My Ranger Playoff Report Card

Panarin - C-
Zibanejad - D
Kreider - C
Trocheck - A
Chytil - N/A
Goodrow - A-
Lafreniere - A

Rempe - C
Vesey - D
Brodzinski - N/A
Cuylle - D+ (Was he injured all playoffs? Totally different player in the playoffs than the regular season, really thought his physical style would be great in the playoffs).
Kakko - D
Roslovic - C
Wennberg - D
Wheeler - N/A
Fox - B (The injury clearly hindered him greatly so I'm not going to give him anything below average, ESPN loved to let us know 500 times the last time he scored a goal too in the playoffs, morons).
Trouba - F
Miller - C+
Lindgren - C
Schneider - B
Gustafsson - D
Shesterkin - A

Really sad that so many players ended up play so below average, not many B's in my ranking. Of course the ECF was weighted more heavily than the Caps/Canes series.

I'm looking at this a bit differently: Which of these players/staff would you be disappointed if they were NOT back next season?

Laf
Fox
Shesty
Trochek
Panarin
Laviolette
Peca
Alarie

Das It and Das All. FWIW I think both Kreider and Zibs are finished as top line players. Kreider is a 'hockey old' 33 and Zibs just suffered way too much damage from the concussions and broken bones such that has competitive fire has been completely sapped; like to the point where if Lavi had said to him, 'We're replacing you on the top line and PP1 with Ryder Korczak' he would have just said 'OK, coach.', and slouched off to his locker.

Chris Kreider - A

If you expected more out of him, I don't know what to say anymore. He's not an elite gamebreaking winger and we put those expectations on him because the team is mid. He won a series like he were that tho, and we should just say thanks, not wonder why he doesn't do it every series. He saved you from having to live with a reserve sweep for the rest of your life.

Mika Zibanejad - F

If I have to explain this you don't get it.

Jack Roslovic - C-

He certainly exists.

Artemi Panarin - C-

Fine but needs to be a lot more than fine.

Vincent Trocheck - A

You saw it. Needs no explanation.

Alexis Lafreniere - A

See Trocheck.

Will Cuylle - D

Dude is a massive nothing.

Alex Wennberg - F

Don't care what else he does, he's not an NHL player in the offensive zone.

Kaapo Kakko - F

See Wennberg

Filip Chytil - Inc.

Did nothing but it's not a fair assessment at this time.

Barclay Goodrow - B

Still sucks tbh but did some huge stuff in spots.

Matt Rempe - Inc

He plays two shifts a game.

Jimmy Vesey - F

Good RS player. Second straight year he's was unplayable in the playoffs. He can't pass at all and it kills him when things get tight.

Adam Fox - A-

I don't wanna hear it. He played two rounds on a significant injury and in the minutes he played and Lindgren didn't, the Rangers were Team Canada.

Ryan Lindgren - F

If you have him any higher, take 60 days off the board and assess your life.

Jacob Trouba - F

See Lindgren.

K’Andre Miller - D

Kind of over him tbh.

Erik Gustafsson - C

He's fine.

Braden Schneider - B-

He absolutely sucked ass against Florida but he was good the first two rounds and I'm willing to chalk it up to inexperience. I'm not mad at him.

Igor Shesterkin - A

I mean, yeah.

Chis Drury get a fat D grade too.

Alex "Warm Body" Wennberg for a 2nd and a 4th (from the Nils Lundqvist trade)
Jack "Useless & Allergic of Contact" Roslovic for a 4th (conditions for 3rd were the cup finals)
Chad "5 games" Ruhwedel for a 4th

that's just from this TDL. The only reason he doesn't get an F is because he only traded draft picks, keeping our prospect but it's a D because he went and spent those assets on pure garbage.

Miller was better the first half of the playoffs... because he was away from Trouba. Trouba demonstrably makes Miller worse.

Trouba doesn't force Miller to give the puck away over and over again as if he's doing in on purpose. He reminds me of Karpovtsev whose one play was to ring the puck around the boards.

Mika Zibanejad: F - When a player can only do one thing and that thing no longer works, he is a waste of space. I question his commitment to winning a cup. He is too talented to play so soft and disinterested. I don't think he wants to be a professional Hockey player nor does he give a shit about being on this team. I want to get rid of him. At this point his presence blocks Lafreniere from PP1.

Artemi Panarin: C- The book is that the moment it gets physical he cannot rise to the challenge. In spite of that I think he is a great player and necessary for the regular season.

Chris Kreider: C - The third of our big guns also suffers a little Mika Zibanijitis. He flashes great play and physicality but when the going gets tough he defers. Magnificent performance against the Canes in game six. Otherwise he gets an F too.

Alexis Lafreniere: A He is breaking out and I feel that if he has another great offseason and is given PP1 mins instead of Mika he will explode. Is finally playing physical and his offensive hockey IQ seems restored from minors. Still needs to work on his awareness in the defensive zone but when his confidence is high he is unstoppable. Which is why I feel he should be put in position to perch up that confidence by getting PP points. It's time. You can't stop a kid like this from succeeding forever.

Vincent Trochek: A He is a complete center. Nothing more can be said about him in that he is great for Laffreniere and Panarin.

Jack Roslovic: C- You can see the talent but he is a very stupid player. He is limited in his offensive IQ and we can do better.

Alex Wennberg C- I was promised a gamer and a defensive rock. He was neither. Goodbye

Will Cuyle: C I can see the phisicality and the shot, has a long way to go to develop his offense. Good piece to have for the future. He looks like a center to me. Looks like a center playing wing.

