Solid win. You'd need to be pretty damn miserable to find fault with this game

Very true.

If you followed the GDT it was all miserable. We were up 2-0 and comments were how this team is terrible, Bunting sucks and is malfunctioning and on and on... imagine how bad it got when the Pens scored two quick goals... Murray sucks Malgin sucks Keefe Sucks Kerfoot sucks Dubas sucks Marner sucks Matthews sucks Holl sucks Engvall sucks

nauseating.

Didnt result in a goal, Leafs scored another

Not relevant!
Not relevant last night.
3rd period of tied playoff game though.........

Those are the little mental errors that continue to plague this team when it matters most.

But overall good game last night.

Good road win. I wasn't too thrilled with our 2nd period TBH. It was way too sloppy and if not for Murr that 3 goal lead would have been gone by the end of 2. But on the flip side of that, it is really nice to see Murr back in the cage and kicking. He really held the fort down in that 2nd after those 2 quick goals. He was a rock start to finish. It has been a long time since we had a goalie play as large in the blue paint. He's got that Riemer/Giguere like ability to stay tall in his butterfly which allows him to save pucks he doesn't even see. Pucks just seem to hit him. He is also more athletic than Riemer and Giguere ever were so it allows him to make saves when he is out of position as well.

I oddly have a ton of confidence in Murr's ability to win us games, my only concern is his health.

I also liked the splitting up of Mitch and Auston. We need to see something different from our top 6. They'll be back together at some point, but for the time being they need a fresh look to get going.

Malgin continues to impress. Such a great addition to our lineup. He makes a difference almost every shift. That 4th line of ZAR - Kampf - Malgin has been absolutely dominating

all strengths nubers:

As much as I love the look of that line, I am actually curious how Malgin would do in the top 6. He's played with Auston in Zurich before, and he definitely has the skill to play in the top 6. He has been an absolute dog on pucks in the offensive zone. Very intelligent player. He knows how to extend plays and more importantly has the ability to extend them. I'ds really like to see something like this:

Bunting - Matthews - Malgin
Nylander - Tavares - Marner
Robertson - Kerfoot - Jarnkrok
ZAR - Kampf - XXXX

XXXX could be a rotation of Engvall, Simmonds, Holmberg, Steeves, Anderson...etc

Isolate Matty on his own line. Have the opposition really stew over what line to match. The best player, or the best line. If they key in on Matthews, that loaded "2nd line" can take advantage. If they key in on the 2nd line, it gives Matty more space to work. He's good enough to drive a line on his own, and I honestly think Malgin can get him the puck where he needs it.

Lastly, I think Engvall needs to hit the press box for a couple. He's been f***ing terrible all year. His defensive and neutral zone play is the sloppiest on the team right now, and it cannot continue IMO. He didn't have much of a camp, if any, so I can see why he's been behind the 8 ball. But we are well into the season now, he needs to be better. We've seen this uninspiring play from him in the past. He probably just needs yet another wakeup call. He has responded well to being healthied in the past, so I don't see why it would be any different this time around. I know how effective he can be, he's just terrible right now. Not saying Robby has earned a regular spot in the lineup, but he's certainly moved the needle more positively then Pierre at this point.

Don't think Malgin will be able to sustain his play against higher competition

Kampf is a workhorse. Love his game

That 4th line is really working hard and making a difference. Good blend of skill, grit and tenacity

I agree that bad or reckless decisions are far worse than a physical mistake. They happen, although that was pretty epic.

The play that bothered me even though it didn’t bite us was Benn going to the net on the two on one at the end of the shift on the PK. That could have blown up huge if the goalie doesn’t freeze the puck. The vets need to lead the way with game management.
Funny you mentioned about the Benn played. I know Benn scored two games ago, but I am really uncomfortable with the way Keefe is telling the Dman to pinch or join the attack all the time. I understand if it is Reilly or Gio or even Sandin but why is Benn parked in front of the net. And last night, look at the JT goal, you can see Benn was also pinching in while I think Reilly on the other side was looking at joining too. If JT lost the puck or the Pens blocked the shot, it is an odd man rush the other way.

You've underestimated at every step so far, so It's no shock you continue to do so. Despite the size, he's show a willingness to get physical, body people off the puck. He's had success at higher competition levels, so perhaps we ought to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Kampf has grown on me. I called him out few times but he has been exactly the bottom liner this team was lacking for along time

he was given top line role with both Tavares and Matthews this season and he couldn't handle the competition

Don't know about you but when I go into the corner against a player who is 4-6 inchers taller and 25-40 pounds heavier, I always come out second best. ;)

He should be in the top 6 but is not good enough. As good as he has looked playing bottom 6, he is not a typical bottom 6 forward. Hope he proves the neigh sayers wrong but I'm not betting on him in the playoffs in that role.

He's spent approx 2 minutes with Matthews.

He spent 33 minutes with Nylander and Tavares, and no, it appears he wasn't good enough for that line, though there was more to it, than just his play.

He's been great in his role on the 4th line though...

Not succeeding with one set of line mates, doesn't mean you can't compete in the playoffs.. that's just a weird conclusion.

Yes, and no matter how loud I shout at my TV they don't stop doing it. :)

Dumolin 6'4", 207 lbs. Malgin 5'9" 177lbs

Maybe it's best to build a team that works, instead of trying to fit into some preconceived notion, or what a top 6, or bottom 6 player should be.

If the size is the issue wouldn't you want him forechecking against scoring lines and offensive D who are mostly 5'10-6'1/190? Aren't most of the big guys on the 4th lines he's being matched up against?

No denying he has looked good on the 4th line. I just don't see him being as effective against a bigger winger in a 7 game series. Guess we will have to wait and see if he keeps it up and is on the 4th line come playoff time.

Murray was solid. Couldn't fault him for either of the goals.

Hopefully he can stay healthy now and get into a rhythm.

He's been a pleasant surprise so far.
As far as Benn is concerned he's been really really good, I was meh about the signing. I could be wrong but I thought he was a healthy scratch waiver wire guy the last couple of years. If that was the case I'm all for the resurgence and support it fully.

The second (or third if you prefer) line of Robertson, Nylander, and Malgin looked really good in their one period together. I'd like to see more of that.

Has anyone really succeeded on a line with Tavares and Nylander? Those two each do well when on the same line, but it seems to be more in spite of each other. All their left wingers seem to be an afterthought.

Malgin looked fine with Nylander and Robertson.

Num Time % Players GF GA +/- SF SA SF% CF CA CF%
1 55:27 37.7 MALGIN- KAMP -ASTON-REESE 3 1 2 34 17 66.7 60 49 55.0

These guys have been dominant, including against teams with "traditional" 4th liners. I'm not sure why anyone would want to mess with this. Sure, we need to give it more time, but their play has been exceptional.

when marner tavares and nylander were together it was a 81%xgf last year ... just saying lol

in reality those 2 dont play well together and it never worked . doesnt matter the LW the underlying numbers are not the best. mik was good at generating offense but the defensive numbers were horrendous, and kerfoot defensive numbers were good but they didnt generate enough offense considering the talent on that line

my conclusion is based on evidence not a "belief" system. He was tried he did not succeed. For the sake of one player do you want his linemates in the top6 to feel the effects? That is not for the benefit of the team. Its a team game you do whats best for the team not for an individual.
