OT: Music discussion thread

A friend turned me on to Thou's Umbilical the other day and, after a couple of listens, I'm liking it. If you like sludge metal, you've probably already listened to it. I listen to a WIDE range of stuff, so this scratches a My War side two itch.

Man I remember listening to these guys ages ago, like 10ish years back or something. Great band.

People talk about Dave Grohl being the hardest working man in music. Well, I take exception. John Reis has been around about as long and released just as much music. I love everything this guy touches!

I'm making a playlist for the GF. She likes My Chemical Romance, Sleeping With Sirens, and Pierce the Veil. I want to drop some deep cuts on her.

The only MCR song I know is The Black Parade because of the Kings.

I don't want to get into the whole genre/ subgenre debate but regardless I'm not really into the stuff labeled "emo" from the 2000's on unless the band was active before then. The bands I consider emo started in the 80's and 90's. That said, I'm not a huge fan of "emo" in general but there are quite a few that I do like.

Texas is the Reason - pretty much all of it was good. Back and to the left, Jack with one eye and If it's here when we get back, it's ours - all three are classics imo.

Far - wear it so well, Love american style

Farside (fun fact: Zach De La Rocha played guitar for them before singing in Rage) - I Hope You're Unhappy, Seven Day constant, Page

Samiam - Capsized, Factory

Jawbreaker (the band that was supposed to be green day) - Jet Black, Boxcar

Hot Rod Circuit - Safely, the Pharmacist, Stateside

Rival Schools (Walter from Gorilla Biscuits / Quickand) - Travel by Telephone, Good Things

At The Drive in - Napoleon Solo, For now.. we toast, Lopsided

Sensefield (RIP Jon Bunch- Leia, Will, Building, Soft

Bands you should grab some track from that are big from that era are Jimmy Eat World (check Static Prevails and before - this is before they took off)

Sunny Day Real Estate ( bass player from Foo Fighters was in this band)

The Get Up Kids

Mineral - can't stand this band - very depressing music!

Unwound is a god-tier band, pretty much unmatched in their genre.

Further Seems Forever is a decent emo band with the caveat that they are a Christian Emo band. Their first album, The Moon is Down, has pre-Dashboard Confessional Chris Carrabba on vocals. Their 2nd album How to Start a Fire is maybe better than their 1st...

For specific songs, "Snowbirds and Townies" "The Sound" "On Legendary" and "Against My Better Judgment" are all solid.

A couple other bands are Thursday (the songs Understanding in a Car Crash, Standing on the Edge of Summer, Signals Over the Air, and War All of the Time) scratch that last song if you don't like political tunes.
The Beatiful Mistake has a handful of great songs, "On Building" and "Strike a Match" are my faves.

The Wonder Years; both "Lost it in the Lights" "Came Out Swinging" and "I Don't Like Who I Was Then" are favorites.

Also, I figure you know about AFI, but to quote my friend when he was drunk, "chicks dig AFI, this is known."

Unwound is a god-tier band, pretty much unmatched in their genre.

I saw them in 2001 opening for Cave In when Jupiter came out and they were great. I think I already mentioned in this thread but I love Cave In. I love the record Jupiter and just got the box set for the 30th anniversary. They are such an underappreciated band.

Jawbreaker, Minus The Bear, Texas is the Reason, Superchunk, Rival Schools (Walter Schreifels of GB/Quicksand), These Arms are Snakes and Burning Airlines.

Minus The Bear is one of my top ten bands of all time. I also love anything Walter touches and Rival Schools is awesome. I missed their show last year and was bummed.

Sparta would be a nice addition from that era.

Lastly, if you don't like ????? and ??? you're really missing out!!
