FIFYI don't think a coach has a lot of cards to play when Auston Matthews turns into David Kampf and Marner into Alex Kerfoot.

Even if it is 3-1 for the Leafs. The fact that Panthers just finished the game where they just completely dominated is a worrying sign bc this game is a typical Panthers playoffs game.Well it should have been 3-1 ... Which would still be doom and gloom lol but not scoring on the PP is killing us again... 2/14? I think.... Def more stressful it being 2-2 now. But home ice seems important so far and we have that.. so GLG.
I thought he had wrist surgery after the Montreal series? Don't disagree otherwise though, incredibly sad watching this loser fail over and over.Matthews doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.
He looked like this in the Montreal series collapse. Wasn't injured. No showed in the Columbus series. Wasn't injured. Was a ghost in Game 7 vs Tampa when we lost. Wasn't injured. Flat out no showed the first Florida series. Wasn't injured.
He was injured in the Boston series and had no issue bailing on the team down 3-1. No explanation ever given.
So now that he's playing like his somewhat awful playoff self and hurt? Sorry, no sympathy.
Matthews said his injury this year is something that can be managed.
Im assuming his injury last year was not manageable.
We will know at the end of the year.
That said, he and Marner didnt create much all year together and Berube didnt try anything diff. I didnt like Keefe, but at least he would split them up when they got cold.
I don't think we think they team should rely on him more, but the way the cap is structured the reality is that they do have to rely on him as being the top paid player, number 1 centre, top goal scorer (generally speaking) and faceoff dominator. Oh, add in top PK and PPer to that list.Matthews always looks like this in the playoffs. And the fans think the team should rely on him MORE...
2/15 on the PP against Florida this series I believe. Every series that the Leafs have struggled, in large part its because of their inability to score on their PP chances. Panthers in this game had better scoring chances killing off penalties than the Leafs looked on the PP.Well it should have been 3-1 ... Which would still be doom and gloom lol but not scoring on the PP is killing us again... 2/14? I think.... Def more stressful it being 2-2 now. Vegas is pretty close…….
This. The core is 0 fer in these games for a reason and tgey never dictate the outcome. The whole team brings it. We got our core 4 playing the most minutes and they are not it.

He just doesn't get into anything in the media. He has stated as much... there was an interview near seasons end I think where Masters asked him about his calm nature with the media. He said he has lots to say, but doesn't feel like calling his players out in the media is the right way to approach things.Probably - yeah.
And that's why they should try separating them for the next few games. And if the problem actually IS Matthews (still doesn't show up), then f***ing TRADE HIM.I don't think we think they team should rely on him more, but the way the cap is structured the reality is that they do have to rely on him as being the top paid player, number 1 centre, top goal scorer (generally speaking) and faceoff dominator. Oh, add in top PK and PPer to that list.
And if he cannot excel at all of it, this team is toast. Sad reality of the Leafs situation.
Florida plays with heart, the Leafs, not so much……..The whole team brings it. We got our core 4 playing the most minutes and they are not it.
Well…This is more than a hockey series.
This is a national series.
It's Canada vs USA.
Get this message to the players.
Yes yes, I am all for splitting them up! Agreed. And that's why they should try separating them for the next few games. And if the problem actually IS Matthews (still doesn't show up), then f***ing TRADE HIM.
But instead, it looks like they're going to let Marner and Tavares walk and hope to God Matthews managed to go back to normal. Very good chance it ends this era of Leafs hockey altogether.
Leafs are now 3 - 6 against the Panthers in the playoffs the past few seasons combined.
Now they have to get to 5 wins before the other number hits 8.
Seems like were battling uphill against a better team.
I hear you. But this has been Matthews all year. He's not going to change now. I can't believe there's not more outrage among the media and fan base that there's not an explanation. I get that they aren't going to say just what his injury is so other teams don't exploit it. But he has been a shell of his former self all season. He needed to take time off and get better but didn't. He needed to not play the four nations, he did. The fan base needs an explanation as to A) why the drop off in goal production all season. B) why did he seem like a ghost so often this season. C) why is he so ineffective in the playoffs, healthy or not?
