Tkachuk? Both teams achieved their end goal, a Cup and their both poised to make runs again this year.

While Dallas is an interesting example, they haven't won the Cup in quite some time and while they've been able to identify, draft and develop some really good players, it hasn't gotten them over the hump. I'm quite jealous of their drafting. We picked Tolvanen and a few picks later they selected Robertson.

Maybe our scouts need to go? Maybe our management team needs to go? When you have Scott Nichol as your director of player development and guys turn in to 4th line grinders, you may have a problem.

Biggest issue I've always had with the organization whether it was Poile, Trotz, Lavi, Hynes, or Brunette is the double standard. They always tell us guys need to earn it or play the right way and yet we bring vets in, they do exactly the same thing but it's the young guy getting benched, busted down the lineup, or moved.

They always tell us there is a growing period with young guys, that we are going to need to let them play through their mistakes, but unless they haven't had a choice they never have.

Same thing goes with a player like Duchene. Trotz tells everyone he didn't want guys on retirement contracts then goes and hands out retirement contracts but it's different with these guys.

Nichol as development coach is kind of the same thing. You want to produce guys with talent but the guy you have in charge of talent didn't have a lick of it himself.

We sign guys for multi-year deals then trade or waive them. Well if you didn't like them why didn't you trade them when they weren't saddled with these deals and might have had better value? Just about every move Trotz has made has cost us assets. Whether that was Glass, Schenn/Novak, Fabbro, etc. He either gave up or lost assets because of one reason or another.

We don't really give young guys real shots though. Not sure what the other organizations have done but I doubt it is close to what we have done here.

10-13 mins a night with tweeners, other young unproven players, or bottom of the lineup grinders. When they don't excel, management acts shocked. If they do get a shot in the top 6, first sign of an issue and they're demoted. It is as if the staff is just looking for a reason to put them back into the bottom 6.

Meanwhile, our top 6 can spend over half the season skating with zero urgency, make stupid turnovers left and right, and blow defensive coverage with no threat of demotion. Our bottom line was complete dog turds for the first chunk of the season giving up goals left and right. It took weeks for McCarron to get a game off
