Post-Game Talk: Mother's Day No Show: Leafs Lose 2-0

It's a bad hit for sure. It's also the Panthers so I don't care. Refs are making it clear that dirty hits are allowed (i.e. Kulikov elbow to Marner's head). If Panthers want to play dirty hockey then I'm fine with the Leafs dishing it back. That's just me though.
I completely agree. The players are just responding to the refs letting the Panthers play dirty/dangerous hockey.

His record says different.

Such a calm, reasoned assessment.
I don’t care what his record says. He’s a one trick pony goon coach. His coaching style (if you can call it that) would never work on a team that can’t get away with murder the way Florida does.

I’m not a paid hockey analyst. Fandom is inherently emotional and we’re allowed to vent. If you’re looking for a calm, reasoned assessment, there are better places to find it than here.

Another playoff LOSS directly tied to the fact Leafs have 4 players in the top 10 highest paid that consume > 1/2 their entire Salary Cap.

With Captain America it feels like such a massive hangover from that 69 goal campaign.

He went from golden boy, highest paid contract in the game, captaincy of the Leafs, his country, to hurt -!: mismanaging his health to trying to do it all with Team USA and damaging his own playoff reputation even more all in a 13 month span.

And wasn't there some selfish play in his quest for 70 that cost them a game?

Yay!!!!!

He is back to complaining about this instead of praising Treliving for continuing to have 4 players with those salaries.

Missed the old you, can't wait to see you flip-flop again.

You're assuming that is the core of the defence when he hits free agency.

Don't have a lot of assets to dump bad contracts...

Also, they were mostly just signed, not sure Tre will be dealing them.

Yeah but maybe try acting like an adult rather than a 12 year old who has been sent to bed early.

As I mentioned before and its true and we have witnessed this for decades now.

The NHL is the only sport that changes its rules in the playoffs. Just watch how defenders interfere with forechecks or how many crosschecks can a player take. This promotes goons , not the stars of the game.

We see it again in these playoffs. Fans proclaim its heart but in reality teams like Florida take advantage of these goon antics. A penalty should be a penalty. Make it all the same all year than. But the NHL refuses.

BTW has there been a slower team than Vegas? I swear their D is so slow that they seem to be skating in quick sand. But then again our D isnt much faster. Just a observation from another game. Built for playoffs I guess where the ice shrinks because of the rules change.

No. They are the killer predators, Leafs are the turtling beta victims.

Forearm smash our #1 goalie into literal oblivion and no team response? Check. Try to decapitate Marner last night with elbow to the head and no team response? Check. Ad infinitum...
Easy to play like that when you know the league has your back. If we played even 10% of the way Florida does, we'd lose half the lineup to suspension.

I'm going to agree; Maurice isn't a good coach. People seem to forget he was OUR head coach for a couple of years... And we missed the playoffs every year while watching him attempting to relive his one surprise Cup run with Bates Battaglia...

HIs playoff record would be terrible if it weren't for the two Cup runs with Florida. As it is, he's 500 in the playoffs.

Quick Hits:

1) That was the worst game I think we've played so far, worse than Game 5 against Ottawa where we were far better than the score line suggested. Last night we were worse than the score line suggests.

2) I don't understand the sentiment that this Florida team isn't good and/or is too tired to keep up. It's really strange. This Florida team is really damn good and they are tough. They added Marchand, Sturm, and Jones at the deadline and they were already an impressive team. We're seeing what we should expect to see, an incredibly good hockey team that is also tough as nails.

3) Honestly... last night scared me because we looked a lot more like previous versions of this team and less like everything we've seen so far this year.

4) And... four straight penalties to start is tough. A couple pretty meh ones, but even if we pretend they were all full value, you can't tell me there wasn't an infraction on Florida during that time, there certainly was. We still have to be more disciplined regardless.

5) It's 2-2 still and we've been good most of the series. And really, we somehow were in this game almost to the end (thank you, Joe Woll), and we were pretty terrible until almost the end of it.

6) The bounce back is key. Are we going to see more of what we saw in the first three games or more of this? We'll know pretty early into Game 5, I'd think.

7) I'd have taken 2-2 in this series at this point if you told me that before the series. The playoffs are super difficult and this is one of the best battle tested teams in the entire league, it's time to breathe and come back with a vengeance in Game 5, not lament about woe is us. Ignore the noise, always forward.

Bonus) Domi should be suspended, that was as dirty as it gets. He won't be, but damn. The elbow to Marner was pretty awful too, that is the kind of stuff the NHL needs to crack down on yet seemingly just keep chalking up to playoff hockey.

Those those things aren’t mutually exclusive.

Having our current cap structure can be a hindrance at the same time that our GM is doing a god job building around the core.

I don’t think anyone could possibly argue that having too much cap space tied up in a limited area of the team is detrimental. It doesn’t make it impossible to build a winner, but it definitely makes it more difficult.

Oh I have and it’s pathetic
As has been mentioned he wasn’t coming here, but just make that Laughton trade look that much more pathetic. I guess he can be a 3rd/4th line plug for a couple of years, but the cost was too steep imo……..

There are plenty of infractions committed by both teams in this series, take off your homer glasses, and imo I don’t mind letting things go in the post season as long as it’s equally ignored………..

Well, spending half (or more) of their cap on 4 forwards hasn’t worked yet, and imo never will, but it sure seels a lot of jerseys……..

Homer?

I never said the leafs got screwed

But name me a sport that changes rules in playoffs ? So rules get lax in playoffs and teams take advantage and it’s all good I guess eh?

Just be consistent all year. Other sports do it but NHL promotes goons