Filip Chytil. INC I see the talent but let's face it, he is cooked. Once you get that many concusions its over. He is done.

Kappo Kakko C- Very frustrating player to watch, you see his puck handling skills, he is a possession monster, but he plays with no confidence. I still think there is more in him even though I doubt he will ever live up to 2OA status. But there is a decent second liner in there somewhere if he is able to play a full season.

Barclay Goodrow: A Played a magnificent playoffs. Horrid regular season.

Matt Rempe: C Just having him on the ice is a deterrant but in the Florida series was not influential.

Mike Brodzinski: INC I don't care and goodbye.

Jimmy Vesey: INC We missed him in this series.

Adam Fox: B- He is injured and was unable to move around side to side too much, I say either a rib injury or a foot injury.

Ryan Lindgren: C Man I can't get down on him for how much he has sacrificed his body but it is starting to affect his play. He can barely move sometimes and when both he and Fox are injured they look atrocious.

Jacob Trouba: F - I have no idea how this man is our captain. He is the worst signing in Rangers history, or one of them. Just dead money sitting there. He can't skate. He kills all rushes. And he misses all hits when he doesn't decapitate someone. He reminds me of a slightly more talented Garnett Exelby. His worst crime is he is a detriment to K'Andre Miller. He makes him play nervous.

K'Andre Miller: C He took a step back this year. You see the talent but I think playing with Trouba makes him get constantly out of position. His biggest problems are clearing the puck and turning it over in his own zone. This happens a lot more with Trouba than with Schneider.

Braden Schneider: B- I think he took a step forward, more like a leap, during the second half of the regular season. His partner should be Miller, they seem to play well together. I think he slowed down in this series but I was concerned with him last offseason. Not anymore.

Erik Gustaffson: C- It doesn't matter. Goodbye. I hope he doesnt block Jones any longer.

Igor Shesterkin: A- He looks more talented, or more athletic, than Hank. But he is no Hank. He is a hair below. Despite that he is the reason we made itas far as we did. I think he had an off year for what he is. Let in some softies but also saved us from sure things. Its weird. As long as hes here our window will be open.

Trouba doesn't force Miller to give the puck away over and over again as if he's doing in on purpose. He reminds me of Karpovtsev whose one play was to ring the puck around the boards.

Miller/Schneider performed worse/about the same than Miller/Trouba in both the regular season and the playoffs. I really don't get this narrative. Well I know why it is. It's because Schneider is a young home grown former first round pick and Trouba is an overpaid player acquired via trade.

Outstanding: Laf. Igor Trocheck Goodrow. and Kreider

"OK but expected more" Bread, Lav.

Incomplete: Phil, Fox, Rempe

Meh: Gustav, All deadline acquisitions and therefore Drury

Lindgren: does nothing offensively and is too small to be what he is

Miller is like a shell of himself (remember the Penguins series?) alarming

Trouba - almost couldn't be worse

KK - not an NHL player currently

Vesey - Important to keep

If we want to be technical about it, Gus was the Ranger D with the most giveaways in the playoffs. Schneider had the most giveaways in the defensive zone and had the worst giveaway/takeaway ratio. Panthers actually lead all teams in the playoffs in defensive zone giveaways. :)

I don't get your narrative. I wasn't commenting on either Trouba or Schneider there. I'm commenting on what a horrid defenseman I think Miller is.

I sincerely apologize for hitting quote on your post instead of the person you were responding to. A glaring error on my part.

Someone who has played hockey at any significant level can comment here, but from a tactical standpoint, considering the Rangers were playing a hybrid system and were being totally beat out to every battle in the defensive zone when they went for man-to-man coverage, what is so difficult about changing to a fully zone system?

Wouldn't the zone coverage to keep shots to the outside and a different set up to slow Florida through neutral zone have been a better play here?

These guys are pros...they should be able to make that adjustment without a major issue. Maybe it means being more mindful of habits and how certain plays are structured, but I don't see why Lavi didn't make that change.

Florida would dump it and hammer whoever was retrieving the puck. They got caught with crappy gap control, bad turnovers, over-committing (Trouba...), and left the create open too often while chasing someone.

Felt like Lavi was trusting them to work it out.

The injury to Vesey f***ed up the the 4th line. Maybe that doesn't seem all that important but it impacted pretty much every line but Trocheck's. Then we had forwards coming into and out of the lineup....none of whom played particularly well. I had doubts about the readiness of both Chytil and Wheeler after missing so much time.

To me Florida was really the team most built for the playoffs of any this year. To me the winner of our series with them were likely going to be the SC champs.

Our defense had an issue with the pressure and physical play of the the Panthers forecheck. Several of our forwards were too soft to be much help. The difference between the Panthers top large center Barkov and Zibanejad was pretty much apparent throughout the series. It was like Messier vs. Bernie Nicholls.

Rangers need to learn from this. The further growth though of guys like Cuylle and Rempe should make us a much harder team to play against.

Right off though there are guys who I would not re-sign and it's pretty much begins with anyone from the current team who is still listed as UFA. So Wheeler, Roslovic, Wennberg, Gustafsson it's sayonara time. Wheeler will be 38 anyway. He's too f***ing old. Roslovic and Wennberg are too soft. Gustafssson's play had been slowing fading throughout the year.

We have some solutions from within---whether it's Rempe, Edstrom, Berard, Mancini (he really impressed in Hartford after he was signed and he's a big body who can really skate) so I don't think we necessarily need to go to town in free agency.
