Post-Game Talk: Mother's Day No Show: Leafs Lose 2-0

Top 6 doesn't score, the team gets 0 goals.

Woll with a good game.

Bottom 6 is now up to 11 points in 10 games, 2 goals.

Everyone sucked today besides Woll though.

Well it should have been 3-1 ... Which would still be doom and gloom lol but not scoring on the PP is killing us again... 2/14? I think.... Def more stressful it being 2-2 now. But home ice seems important so far and we have that.. so GLG.
Even if it is 3-1 for the Leafs. The fact that Panthers just finished the game where they just completely dominated is a worrying sign bc this game is a typical Panthers playoffs game.

Matthews doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.

He looked like this in the Montreal series collapse. Wasn't injured. No showed in the Columbus series. Wasn't injured. Was a ghost in Game 7 vs Tampa when we lost. Wasn't injured. Flat out no showed the first Florida series. Wasn't injured.

He was injured in the Boston series and had no issue bailing on the team down 3-1. No explanation ever given.

So now that he's playing like his somewhat awful playoff self and hurt? Sorry, no sympathy.
I thought he had wrist surgery after the Montreal series? Don't disagree otherwise though, incredibly sad watching this loser fail over and over.

Leafs are now 3 - 6 against the Panthers in the playoffs the past few seasons combined.

Now they have to get to 5 wins before the other number hits 8.

Seems like were battling uphill against a better team.

Has to be the team culture. This whole we are still ok, we are still good, we did nothing wrong we just need to play our game crap. They're sipping their own Kool aid.

Matthews said his injury this year is something that can be managed.

Im assuming his injury last year was not manageable.

We will know at the end of the year.

That said, he and Marner didnt create much all year together and Berube didnt try anything diff. I didnt like Keefe, but at least he would split them up when they got cold.

Then he shouldn't have played 4Nations
He looks exhausted and super slow

Marner lack of effort to get the puck when we had the PP, only to take a penalty in the same sequence
That is some pure sigma s***

Matthews always looks like this in the playoffs. And the fans think the team should rely on him MORE...
I don't think we think they team should rely on him more, but the way the cap is structured the reality is that they do have to rely on him as being the top paid player, number 1 centre, top goal scorer (generally speaking) and faceoff dominator. Oh, add in top PK and PPer to that list.

And if he cannot excel at all of it, this team is toast. Sad reality of the Leafs situation.

2/15 on the PP against Florida this series I believe. Every series that the Leafs have struggled, in large part its because of their inability to score on their PP chances. Panthers in this game had better scoring chances killing off penalties than the Leafs looked on the PP.

Only positive is that Woll looked good this game and if he can keep it going at least it will give the Leafs a chance to win in the next 2-3 games. As for scoring only Knies and sometimes Nylander and Tavares have looked relatively consistently dangerous on offense. Everyone else haven't really given Florida much of a scare offensively. Lack of scoring has creeped back onto this team. Lets see if they can make adjustments and put the puck in the net in game 5.

The whole team brings it. We got our core 4 playing the most minutes and they are not it.
This. The core is 0 fer in these games for a reason and tgey never dictate the outcome.

This is why I say they’re playing with house money because they’ve already exceeded expectations.

Remember how Gary Roberts went through all those shoulder surgeries after the 2002 playoffs because he was completely hurt and mangled but yet was powering the team through the ECF? Not everyone can do that, but come playoffs time everyone is dealing with something. And if you’re playing, you’re open to discussions about your effectiveness.

Probably - yeah.
He just doesn't get into anything in the media. He has stated as much... there was an interview near seasons end I think where Masters asked him about his calm nature with the media. He said he has lots to say, but doesn't feel like calling his players out in the media is the right way to approach things.

Said players would be getting an earful tomorrow!

And that's why they should try separating them for the next few games. And if the problem actually IS Matthews (still doesn't show up), then f***ing TRADE HIM.

But instead, it looks like they're going to let Marner and Tavares walk and hope to God Matthews manages to go back to normal. Very good chance it ends this era of Leafs hockey altogether.

This is more than a hockey series.

This is a national series.

It's Canada vs USA.

Get this message to the players.
Well…

If you watched the fiasco 4 Nations, surely you caught our captain in an interview deferring to the (physical) leadership of JT Miller and Tkachuk?

So by example and by mouth, your Toronto Maple Leafs captain, Auston Matthews IS playing like it’s a national series, and is all to happy deferring to the leadership he follows.

He’s shown us for a while…He’s scared. He’s not going to go through the fire for us. Ever.

If we make it through, it will be because the team does so carrying him.

Yes yes, I am all for splitting them up! Agreed.

I have always felt the norm should be them apart, and then you go to them in certain situaions where it makes sense. They will get PP time together anyway.

Marner might walk. Tavares will be back 100%.

Leafs hurt themselves in Game 3. Or should say Woll took a sledge hammer to the teams mojo and evidently there was no leadership in place to stem the collapse tonight.

Shutout in 4 periods of play now. Leafs are in trouble and wouldn’t be surprised if they lost the next 2, slow strangulation.

I hear you. But this has been Matthews all year. He's not going to change now. I can't believe there's not more outrage among the media and fan base that there's not an explanation. I get that they aren't going to say just what his injury is so other teams don't exploit it. But he has been a shell of his former self all season. He needed to take time off and get better but didn't. He needed to not play the four nations, he did. The fan base needs an explanation as to A) why the drop off in goal production all season. B) why did he seem like a ghost so often this season. C) why is he so ineffective in the playoffs, healthy or not?

easy. because if people rip him a new one, people will go "Omg look at Leaf fans finally get a superstar and they treat him like this bleh bleh bleh.

I will say it again. if he's injured, sit down. this belief that you need to play completely busted is so stupid and quite frankly it hurts more than it helps. because in MY point of view, if you wear the jersey, you are healthy, and you deserve to be called out for playing like poo.

losing this game doesn't bother me, it's losing the last one. it really was a shame that Woll wasn't how he was this game, last game. (I mean technically we should have been how we were last game this game but whatever)

It's a 2-2 series, and we have home ice. Everyone relax all will be fine, it happens.

We win 2 in a row "Plan the parade"

We lose 2 in a row "Trade everyone"

We'll be fine, we had multiple breakaways again and Tavares and Knies both missed tap ins from the crease. Same thing in game 3.

If they bury just one of those chances, we're having a totally different discussion right now.

Florida isn't that good of a team, I mean obviously they're the defending champ but they're really not impressive at all. They spent half the 1st period on the powerplay (2 shady calls) and generated almost nothing 5 on 5, lots of garbage shots from distance.
