Toffoli so far.

Matthews has 2 other guy paid 10M+ to feed him open net easy goals. Even Nylander would be our highest paid foward and by a whooping 1.4+M. Toffoli is ahead of Matthews if he's playing with Marner.

Toffoli has more ES+SHG goals which are harder to come by than PPG, especially when you play on a PP with a better player than you and three other elite players.

Matthews. I've argued raw production in the past and I'm not going to deviate to account for ES or per 60 or any other factor other than who has been the most potent at scoring goals.

Most impressive is Noel Acciari. Who the hell thought he can score a hat-trick again?

Toffoli has really impressed. I can’t believe the Canucks didn’t want to extend him. Wtf!

should we be impressed by Matthews tho ? tbh I'm more impressed by the fact he has only missed 3 games this season.

Toffoli is the **** tho, what a beast !!!

Would be great if the question implied in the title was the same as the question implied in the poll, because the most impressive goalscorer can be different from the best goalscorer.

Toffoli has been a more impressive goalscorer to me so far this year, because it's unexpected (thanks to that sh% that is twice his career average). I was expecting something of the sort for Matthews, so I'm not impressed.

Your OP and poll questions ask two different questions.

Best - Auston Matthews. Simply put, he's been the best and has produced more than Toffoli. No reason not to pick him.

Most impressive (especially if you consider impressive in regards to expectation) - that's where it's Toffoli. He's doing way higher than expected, and it's more impressive than others.

Joe Pavelski leads the NHL with 10 powerplay goals (12 goals total)

No love for him producing on one of the worst offenses in the league (and one that doesn't have any true playmakers)? :sarcasm:

There is an "other" option, but I was going with the premise that PP goals are easier to come by than ES/SHG sooooo

So, since Toffoli is presently winning the poll does most impressive actually just mean unsustainable? Toffoli is shooting 20% right now. He's a career 10.8% shooter who's previous best year was 31g @ 14.55% back in 15-16. He's been an absolute gem for the Habs, no doubt about it, but please don't act surprised if he doesn't keep this party going.

Auston Matthews is a career 15.9% shooter. He is shooting 18.6% this year.

This is actually going to be the tyler toffoli jinx thread and he's going to crash back to reality in the 2nd half of the season.

He doesn't even need to crash back to reality. He scored 8 goals in 5 games against Vancouver in those games that got the Habs's blood pumping. 7g in his other 18 games is normal good stuff, and if he puts another 10-12g on the board in his remaining 43gp that's 27g in 56 games which is a very impressive season.

So both are shooting over career averages, great.

If we discount Toffolis Vancouver goals can we discount Matthews 6 goals in 5 games (Four on the PP) vs Ottawa?

This is why I chose Matthews. I figured "most impressive" and "best" were basically the same. I didn't respond based on "most impressive" meaning "most surprising" or "most unlikely".

Yeah sure. Toffoli is shooting double his average and 33% over his previous best full season, Matthews is shooting ~15% over his career average and ~3% above his previous best full season.

I didn't discount anything. Those goals count and you quoted my post that calls this "a very impressive season" for Toffoli. I predicted 27g in 56 games, which paces out to a 40g season and miles more than his previous best. What more do you want? A career 25g scorer to hit 50?
