Most overhyped prospects in recent memory?

The media tried to destroy him for two years

McKenzie’s rhetoric is far from positive.

No other prospect from that 2023 class was scrutinized as much as Michkov.

Lo and behold, Ryan Kennedy of THN kickstarted rumors in January 2023 that Michkov — the consensus preseason No. 2 — had character issues. This started a months-long character assassination by the media and several draft pundits.

Of course they did. Kennedy started the “character concerns” narrative. The top hockey podcast in the world took it to an even deeper level.
This whole narrative looks absolutely hilarious in light of recent developments.

Car crashes, DUIs, and escorts less than a month into his first offseason after getting NHL money 🤣🤣

Mtl fan is dying on the hill of "not so good Michkov" who had better season than most of players who was drafted before him.

It will never ends.

Anyway. Its Lane Hutson who was overhyped. But he is good to live up his expectations. Great story even with some bad tellers. Bedard had a lot of hype and now he is having too many antihype. Its too early to make conclusions. Zegras of course, was a face of video game, I hope he will find his way to himself. Laf n Kakko had a lot of hype but I hope it's a problem of forwards development system in rangers, they just can't to do it right. So may be they will be better with the time, both are quite young still. Wright story wasn't right and still far from the final picture. There were many local stories like Ty Smith for Devils or Albert Johansson for Detroit but they were more local things.

As a Habs fan, I really wish we had drafted Michkov instead Reinbacher, ugh, I love Michkov's potential. But I do think that if we were given the choice to have Hutson or Michkov tomorrow, I'm taking Hutson. This is not to diminish Michkov's impact, but Hutson is more valuable to the Habs than a dynamic winger.

I do believe mtl fans should not pick between them. It was the choice not about Hutson or Michkov, it was about other D. And I do believe Michkov have higher pick(my prediction before the season was 60-65 points for him). Its not that hard to believe when player has better season than most players who was drafted before him and has one of the best rookie seasons in the modern NHL. And I think mtl did well in the end with making homework and draft Demidov, they will be great. Could be greater but fans could do nothing with it. I still not counting all mtl fans as Michkov haters, its only about loud angry part and I dont know why they are so loud angry because they have Hutson. they have Demidov. And all other players team will build around and already face their first play off. Why some fan still decided to make bad wrong conclusion about Michkov when the player played really good and the team he root for is playing really good?

I dunno. Unless you were expecting Hutson to grow a foot or win the Norris, he's probably not overhyped if he's won the Calder, brought his team to the playoffs, and broken records in his first season. Given how unexpected his performance was, I think there's an argument that he was underhyped.

I'm not going to name names, but if a prospect is being touted as "generational" but doesn't manage to perform anywhere near that label, I'd probably consider this a case of overhype.

Lol. Pulled directly from your ass.
Dude, how many times do I have to say I don’t care if you believe me or not? In fact I’m sure no one cares whether you do or don’t.

The people that are old enough that were here will likely remember it as well. Probably why my posts are being liked while yours are being laughed at by some other members

This is the saddest, most desperate flex I’ve ever seen posted on here 🤣

And nobody said that shit lol. The only reason why anyone is liking your posts here is because there are tons of Habs haters.

You can post anything negative about the Habs, their players, or their fans and it will get likes, no matter how crazy it is. Case in point.

I wrote that he eventually met expectations. And there was a lot of hype. Even a meme was born out of this among the fans of many clubs. At the same time, many hockey players were, let's say, "expected" and got into the top three finalists, spent the season at the same level or won the prize for the best newcomer. But their figures did not turn into a meme among fans of other teams. Seider was underhyped. Hutson wasnt.

For now mostly all "potentially generational" prospects are performing on their expected level. May be people waited a litlle bit more from Bedard but he is one man on the field. Michkov didnt have a lot of help too, at least his on ice numbers are good for his team. Overall both Michkov and Bedard are showing what there were expected from them in eyes of fans who thought about them in a positive way. I dont remember tonns of messages from Bedards and Michkovs fans that they are waiting 90+ seasons right from the start. McKinnon took time to play on special level and he is bigger and better skater. Kucherov took time to play on exceptional level.

I have a couple names that were significantly overhyped back in the days.

Alexander Frolov, Stanislav Chistov, Igor Grigorenko, Joni Pitkanen, Tuomo Ruutu, Kari Lehtonen, Alexander Svitov and Alexander Perezhogin.
If you heard the description most of them were described as surefire superstar. Especially after that WJC tournament. The hyperbole were flying.

Grigorenko would have been that next guy after Datsyuk and Zetterberg in Detroit if not for a terrible car accident in 2003 that left him in bad shape. Luckily recovered to the point where he could restart his career and be solid in the Super League/KHL, but he was never the same as before when he tore up the 2003 World Junior.

Not saying Grigorenko would have been as good as Datsyuk or Zetterberg, that's pretty unlikely, but he definitely could have been a more consistent, better version of Jiri Hudler if the crash never happened.

I am well aware but I still believe even prior to this injury he was overhyped. A fun player to watch but he was talked about like the next surefire superstar (just like all the players I listed).
I do believe back in these days, Detroit prospects as a whole were always highly regarded because of their past success and incredible draft record.
