Which prospect received the most hype/buzz around the NHL world. (After that we will place Slaf, Bedard and Celebrini)

Don't be biased with the player's career. And I'm talking at the draft, not at 16 years old.

I will do it 18 times to have a top 18.

So far:

1- Sidney Crosby (136/235 - 57.9%)
2- Connor McDavid (116/138 - 84.1%)
3- Alexander Ovechkin (99/204 - 48.5%)
4- John Tavares (94/155 - 60.6%)
5- Auston Matthews (47/140 - 33.6%)
6- Rasmus Dahlin (44/104 - 42.3%)

Surprised to see Tavares at 4, he had massive hype as a 15 and 16 year old, but that really died down. Tavares missed the cutoff for the draft by about a week, scouts were asked, had Tavares been eligible, who do you take first, Stamkos or Tavares, it was either 3/10 or 4/10 said Stamkos. He also wasn't the consensus in his draft year with Hedman.

I thought Bedard was really hyped, no?

Yes, he should be at worst behind Ovechkin in terms of hype in their draft year. It's a coin flip between the two.

I started that in 2022, so Bedard wasn't drafted. At the end, I will make a poll to see where Slaf, Bedard and Celebrini goes.

For me it's gonna end:
1- Sidney Crosby (136/235 - 57.9%)
2- Connor McDavid (116/138 - 84.1%)
3- Alexander Ovechkin (99/204 - 48.5%)
4- BÉDARD
5- MCKENNA (But I think McKenna is better than Bédard)
6- John Tavares (94/155 - 60.6%)
7- Auston Matthews (47/140 - 33.6%)
8- Rasmus Dahlin (44/104 - 42.3%)
9- CELEBRINI

Assuming Mack and Hischier will be the lowest considering a lot of people still wondered day of if Jones or Patrick would go first
Mack had a lot of hype around him, yess some people were talking about other players but not because Mack was bad, just because the others were good. It's the same thing about Tavares and Hedman/Duchene.

Celebrini was so underhyped due the draft the year prior with Bedard, michkov, fantilli and Carlsson who soaked up most of spotlight of the 24 draft year also the combo of having demigod and levshunov biting his heels in terms of hype

Yeah sure you're right. Imagine Crosby making that after Ovechkin and Malkin.

This list is crazy. McDavid 1. Bédard 2. Crosby 3. Hard to distinguish any of the three as they were all incredibly hyped.

Then Lafrenière and Tavares.

I think some of you guys have some kind of cognitive illusion and just forgot how hyped was Lafreniere

Yak was hailed as the next coming of Christ of Russian players.

From what I recall Yak was a consensus #1 but being a RW and undersized, I don’t think he was viewed as a phenom, just the clear #1 in a very weak draft. I feel like Murray even got a little push to be a potential surprise #1. It was a bad draft and Kane had already done the “undersized RW” prospect thing to a higher degree plus I think the OHL heads had Hall as a superior prospect just a year or two prior.

I’d put Yak very low on this list. That class sucked and IIRC, the draft heads at the time knew it.

I would say the same except with Stammer. I’m think Laf had been hyped longer such was the state of internet discourse by the time of his draft versus Stamkos a decade prior. But I think on draft day, Stamkos was just considered an absolute HoF type animal with a scoring instinct that was going to be transcendent from day 1. Laf had been in the limelight so long that I think by draft day there were already murmurs of “great prospect but not sure about his explosiveness at the NHL level”.

I was invested as an Avs fan at the time…Tavares was definitely hyped IMO he was more hyped the year before his draft (which is fairly common). I think by draft day, not only Hedman but Duchene was in play at #1. I don’t think it was ever going to happen but there was definitely an undercurrent of “is Duchene going to be the more explosive NHLer than JT?” That was a really high end top of draft year with those three and OEL and Kane, Schenn and Kadri. Elite draft in terms of hyped depth which mostly panned out.
