Name a team with worse asset management than COL.

Colarado went from having one of the most rich and deepest pool of players in Kadri, Rantanen, and Bowen Byram, to cheap depth pieces.

- The AVS chose to not re-sign Nazem Kadri as their #2C for 7 Million.
- Than, they traded a #1/2D in Bowen Byram for 6$ Million #2C Casey Middlestadt
- Now, they didn't want to pay Rantanen an extra 500k per year, and, instead traded him for Martin Necas.

It seems like the AVS front office thought they were playing 4D Chess by nickle and diming their core pieces in Kadri, Rantanen, and, managing the asset in Bowen Byram.

This has to be one of the most negligent waste of assets in recent history. Name a worse display of asset management.

Ottawa has been terrible since 2017, but I wouldn't consider them the "worst" because their goal wasn't the same as most winning teams.

First it was to cut payroll, then it was to try overpay for low-salary half measures in hopes they could win and stop the bleeding of low ticket sales (Stepan, etc), then it was a mix of Dorion trying to "win now" without regard for the future because his job was both to polish up the franchise for a sale and market himself as a competent GM for when the new ownership inevitably brought in their own guys. (Chychrun, Debrincat, offering Tarasenko and Korpisalo long-term deals, etc).

Even going back to the Duchene trade, I think that Dorion knew that their window to win was based around Karlsson/Stone/Hoffman's RFA deals. So I think that there was more urgency than with any normal team, which Sakic took advantage of.

As an oiler fan--we are the KINGS of wrong asset management

The Pierre Dorion trades for Debrincat and Chychrun were pretty bad. Basically cleared out Ottawa's draft picks for two guys that were on the team for a season.

Dorion destroyed our team, but his allegiance was to himself and the Melnyk ownership group who were trying to extort top value in a sale after they destroyed the season ticket base.

I could be wrong and maybe he would make those trades even if his job was secure, but it seems to me like he knew his days were numbered so those draft picks meant nothing to him. He was never going to see any benefit from using them.

I think his goal was to win now both to make himself look as competent as possible, and to fulfill his obligations to the ownership group (sell more season tickets, polish up the franchise for sale). I don't think his goal from the point Melnyk passed away was to run the franchise in a prudent way to ensure that the GM who takes his job is in a position to succeed a few years down the line.

Those two trades set us back so much. People forget how much we gave up for Chychrun because you also have to consider what we paid to dump Zaitsev to facilitate the trade. We gave up the 12th overall, three high 2nd round picks, and a 4th. That's absurd.

The Sabres exist.

Jim Benning traded 29 draft picks in 7 years
he brought in 12
Nobody compares to Jim Benning in asset management
he gave 2nd round picks in damn near every frigan trade, its like he was leaving a tip at a restaurant
"here have a 2nd round pick"

To put this into perspective
jim Benning said and I quote
"Nobody likes draft picks more than me in this league"

Sakic took advantage of OTT.

Drafted Bowen Byram 4th OVRL.
Just to trade Byram for Middlestadt, who was a complete failure, and they traded Middlestadt + 2nd rd pick for 33 YO Charlie Coyle rental.

Trotz is doing his best to keep up. Colorado has a wide open Cup window and two of the 5 best players on the planet at the height of their powers, so I don’t think their asset management has been egregiously bad aside from the Rantanen situation.

How is the window wide open? Right now it’s barely open but open still

No picks in -25 or -26 draft, no top prospects, no 2C, not that much cap flexibility

They literally don’t have any picks in the 1st 3 rounds of the next 2 drafts. How is that not bad asset management

They traded Byram, top prospect, a 1st trying to addres their 2C and most likely will have nothing to show for it

Chris Johnston just today said they were 0.25M apart before Avs traded Rantanen. Just pay the man 12.5M and be done with it

Two things aren't mutually exclusive.

If Ottawa collapses a week or two sooner, Sakic probably gets a package from a different team that is a lot closer to what Ottawa got from Columbus.

Sakic mishandled the Duchene trade and got lucky. He had a strong offer from Ottawa in 2016 (Zib+Chabot), and turned it down. Then he held him for so long that the market collapsed as it usually does with disgruntled players. Dorion bailed him out big time. I suspect the #2 best offer at that time as nowhere close to what he got.

Dorion's public version of events is that the 2017 collapse is what caused the Sens rebuild, but I've always suspected that whether formally or informally, he knew a rebuild was coming by 2019 because he had access to capfriendly and could do basic math to figure out that Karlsson, Stone, and other stars would price themselves out of Ottawa's budget. I think that the Duchene trade was part desperation to try and "win now" before that happened.

It wouldn't shock me if he viewed it like he wasn't trading Turris at the deadline because they were going to shoot for the playoffs, so Turris was a sunk cost, and he could flip Duchene when the rebuild starts for a 1st+++, so the cost of renting Duchene would have been minimal.

SERIOUSLY??????????????????????

Gotta be the Rangers. They've been plagued with young talent either being traded away or asking for a trade. Going back AT LEAST 10 years.

I thought they were going to dominate the league 5 years ago. One cup for Makar/McKinnon might be looked back on as disappointing all things considered.

Avs have won a Cup in recent years and will be once again contenders next season. Rantanen getting a hatty was the worst thing that coulda happened to the Avs to end their season.

There are waaaaay more teams that made a lot worse decisions that the Avs. I love the deal for the Avs that landed them Necas in that trade. He is an absolute stud.

Also, giving Kadri that contract would have been an awful decision long term and Byram isn’t remotely close to being a top pairing dman

Avs will be one of the favorites to win next year once again
