Moving to Chicago next week, looking for advice

I live just north of North ave and Damen in Bucktown. Great spot by 6 corners. Soooo much stuff all around. There is also a bus that takes you right to the UC in 10 minutes. Its officially 2 miles away.

Would highly recommend

Not cheap but this is your best bet if you're looking for a good time.

Just a heads up about pilsen, and a little more info. Its changed/changing a lot over the past few years. Theres a lot of Art stuff going on around 18st and up by halsted thats pretty cool. Theres drinking tours during the summer where you go to a bunch and get plastered while doing so. I would also like to say that there is still quite a few gangbangers that live there. The SD's mostly. And summer time in Chicago is murder season. Just a heads up if you decide to move there. Most likely you'll be fine, but **** happens. University Village would probably be better. And I don't think theres much difference in price.. I'd pass on the northside also. Going to visit up by Depaul etc is always fun, but living there is a pain in the ass. Lots of hot girls though.
Last thing. The only other school I've been to with more ugly or non attractive women is NOTRE DAME. UIC is lacking big time in this area also. If your looking to have a good time with some good looking women prob go elsewhere. lol good luck

lmao thank you

UIC has a rather large Bosnian student population it seems. I would say they are the exception to the female rule there. I'm friends with a bunch of Bosnians and most of the women are beautiful.

^ Im sure there are some beautiful women that go there. Maybe 5
Jk There has to be at least a few hot women there you would think, I just haven't seen them. I had better luck at University of Chicago. That really surprised me
Northwestern wasn't anything special either.. End/Derail

I'm a 22 year old student from Canada that's doing an internship in Chicago (on W Madison St) and just started looking for a place to stay. I'll be there for 4 months.

Thank you for any help!

1) Which neighborhoods/districts (http://wikitravel.org/upload/shared//1/1f/Integrated_Chicago_districts_map.png) do the college kids live in? I'm trying to keep the price of rent down while staying relatively close to my workplace.

2) Which neighbourhoods/districts should I avoid? I'm aware that chicago has good and bad sides of town, and I'd like to keep myself as safe as posisble.

3) Any good chicago-area renting sites that you guys would recommend?

It's a bit of a train ride (half hour) but checkout the sublets in Evanston.... They're not the best apartments but its cheaper and better than living in downtown or what may seem to be affordable to you not to mention many are lake front..

As far as danger.... Chicago is like a maze when it comes to safe and not safe - you'll figure it out.

No offense but this guy is moving here for a short time and Evanston isn't anything special where I would recommend telling someone to move there. The commute alone from Evanston to the west loop everyday would suck.. Plus you can find decent priced places within a few minutes of where he would be working. Just takes some looking..

You can get a sublet with northwestern students for 700 within a few blocks from the lake/train or live on a segregated west side community for 1,400 a moth in an apartment just the same, have a 5 minute commute..

You can PM me if you have any specific questions. In the past 10 years I've lived in South Loop, Bucktown, Lincoln Park, Lakeview East and now Edgewater Beach. I work at 400 South Jefferson, my fiance at 181 W Madison.

You can't afford South Loop. It is NOT cheap.
You can't afford West Loop.
Pilsen is medium safety.
Lincoln Park is expensive, and not an easy commute for you.
Andersonville/Edgewater is affordable but a long commute (I would know), and anything North of that is really not worth the savings (Evanston).

A blue line commute would work great for your work location. Look for a sublet in Ukranian Village or Wicker Park. Bucktown starts to get expensive and Logan Square is hit or miss on safety.

The University Village is a good suggestion. Presidential Towers is a good suggestion in the sense that they will offer short term leases on their own (no sublet needed), but they're expensive.

College kids live everywhere.

Domu has been advertised heavily in Chicago for apartment hunting, but I've never used it. I've used The Apartment People to find my units in South Loop and Lakeview East. They're great because they drive you to a half dozen places in one afternoon and you sign your lease at the end. I used Craigslist for my Bucktown apartment, and that was fine, too.

If you find that you don't like any of the apartments they drive you to, are you charged a fee for not signing a lease?

I too will be looking for a new apartment this summer (I want an apartment with central a/c and heat, as well as a new kitchen). I've been living in Bridgeport for 8 1/3 years, and I would recommend it to anyone. It's very safe, and I still am very close to Hawks games. Public transportation is also pretty easy.

I live in Norwood Park and it's a 20 minute train commute to the loop. Just depends on your preferences really.

Nope, they don't charge you anything. I had a woman drive me two different days because I didn't find anything I liked the first time.

You *do* have to pay an application fee for your credit check. But, their website has a coupon you can use you refund that, if I recall. http://www.apartmentpeople.com/

well where did you end up? You are a Chicagoan we want an update

Sorry, haven't gotten around to this thread for some time!

I had to push back my move date to next week due to personal circumstances, and after a bit of research I decided it is best for me in my current situation to search for a room, rather than my own apartment. If I get a full-time job offer following my internship, I will obviously use all of the advice that has been provided in this thread to search for an apartment, but for now I am sticking to craigslist and padmapper in an attempt to find a place with roommates.

It has been much harder than I anticipated. Not too many listings available, and the majority of them are too restrictive, such as "females only" or "full-year lease required", when all I need is 3 months... hmm.

For any college students here: Where do you guys search for rooms to rent? Am I missing a popular website or something? I haven't come across many ads...
