My January List for the 2018 QMJHL Junior Draft

Hope you don't mind me posting here but found this read quite fascinating. I'm from the UK where the hockey (as a sport) and its infrastructure is quite different.

They players going into the QMJHL draft, I'm guessing they must be around 16, 17?

My very limited understanding of the CHL teams is that the players aren't paid much at all, so what determines them going to a team as opposed to college. I read in the OP about teams making big offers to lure them, but how is that possible? Sorry to dumb down the conversation; just interested in this idea of scouting draft players. You can DM me if it's too off-topic.

QMJHL draft is for 15 and 16 year old players.

CHL players do not get paid, but receive a per deim.

NCAA offers a free ride to guys, but you will have to play at a lower level than the CHL prior to starting at the school you are committed to at 18/19/20. NHL draft begins in the second year of Junior eligibility for a majority of NHL prospects, thus guys who choose to go the NCAA route are playing their NHL draft season in a lesser league, and can often be overlooked unless they are a very good prospect.

QMJHL is considered a pro league by NCAA standards, so anyone who suits up for a QMJHL game or exhibition game lose their NCAA eligibility.

There are teams, such as London, Halifax, Quebec and Portland who constantly get guys who were "going" to NCAA, and get the top guys from Europe and QMJHL as well. It's been well known that some are lured by these teams, through means of promises, money, etc.

CHL is the best league for NHL exposure, no doubt about that. That plays a big factor.

Ah, thanks for that very interesting. Thanks for explaining, makes sense. We don't have a draft system here as you probably already know.

I'll keep an eye out on the draft and see how these players fare. Thanks again.

I would post this draft in the QMJHL section but hardly anyone goes on that board.

this is really a strong strong draft, each team will have a very different list from the next, from pick 6 on is pretty much going to be totally different for every team with guys in the 2nd round being able to fill in for 1st round. This is my version of how I like the players not giving away team scouting.

Players like Lawrence, DesRoches and Quillan are for sure going NCAA so they will not be picked unless a team like Halifax, Saint John, Moncton, Rimouski, Quebec throw some big things at the player. I have heard things about Mark Hillier, Ethan Landry, Brandon Walker and Alexander David going as well but until I speak to those guys (which will be after the season) I will not know for sure.

I see you have Chase Ellis and Ben Roode on an earlier list but excluded them on your lastest list. Both players had an excellent Ice Jam. Do you think they have slipped off the top prospects list?

Ellis and Roode well, I could possibly see Ellis going 2nd round, but I think he might fall to 3rd round...Roode I see going 3rd to 4th round...both have excellent potential, but both are under achieving and streaky guys. I find in Ellis he is no better than he was at the beginning of the year...Roode as well did not incline like I was hoping.

Wondering about kids from the Maritimes in rounds 3-6. What are your thoughts on that?

Also wondering your thoughts on New Bridge goalie Pearson.
He's my favorite 02 Maritime goalie. Good size. Love the way he plays the puck. Moves well, great positionning and recovery, always very patient and calm in net. From what I've seen, he seems very consistant.

NL and PEI in rounds 3 to 6, I think could include:
Kyle Lynch NL
Jordan Spence PEI
Alex Power NL
Brandon Casey NL
Lucas Park NL

I was definitely impressed with Jordan Spence in Jr. A this year, he definitely can play in the Q. Whether he wants too or not is another story though..

I would add Mark Hillier to that list, playing for St.Andrews College in Ontario.

Jordan Spence was for a surprise no draft last year in the Q, he even had a good showing at the Gatorade Challenge. He had a great year in Junior A this year. Best offensive season by a U-17 D in this league ever (by far) Eliteprospects.com - All-Time Stats and Leaders from MJAHL

I agree with Hillier. I didn't put him because the question was rounds 3 to 6. I'm thinking Hillier might go before the 3rd round.

Side thoughts, what players coming out of the Midget Espoir league intrigue you most in this upcoming draft?

It seems like goalscoring defencemen are lacking in the Q prospects this year. Anyone with goalscoring ability in this group?

Thanks, JMhockey. Anyone else with goal scoring ability on D? Villeneuve maybe?
