It is good in the long term that we lost these five to be sure Trotz doesn't get any stupid ideas about contending. I hope this is the final nail in Bruno's coffin too, though I doubt we fire him in season.

I don't see how this team, barring massive changes for GM, Coach, and/or roster, is a playoff team before 2028.

We can be a playoff team with a coaching change pretty easily next year, IF everything plays out right. Our roster isn't totally off of where it was when we last made it. Now, the question is if we'd have a big enough change to do some actual damage.

Only one way to find out: Bruno has to be let go.

Regardless I don't see us making the playoffs for the next two years at minimum

One of two things needs to happen with Skjei. They either need to trade him or find a coach that plays man defense. He was good in Carolina playing man. Whatever the heck this defense is that Brunette runs is something that Skjei just can’t figure out. That contract is gonna suck for a lot of years if they can’t figure out a system he can function in.

On paper, this was a playoff team. The age factor of our FA signings were supposed to start to debilitate us in 2-3 years. But not this year.
This roster isn’t full of Bobby Butlers and Brandon Yips of 2013. This team should not be this inept at scoring goals or having so many defensive breakdowns but here we are.
The system stinks and it’s on coaching. I get it can take time to integrate a system but we are 52 games and I have to wonder what’s going on in practice that produces this trash in a game

Ugh I forgot about him for a minute.

Coaching and system are a huge issue and poor fit for the current roster. But we also still need to address the two holes this roster went into the season with: a 2nd (or even better, 1st) line center--maybe the draft will alleviate that--and at least one top 4 d-man. The fill in D have been better than expected but it is still a weak group overall, especially with the wheels seemingly falling off the Josi-bus

Well... a back to back is next and it is the "easiest" games we have for a minute. Chicago/Buffalo, 2 week break, COL/NJD, FLA, WPG, NYI/NYR, BOS, SEA, CHI in the 2 weeks after the break. 2 back to backs against respectable teams and no real reprieve in matchup strength until the end.

I fully expect this team to be completely out of the playoff contention by the end of that run. Realistically, we already are... we need more points in our final 30 games then we got in the first 52 games

I think we're seeing with this brutal stretch we're having just how bad our defense truly is. Josi is aging, Skjei's not been a fit, Barron's still very raw, Schenn's over the hill, Blankenburg's not a top-four D by any stretch and while Wilsby has been a pleasant surprise, I'm not 100% convinced he's the solution either.

What we need is guys like Marcus Pettersson, who can log in +20 minutes a night without being a defensive liability. While the blankenburgs and the wilsbys are nice stories, you need some toughness and size to go with that skating ability. If Schenn's supposed to be our defensive anchor, we're exactly where we should be - bottom-three team in the league.

I have to admit I REALLY like Wilsby and Stastney. Like, the same way I really liked Fabbro. I don't know if I should be mad at everybody who isn't watching the Admirals and wasn't telling me these guys were THAT good... or that they actually aren't that good - and it just helps illustrate how BAD all the rest of our D have been lately? :dunno:

Anyway, Lauzon and Schenn are absolute boat anchors. Blankenburg tries, kudos to him, but I still say he's not an NHL player. Barron is hit and miss. I always defend Josi around here, but frankly if I could step back, he has been pretty brutal outside of sucking up the offensive opportunities he has a complete green light to take advantage of. Skjei just doesn't seem to know how to play for this team... he's all over the place, and I can see where folks talk about him having success in the Carolina system but just not being able to fit into whatever it is that we're doing.

We really need to just punt Lauzon and Schenn into the sun, send Blankenburg back to Milwaukee, and slot Barron a lot further back in the rotation while he learns to level out his game. Even with that, this D is still 2 good players away from being competitive. :(

I, too, like Wilsby and Statsney - to some degree. But there's a clear reason they're making their NHL debuts as 24 or 25 year-olds. It's not just because of overcooking.

They're both really good skaters, but Anders Athanasiou would've been a top-five player in the league if it was just up to that. Especially for defensemen, it isn't.

We're constantly getting beat in front of our own net, and it's because our defensemen are either undersized and can't protect that area of the ice or they're too slow and defensively inept to do it.

In my opinion, unless something drastically changes in personnel, the defense is going to look bad under Brunette for at least the next three years. After that I’d imagine it’ll be Molendyk, Gibson, Stastney, Wilsby and Skjei plus a larger bodied veteran that Trotz picks up along the way.

There is this... for all I like Fabbro, Wilsby, Stastney for their skating... you probably can't have 3 of those guys on the same team. You do need bruisers who are going to drop the hammer in front of the goalie. (And not like Lauzon who does it everywhere else on the ice EXCEPT in front of Saros).

Well, you basically need "complementary pairings", which seem to be out the window for us lately. We are just slapping band-aids and running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Hinostrosza on waivers. Honestly don’t care if he is claimed. He isn’t legit nhl player.
Honestly, if it wasn't for the fact I also want Milwaukee to be a powerhouse, I'd wish for another team to claim him, just to take the option out of Trotz's hands.

Blankenburg can go the same way afaic.

We aren't going to get better for the future by putting these guys on the ice. I hope this signals some recognition of that fact from the front office. (I am not holding my breath.)
