Ned deserves another start Friday, get to 3-0 and let Petr go Sunday afternoon.

Listening to Rod on the presser on the way home, he kinda alluded that it is Ned's to lose. Talk about balancing out through the season to not overwork guys, so that when playoffs come, whoever has the hot hand can continue. (large paraphrasing on my part)

Weird game with all the penalties, but... my observations:

Seemed like Staal put on Skjei's jersey last night. Brady was outstanding, probably his best game as a Cane. Played like a Selke-worthy forward and Top pairing D all in one game.
Other than Aho on offense, it seemed no one else (maybe Lorentz?) stood out on offense, which I don't actually mind because I also don't recall anyone really stinking it up either, so an all around solid, team performance. Pesce was solid on D as usual, and Bean and Hakanpaa were noticeably good.
So, the notion that we have one of the deepest D-cores in the league played out last night. Encouraging.
With a 2-0 lead, do we err on the side of caution and rest Slavin again? If we get last night Sjkei, I'd say yes. Anything less, maybe not.

If you get to 3-0, you let Ned keep playing. I'm still a big Petr fan and don't know for certain what Ned's future holds, but it'd be really dumb to take him out at that point. It won't be shocking if Petr gets some time in net during these playoffs but there's no need to force it.

i agree

Petr should have a chance to start to keep him sharp.

Slavin should sit until absolutely necessary. Game 3 without him will stink because we control the matchups less but, Bean and Gardiner/Ryan are going to have to step up. Ryan may be the better option in Game 3. Lajoie is the best option but he didnt get any NHL time so i know he has about zero chance at being put in.

No one was in rhythm because the penalties kept us from generating any.

This

I'm not going to lie, this officiating in this series is a f***ing joke right now. The fact they called McGinn for diving in the first game and then allowed every amateur hour flop that Nashville pulled off last night to work, we are very fortunate that its not seriously impacting this series. I am worried that its only going to get worse in Nashville, which is hard to believe after the shitshow we watched last night.

Don't Worry they will find a Way.. NHL refs are good at that. Not so good at calling a game..

Glad we got past this one. Hope we aren't building a reputation as 'undisciplined'

The PK hierarchy goes Slavin, Pesce, Skjei, and Hakanpaa.

The hierarchy has Pesce first. CanesCountry did an analysis after last season and Pesce/Edmundson predominantly took the ice first. This year it has been Pesce/Skjei. (See below)

The best ways to counter this are to get the pass through when the defender goes for it, or successfully fake the pass to get them out of position. Once more teams start doing these things, you'll see the aggressive PK take a bit of a step back.

I have no doubt teams have prepared tactics to counter the aggressiveness of the Canes' kill. However, that is why I think Aho's particular talent (and his ability to partner with TT or Necas) is so important. He actually is the one initiating the fakes--Aho seems to alternate between attacking the puck-carrier deep with waiting for the puck to get to or just beyond the blue line. Sometimes he takes an almost traditional checking attitude and other times he slides behind the puck anticipating the "slingshot" maneuver. With the additional element of the psychic connection with Teravainen, it will be hard to fully counter the Canes' aggressiveness when Aho is on the ice.

Necas has shown some of the same skills. But there really isn't a partner for him if Aho/TT are one of the forward units on the PK. While it will never happen, if the coaches could become comfortable with Hakanpaa and Hamilton (or Bean for that matter) as a D unit behind Pesce/Skjei, I truly believe Slavin could be an ideal partner for Necas. With Slavin's skating and unequalled ability to get his stick on passes, he and Necas might be able to be even more disruptive than Aho/TT.

I'm guessing this took a lot of work to convince the old school coaches because while the chance of a SH goal goes up (clearly more if teams are doing this) the chance of a PP goal goes up a little as well unless you are an elite PK.

Old school theory was "get through the 2 minutes without giving up a goal." It takes a change in thinking to realize it's ok to be more aggressive if you score more goals this way in the long run than the additional goals you give up.

The best ways to counter this are to get the pass through when the defender goes for it, or successfully fake the pass to get them out of position. Once more teams start doing these things, you'll see the aggressive PK take a bit of a step back.

It helps to have a group of players that’s man-for-man better than the PP they’re facing. Aho is a lot better than any Pred forward, and better than any skater other than Josi. TT, Staal, even Necas aren’t far off.

One thing the organization has done very well in recent years is decide the kind of game they want to play, and acquire the right group of players to execute that plan. Most teams could not play our PK system successfully, because they wouldn’t be converting those turnovers into scoring chances and they wouldn’t be getting Slavin/Pesce level support when things break down. We can play this style because we have the personnel to do it... that’s a huge credit to the players, and also to the front office for putting the puzzle together in a very unorthodox way. Teams that try to copycat us will figure out quickly that it’s not as simple as changing the Xs and Os.

OUTSIDE OF SLAVIN'S QUESTIONABLE HEALTH, I HAVE ONE GRIPE. I CAN'T FIND HIGHLIGHTS THAT CONTAIN HITS. THERE WERE SOME NICE (AND ACTUALLY CLEAN) HITS AND I CAN'T FIND THEM.
That’s because of CTE, and concerns over lawsuits, leagues have gone away from glorifying hits in highlights. For example, ESPN (I think it was ESPN) used to have that NFL segment called “jacked up” where all the highlights were big hits and they did away with it.

i love the outcomes so far, but since i beat this drum in the series with the caps in '19 i will say once again that a series doesn't start until someone loses on home ice or game 7 - whichever comes first. so let's get the series started friday night.

unless he really feels better, i'd sit slavin in game 3 (and if that is a win, again in game 4).

as i said a couple weeks back, and i'm a huge fan of mrazek, if petr doesn't play a single game in the playoffs i'm elated because there is only one situation where i can see that happening. dude is still a big part of us being where we are (as is reimer with his mighty goalie-wins total).

I'd say that I think Rod developed this style of play for the team he had in place, then the front office further amended the roster to fit into that style. I don't think Rod would have tried this with say, the 2014 roster.

But being able to match a style to the roster in place is a refreshing change after Bill "Get me better players" Peters.

I approve of all Haula heckling last night-- Sincerely, a Former Haula apologist.

In all seriousness, I never minded that kind of criticizing of his on ice-theatrics anyway. He's given us plenty of "low hanging fruit" to work with now lol.

Criticizing the on-ice theatrics was never the issue.
