high probability one of Mario, or Stevie Y having injury problems... if Pittsburgh is in playoff contention come Olympic time there is NO WAY Mario should be going to the Olympics, but that is just my opinion.

Russia

Kovalchuk Fedorov Mogilny
Ovechkin Datsyuk Kovalev
Kharitonov Kozlov Afinogenov
Kozlov Malkin Semin

Add the rest:)Defence is weak as usual so fill it out. Awesome if the Wall, Feds Slava Kozlov and Mogilny play. Which is very doubtful.

I doubt Mogilny will be there.I can't remember the last time he accepted an invitation to play For Russia in International hockey,i think it may have been for their Junior team as the old Soviet Republic in Alaska circa 1989.For some reason he seems to have a resentment on for the Russian hockey federation.

his list leaves out yashin also,i'm sure he'll be named.

Russia's top line and defensive pair have already been set :

Kharitonov - Datsyuk - Sushinsky
Kulyash - A. Markov

See, this is why the US isn't going anywhere. This lineup could very easily be a realistic team, but it isn't going to win.

You have to eliminate Derian Hatcher, Doug Weight, and maybe even Modano if he doesn't perform. Over the hill centers aren't going to perform well enough to help the US defeat Canada.

My team USA:

Tkachuk-Gomez-Guerin
Knuble-Drury-Malone
Pandolfo-Rolston-Konowalchuk
Parrish-Parise-Gionta
extra: Halpern

Rafalski-Martin
Liles-Leopold
Miller-Berard
Extra: Suter

Esche
DiPietro

Problem is, the lineup you posted is the most likely to be fielded, it just isn't the best. Team USA needs to trust it's youth. I think my lineup both will score more goals and is gritty enough to take down Canada.

Highly doubt Khabibulin will. Hasn't since he played in the WJC when his coach took his medal.

In my mind, Gagne, Doan, Yzerman and Smyth are all on the bubble so to speak: each one could easily be replaced by whoever is hot at that time of the year. Yzerman should not be on this team no matter what!! One guy that could be added, if he has a great start to the year, is Sidney Crosby. Imagine a line of Lemieux/Crosby/Bertuzzi.....cool!

That was the Lillehammer Olympics, actually. Khabby was the 3rd goalie and never played a game, so Victor Tikhanov saw fit to take his gold medal. Classy....

well... i've read that there is a feeling that they are going to keep the Gagne-Thornton-Nash line together after they dominated at the WC's this year.

why is Gagne always on the bubble when he keeps getting selected and then playing significant minutes for team Canada? guy gets zero respect...

1. Gretzky likes Gagne.
2. Gagne is uber flexible in terms of role.
3. his linemates have been: Sakic/Iginla and Thornton/Nash... played with the TB boys some during the World Cup, right? doesn't seem like someone on the bubble based on that.

Gagne is definitely not on the bubble. He is the most underrated forward in the NHL as far as I'm concerned. And when he plays for his country, it's double what he does in the NHL. He may not contribute much offensively, but the way he sees the ice, and his abilities defensively are a must. He's a lock IMO for Team Canada.

Khabibulin = named top goalie at 2002 Olympics. ;)

Oh and the thing with the medal happened at the 1992 Olympics. He received his medal in 2002 though.
