His knee's still bad. He has to ice it up after every game. I'd re-sign him this very July. I'm thinking 6x6, he could still score 30 goals in his sleep. That's worth money.

His knee isn't bad and will not be better than what it is now. He even said himself. And no way his play worth close to that contract. Right of the bat, no teams would take the chance in offering him a 6y contract. Maybe next year, if he show us more, but not right know

In a vacuum, sure. However this is Laine's third team with essentially the same complaints about him/his attitude. At this point he pretty much is who he is.

Do you really want that in Anaheim's locker room? Especially right now with a new coach coming in who hopefully will be developing all the younger players a whole lot better than Cronin did. I'd much rather (given an only A or B choice) stick with Strome's lesser production but solid leadership than Laine's (hopefully) better production & basket of problems.

A couple of years from now once everyone has settled into the 'we figured out what it takes to win & now we're going to do it' groove, that's when you can bring in the flyer with the issues & hope that it works out for the best. Right now though, the on & off ice things could spectacularly backfire & Anaheim's not really in a position to risk that. Your 'high risk' isn't just that he won't produce/will get hurt again, but also the future impact on all the younger player that the Ducks have if they decide to emulate him.

(I do agree that Strome with his contract isn't worth a whole lot right now as trade value & not worth giving up for a low pick that has a low percentage chance of actually becoming a NHL regular)

I would take him with Coach Q and Selanne as a possible mentor. To me, it is more about getting out of Strome's bad contract than the return. Laine is a lottery ticket at this point, but its a big payout if he hits.

I can't see him being worth that much. Even if there was a knee issue, his overall lack of vision and hustle is too much of an issue.
It's not just that he's slow in getting places, it's that he's not aware of where he should be, so even when he backchecks, he's a liability.

What do you think Strome (and his $5M contract with 2 more years of term) are worth? Not much. So if you can take a one year flyer on a high risk/high reward option like Laine, then why not? It's better than a low draft pick or whatever else Strome might return.

I doubt Strome returns much, but I'd rather take the lottery ticket over Laine who I just don't want

What happens when we find a real 2C, we scratch $5M for the most important year of the next 10 years(the last year of Demidov's ELC)? Yes that's exactly what would happen...Laine is horrible and really makes it hard to win the cup next year(which should be part of our 2 year window, but probably isn't because of him), but you're even retaining so that strome's cost matches laine's!!!

I'd rather pay someone a 1st to take Laine and then after seeing how good Demidov really is, if he's instantly a star, trade our prospects and other picks for the best value 2 year contracts and spend to the cap. If we do that, we probably win the cup because we would have 2-4 ELCs(Hutson, Demidov and maybe Reinbacher, Fowler).

It's only for two years, and the Laine retention would only be for next year. We shouldn't have any issues to afford that.

Sounds like Laine is the anti-Q player. I dont think Ducks will target him.
