Why didn't the Habs just claim him? He makes 25k more against the cap now.
Not sure, maybe they think some other good player might be available on waivers soon? I agree it's a little odd...

He's a 24-year old former D-man of the year in the AHL, which I suppose wouldn't count for much except he did it as a rookie. I think he's worth a shot, there's some good offensive upside there, but he needs to get some NHL games under his belt, preferably in a situation that suits him. But that's not really how it usually works for 7th round picks, for his and Montreal's sake I hope they saw in him that upside and will be going for that, if not I think he'll find his way into AHL soon enough. He might end up there anyway, or he might become a legit 2nd pairing offensive guy who's very good on the PP. I wouldn't be surprised either way.

I'm somewhat surprised that it was Montreal and not Arizona that Niku chose to play for. There's a massive opportunity in the latter location to get some playing time that may not be available anywhere else.

Maybe the AHL salary was very attractive with Montreal?

I am sure they had this deal set up before he asked for a termination. Habs seems like a decent fit for him.

He's a good bet for the Habs... could be a third pair puck moving D that they need. Will compete with Chris Wideman and Mattias Norlinder for the spot.

If he doesn't do it, he's a strong AHL player, we already know that much and takes up no cap space in the AHL, so there is that too. Its a low risk signing.

He never got a real run of games with Winnipeg, 3 years ago he got 30 games, then 17, then 6 NHL games. Seems like everytime he made a mistake they gave up on him, so maybe a change of scenery works, or maybe it doesn't. Either way it's very low risk.

While it’s obviously far from a sure thing, I certainly wouldn’t be shocked to see Niku surprise a few people if he gets some legit minutes in MTL. I think that’s a great pickup by them. Hope they give him a good look.
