Speculation: MTL exploring acquiring Lafreniere from NYR

Probably can’t do a hockey trade, it would be a sideways move at best for Montreal and a step back at worst.

That being said Lafreniere is being underrated on these boards, people are not taking into the disaster that were the rangers this past season. Also, did we all forget how good he was in the playoffs last year? Dude is a gamer.

Futures is probably all we can offer, if the rangers would even accept that.

Pick #16+Newhook+Struble+Beck. Can’t put Reinbacher on the table because he’s our only glimmer of hope on the right side lol.

Same will be true for Laf. You can’t just say “woof he only had 45 points” without any context. Laf was 2nd on the Rangers in 5v5 production. He got virtually no opportunity on the power play because Lavi never put him on the 1st unit. Panarin, Mika, Fox are too stubborn to change after 60 seconds, so NYR PP2 only get 20 seconds beginning with the puck on Igor’s stick. Play Laf on PP1 and his numbers would pop.
The thing is idk that his situation improves that much in MTL. He’s not cracking the top line so that leaves him on the 2nd line centered by Christian Dvorak. That’s a clear step down from being on the 2nd line with JT Miller.

Laf is by all accounts not a great PP player and has been tried on PP1 and never stuck. IMO he wasn’t superior to any of the players on NYR’s first unit and would find himself having to knock someone off MTL’s PP1 as well

Very different situation than Kaapo going to Seattle.

If the Rangers deal Laf it will be because they're looking to make as much cap room as possible for McDavid next season. Canucks have been rumored to be interested in Laf, and they need a replacement for Boeser so there's a trade to be made there.

Could it be part of a bigger deal? Otherwise I don’t see the point in us sending him home. f*** doing him a favor after he signed that contract and coasted. Nah. Wait and see if he builds his trade value up. If not dump him to another team that need scoring help preferably out west and at the bottom of the standings.

the rangers don't have any interest in moving laf. i have no idea what mtl's looking to do but there's not a return for laf that makes much sense for them to move that the rangers would also have interest in. it's a video game or fantasy league kinda rumor.

Besides…regardless of what anyones thoughts are on the strategy, the rangers f/o is expecting to be a contender, and any moves they make will be driven by them thinking they improve their chances of winning now. They arent looking at all to move laf. This is just mtl media - running with a story they’d love to see play out bringing the local prodigy home on a bargain deal where he’ll meet the expectations they had for him as a prospect - and a cpl ny media ppl voicing personal uncertainties about whether or not they should move him. It’s wishful thinking, not rational or informed.

there's also one other teeny tiny little hiccup to any potential deal btw ny and mtl…that being the whole jeff gorton absolutely fkn hates chris drury…rightfully so quite frankly. You can never say never…but
anyone who has the cognitive bandwith to read a situation objectively and correctly identify the emotionally appealing/attention seeking noise to be ignored knows this isn’t anything remotely probable.

Yeah I was thinking Canucks would be good trade partner for the Rangers for Laf. They have Panarin/Cuylle/Perreault already as top 6 wingers. They could trade Laf for help at D and use the $$$ saved for another winger in FA.

What would Canucks trade for Laf? Willander or DPetey +? Or Hronek?

Who was the Habs last Francophone Jesus?

I feel like Damphousse wasn't really good enough. Does it go all the way back to Lafleur?

They gave it their best shot with that bullshit Drouin trade... not sure this would turn out any better

I like Laf. He would be an improvement on Laine for the 2LW position.

Definitely open to it depending on what's going back to NYR. Laine at the very least....

If LaFreniere was drafted later in the 1st round he wouldn't get the type of trade attention he does.

He does not look like he's anywhere near worth his next contract - he should realistically have about neutral value, but just my opinion.

right now, Mailloux is proving to be nothing but another offensive AHL Dman that may not be able to cut it in the NHL. Time will tell, but theres a reason why he didnt play with the Habs this season, while guys like Struble and Xhekaj did.

Until he learns to be play responsibly in his own end, and hopefully use his body a lot more, to me hes a tradable asset. Guys like Reinbacher and Engstrom are ahead of him right now in the prospect Dman list.
Mailloux missed a lot of time, he's better than you think. Ceiling be a Burns, floor a Souray. Has a great shot, big and mobile.

Lafrenière aside, I am genuinely curious about what NYR will do this offseason. You don t want to rebuild with Panarin Miller Trochek Fox Shesterkin still Elite, Cuylle Schneider Miller Lafreniere entering their prime. I don t think Zib Kreider contracts are enough to tank a franchise either. Where do you see them going this offseason ? Do they keep the 12th pick ? Do they try to trade away Zib Kreider and replace them ?

Just Marinaro wishing for the next Francophone savior. However, I could certainly see Laf dealt to any number of teams. There is a small, but dedicated group of Ranger fans who despise Laf for his enormous inconsistency.

About one to two teams from now, i think he might be a Bruin. He is a decent net front player. ...

Floor a Souray???? His floor is Scott Perunovich. Great offense in AHL, bad defense in NHL.

Again there’s a reason he didn’t play with The Habs this season after a full season in the Laval, and got beat out by Xhekaj and Struble.

Not saying he can’t improve, but don’t tell me his floor is Sheldon Souray who played 750 career NHL games
