I just found this out recently and it kind of blew my mind...Neil Young and Rick "Super Freak" James in the same band????
The band was called "The Mynah Birds" Here's one of their songs.
No music here, it's just a short history of how this band came together.
From Wiki:
The Mynah Birds was a
Canadian R&B band formed in
Toronto,
Ontario, that was active from 1964 to 1967.
[1] Although the band never released an
album, it is notable as featuring a number of musicians, such as
Rick James and
Neil Young, who went on to have successful careers in
rock,
folk rockand
funk.
Over its short lifespan, the group featured many members in its many different configurations. Its most memorable lineup included Rick James, Neil Young,
Bruce Palmer, Rickman Mason and John Taylor. Rick James would later become a major funk star in the 1970s and 1980s. Young and Palmer went on to become two of the founding members in the popular West Coast folk rock group
Buffalo Springfield. After leaving Buffalo Springfield and
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Neil Young would go on to achieve fame as a solo artist.
[1][2] Goldy McJohn and
Nick St. Nicholas would later become members of the rock band
Steppenwolf.
An interview with Neil where he talks about the background musicians who contributed to major hits and are just as important to making the song a hit as the front man. A pretty good and informative interview.
And a little quip about how the failed "choreography school" as part of "The Mynah Birds" I guess they wanted him to dance in step with the rest of the band
At 13:36 he laughs at failing choreography class.
Again from Wiki, just a little insight on who "The Memphis Horns" were.
The Memphis Horns were an
American horn section, made famous by their many appearances on
Stax Records. The duo consists of
Wayne Jackson (November 24, 1941 – June 21, 2016) on
trumpet and
Andrew Love (November 21, 1941 - April 12, 2012) on
tenor saxophone. An "offshoot of the
Mar-Keys," they continued to work together for over 30 years.
[1] They lent their sound to 83 gold and platinum awards and over one-hundred high charting records, including
Otis Redding's "
Sitting On The Dock of the Bay,"
Al Green's "
Let's Stay Together," and
Elvis Presley's "
Suspicious Minds."
