Most overhyped prospects in recent memory?

Tuch / Mysak was super overrated at some point.

Luke Tuch's expected to be at best a 3rd liner and I've never heard anyone seriously hype up Jan Mysak. Like ever.

Ryan Poehling

C'mon despite his crazy 1st game heroics everyone was just hoping he'd turn out into an elite 3rd line Centre.

I remember a time when Jesperi Kotkaniemi was supposed to be a hall of famer.

Laying it on pretty thick there amigo. Though the kid was overhyped by most Habs fans since we were all penciling him in eventually as a 1st line Centre.

I was being hyperbolic but the hype was nuts. They basically thought he was going to be what Nick Suzuki actually is

Maybe not most but still pretty hyped was the Wings whole 2011-2013 D class of Sproul (OHL Most Outstanding Dman), Oulette (Q Captain, and 1st teamer multiple times), Jensen (WCHA's Defensive Player of the Year and selected to the NCAA West First All-American Team) and Marchenko, Backman (both highly regarded Euro players at that age and I think Marchenko was even the WJC cap for Russia.)

The hype was we had one of if not the best prospect dman in the OHL, QMJHL, WCHA, KHL, and SEL and we ended up with 1 NHLer who took years to become more than a bottom pair guy. Wings fans legitimately thought we had our top 4 locked up for years, and then it was massive busting all the way around.

I remember Detroit had some bad drafts (Brian Burke tier bad drafts) due to Holland being way past his prime, shocking Holland still works in the NHL given how much the game has past him by. Since he works now for our biggest rival(LA) I'm happy with him working the NHL still lol.
Amazing how much things improved in their drafting when Yzerman got there and they selected Seider in 19, Raymond in 20, and Edvinsson in 21.

Nikishin was considered the best player outside of the NHL last year and he looks completely lost in his NHL debut. 4 games, 3 SOG, -6. Not very impressive.

May I remind you Michkov was drafted 7th, and arguably had a more impressive season than every player taken ahead of him.

The overhyped award goes to stiffs like Yakupov and Filatov.
This is for recent overhyped players, Filatov is 35 years old and Yakupov was drafted more than a decade ago.

I was recently wondering what that big forward Detroit played at the beginning of last year that got a ton of hype was up to, only to see Elmer Soderblom was having a middling season in the AHL after playing 20 games in the NHL last season while garnering a ton of media attention in the process.

It made me wonder, what other prospects have gotten unjust media attention, or hype in recent years. Guys that maybe wern’t busts but didn’t live up to how people talked about them before they made the show.

Another recent guy that I think fits this bill is Arber Xhekaj, he got a ton of media attention when he made the show as an undrafted rookie out of juniors, but he has done nothing but be a staple to the Canadiens third pair while being a defensive liability.

would love to hear your input on this Topic!
Owen Power and I'm guilty! Thought Power was going to be a Pronger/Hedman talent by now and so did many others. Overhyped "bust" is Zegras. He was excellent for most of the year even when not producing on the scoresheet.

Guess who also had 1 point and was -5 in his first 4 games? Connor McDavid. And he wasn't tethered to pylon Dimitri Orlov.

It's unfortunate this thread wasn't around back then. You could've included McDavid in the most overhyped conversation after only 4 games!

McDavid was 18 years old, it was his first pro season. Nikishin is 23 now with fours years of experience in a professional league if you can still call it that because the KHL is a joke now. 18 years old McDavid would break records if he played in the KHL.

I agree that the sample size is too small but I watched Nikishin a lot this year when he was playing in the KHL. He has good numbers but he doesn't impress me. He's missing something.

Seems a little early to make any conclusions. Getting dropped into a playoff series against the defending champs is a pretty tall order. Off the rink I'm sure there's been an adjustment just in terms of getting acclimated. On the rink we hear stories from guys who get traded at the deadline that there's an adjustment period with new teammates/system and the transition isn't exactly smooth most of the time. Due to injuries I think Nikishin was playing a bit on the right side so that just adds to the degree of difficulty.

That's another thing. Maybe he's scared to be injured again so that's why he let Tkachuk run in circles around him.

To be fair to Power dmen his size often take extra time to develop at the NHL level. Hedman didn't hit 50 pts until his 5th season and Pronger took 7 seasons and 9 for Chara. I think the success of smaller offensive dman early on like Makar/Fox/Hughes has given people some unrealistic develop guidlines for dmen. Dominant big guys take some time to get there.
