Murray Conference

:handclap:Damn straight EM was and still is the problem ,Alfie did what he as always done for our team and our city, stayed loyal ,and called him out on it.He knows the fans will want answers and is leaving it up to fearless owner to answer them:nod:

That's just so short sighted. Let's say we didn't have an internal budget and were willing to spend to 64Million. Who exactly would be give all the extra money too? We have bunch of young talent that is progressing on schedule. Now isn't the time to dump them and replace them with over price vets. In 2 - 3 years when those young kids are really ready to produce we can add the 1 or 2 pieces we are missing to put us over the top. Until then there is no point in blindly throwing money at some UFA's with our fingers crossed.

But...we could have signed David Clarkson to a 7 year $5.5M contract!!

I know you hate Alfie and couldn't be more delighted at his departure , however it was Alfie who demonstrated never say die effort on the ice . In the series against the Pens it was Alfie who scored the goal with seconds left to put the game into overtime, it was Alfie who never gave up when the going got tough.
.
In the series against the Ducks it was Alfie with some assistance from Fisher who caried the battle while many of the other players wilted under the pressure and lost thier composure including Philips with his own goal.

Actually the question was is it feasible that you can come back-not will you come back..
And Alfie said that it was probably not feasible-but went on to say that maybe thats the way they liked it.

I don't hate Alfie. He's was a great player. What he's not though, is a great leader. Leader's don't say and do stupid things all the time.

They don't admit defeat in a series that is still not over, and they don't bail on their team to try to win a cup through the back door either.

The fact that people are trying so hard to find nothing wrong with his post game 4 comments is truly astonishing.

Wake up.

The greatest break in logic so far in this "Alfie got lowballed" explanation is that someone who was underpaid when he shouldn't have been should be overpaid when he shouldn't be. Two wrongs don't make a right. Alfie is not a $5.5 million per year player even with all the captaincy intangibles, etc. He's just not. And whether he was underpaid previously has no bearing on his worth now. The fact is, this guy got almost all of his cash from his previous deal before the lockout and lost a pittance compared to how much salary guys like Spezza, Karlsson and Michalek lost. If he walked out on the team because he felt he deserved more than his fair share to make up for years past, then what kind of precedent would this team have been setting by agreeing to that kind of compensation? What kind of offer would they have had to make to Clarkson, an in his prime free agent who the team had brought in and courted for a day, if they had put that kind of money on the table to a 41-year-old player who has been in several steady years of decline?

I just can't believe some of the bad logic people are trying to use to justify a guy just wanting to walk away from this team.

Both sides have since lobbed veiled shots at the other, albeit I think Alfie's been a little more classy, in that he has said he was selfish and didn't blame the organization much, whereas the Sens camp seems to be shirking responsibility for their mishandling of the situation.

I'd very much like to know how anyone could consider attempting to negotiate a contract to be "mishandling the situation." If Alfie felt entitled to some sort of extra consideration and threw a fit after the first meeting then that's on him. Stand the **** up and communicate your dissatisfaction instead of going into the "cone of silence".

There's no question that the Sens misread the situation but I'm not at all convinced they mishandled it. They couldn't read Alfie's mind and predict that he'd do something so completely out of character from the rest of his time here.

Meanwhile, a contract needed to be negotiated so they do the same thing they've done thousands of times already: try to negotiate a deal amenable to both sides. Give and take. Standard operating procedure. Yet, with Alfie incommunicado, it's all one-sided, talking to a wall. How do you call that mishandling from the Sens perspective?

I absolutely think he's worth 5.5 million. He plays 20 minutes a night in all situations, including being a demon on the PK. He's good for 25+ goals and 50+ points. And come playoff time he just has that savvy.
